TS: Moyles vs Cox

I can't stand Chris Moyles. I can't imagine anything worse than him doing the breakfast show. I'm not mad keen on Sara Cox, mainly cos of all the rub pop-trance she plays. But I kno who's side I'm on here, and it's Coxy's. Why are the heads of R1 so bone-headed (see also: continued employment of Dave Pearsh, hiring of something called 'Zane Lowe' - clearly inspired by Chris Morris' Day Today MTV skit)?

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Cox any day, she's funny and picks good tunes for tune of the week. Did Moyles do an afternoon show? Anyone else I've heard in the daytime was a twat. I really hate the way radio stations fill the morning shows with wacky shit, at that time of day I just want music.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Moyles was on for 'Drivetime' I think, not that I drive. Mid-late afternnon anyway. Cox is swapping with him. The prob with all radio stations is the lack of music, too much chatting with producers/newsreaders/sportz commentators/tea boys. Was a risky strategy even for Chris Evans, who, hate him or hate him a lot, knew what he was doing.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Lack of music can be an advantage - danny baker in the morning is fab! and no music for music's sake, just for comedy and fitting purposes. It's all about the entertainment.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Wots Danny Baker on? Station, I mean. Obv. I want good music, but during the boring bits on Today (I am prematurely middle-aged) I just want music; mainly so I have some way of understanding ILM discussions, cos it's more or less the only way I get to hear pop without buying it.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Moyles, just. i don't think he is as bad as many people say but yeh he is too cliquey - only sometimes funny. i think he'll do a better breakfast show than Cox but then Cox probably played better tunes (tho Moyles didn't always stick to A-list on his show).

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately he's on london radio, but you can listen on the net. It's also on early - 6am - 9am I think.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really care. If I want music in the morning I put a CD on. Otherwise I'll listen to Radio 4's Today programme. I stopped listening to Radio 1 in the mornings when Chris Evans took over from Mark & Lard.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

when Chris Evans took over from Mark & Lard.

You mean you're travelling *back in time*? Soon it'll be Steve Wright, Simon Mayo...

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

while we're talking Radio 1, here's a scary picture:

http://www.radiorewind.co.uk/images/mike_read_rockolas.jpg

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

*shudder*

smee (smee), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

They're both shit. Does anyone really think either Moyles or Cox has any input on what music gets played during their show? Moyles has said he just isn't very interested in music. Cox I hold personally responsible for that fuck-mongering Elton John single, so if she does have any influence it's pernicious and evil.

alext (alext), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i think daytime DJs should be given far more control and individual choice about what they can play

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

that said, a lot of them just don't seem to have sufficient imagination or interest anyway.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Mark & Lard are brilliant, for the record. Sara Cox used to piss me off, but I find her quite funny now. I laugh at Chris Moyles, but I fear he may be too much in the mornings. He can wind me up quite easily which you don't really need of a morning. Oh he has got some appalling music tastes. Some of it I agree with, but some of it...jeez!
Of course they don't have any influence hence their little 'tedious link' & so forth where they crowbar in their choice of music. Even their choices of record of the week they are prolly given a list to choose from. still what do i know?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Bring back Simon Mayo! He was the GOD of Radio 1/

alext (alext), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I heard him play Can once at 11am - you don't get that Wiley.

They get tochoose about 2 songs an hour I believe (obv. not 'Sister Ray', but after all the training they've more or less internalized the rules about playing 18-minute-long noise-outs).

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

this is like asking me whether I'd prefer to be castrated with a blunt pencil or a rusty nail

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i though cox was teh funney, and i like pop trance, like she'd say "here's en-trance" and my heart would do a little flip. the only bad thing she ever did for me was hyper-playlist that horrible baltanger thing - "i've got so much love to give to you" ugh. moyles is vile and w/o redeeming qualities. it's a no-brainer.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It could have been a lot worse, though...

http://www.vivienneclore.com/articles/images/colinmurray.jpg

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god yes, i remember what I wanted to post earlier now. I don't really mind colin murray *ducks* but Edith Bowman?!!! God she drives me mad!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Panther OTM. Murray's qt funny. I like N-Trance too, I'm specifically thinking of that 'You're a Superstar' track. Cox still plays it after like a year.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Cox picks record of the week Alex, or at least has some say in it. It was often a house record and I'd try and listen to it. Also whether she picks it or not she still seemed to play good stuff and did sound believably like she was enjoying it.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
Lordy. Just what I don't need on this of all days -- Moyles' new show. I lived and suffered through 1996, and really don't see why I should again. His third tune was the Fucking Lightning Seeds!

So I'm going with my local radio now ('Oxford's sexiest dance and r'n'b'). At 7.05am today they played 'Waterfalls' followed by 'Milkshake' -- that's what I'm talking about.

As for Moyles -- has the nation seen a graver threat sicne May 1940?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 5 January 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i really don't think I can handle him on the radio first thing, but then I used to say that about sara cox, but now I quite like her.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 5 January 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

His extended introductory jingle made me want to burn my radio. I feel this way most mornings though.

robster (robster), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too, I miss Coxy now. I'll have to go on the dole to hear her. It is the worst Monday EVAH already.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I am actually looking forward to listening to her this afternoon! (I'll report back Enrique!)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

By comparison to Moyles' show:

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God! Back in the day, 'shoeless' Wiley, essential work avoidance tactic in my A-Level daze. What was on that? I'm reckoning Gomez, Company Flow...

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

See Whiley yet again hiding her withered hand.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

That's actually quite good, no? In a 1998 sort of way (that's all me). I can think of worse (says man who was made to watch a Coldplay DVD, or a bit of it, over New Year).

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd listen to it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've not listened to it for ages and ages, but I definitely liked it all when I bought it.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm guessing May 1999 for its release date. Am I right?

20. Right here right now - Fatboy Slim

Single in like April 1999, and quite obviously not a patch on 'Rockerfeller' or 'Everybody Needs A...' or 'I See You Baby' or 'Renegade Master'...

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 5 January 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to liek Moyles in the afternoon (ducks) but I can't handle him in the mornings. I too go for the Today program when humphreys is on, otherwise my CD player is U&K. Fox FM can fuck off.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 5 January 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i quite enjoyed him in the afternoons even though he has shite music taste.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 5 January 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a weird move by Radio 1, because they've both lost a million listeners between them in the past year. It seems like a panic tactic. I thought they wanted Dermot Leary as a breakfast anchor?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 5 January 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

They need to let it go, we just aren't in the kind of world where 10m listeners all want the same thing. This morning was really weird, the whole 'heritage' thing, the whole 'saviour' thing. It's only half-ironic, isn't it? He really does thing he can get the whole nation together to listen to... Robbie Williams.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 5 January 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That whole saviour business, he prolly believes it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 5 January 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried to listen but I just can't cope with Moyles first thing in the morning (he was just about bearable on the way home from work) - we resorted to switching between Beat 106 and Clyde 1!!!!

smee (smee), Monday, 5 January 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Verdict please!

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 5 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

No-one could be worse than Moyles, so the meagre Cox wins the stand-off.

Naturally I hate Moyles' binman ad and like Cox's driving ad.

the coxfox, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Cox roxx. I don't think she's meagre at all. It's on ehr watch that mo' rnb/hip hop gets on the show -- she sounds enthusiastic about it, and i don't think she's just a playlist puppet for this reason.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

changed my mind to Cox. Moyles loses points for appearing in 'Proper Chrim-bo' video.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Cox was funny and not actually that bad generally, just an insane choice for a breakfast show - she's too loud and brash, and those I'M WACKY, ME silly accents were horrible at that hour.

Everything Moyles does is vile and noxious at any hour, even the dread Colinandedith double-header would be better than him.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Why the hate for Colin and Edith? I think they're okay -- better than post-97 Mark n Lard, fer example.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The title of this thread is almost a brilliant Jewish joke.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Enlighten us.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

NOTHING IS WORSE THAN EDITH, I REPEAT NOTHING!!! She is so very annoying. Colin on his own is ok. I prefer Mark & Lard being on at 1 so that I get to actually hear them properly & not miss some of it like i do in the mornings.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't find a decent link, but a moil is (I believe) the money you pay a rabbi to do a circumcision.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

And it all becomes clear!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha oh dear, North America not awake yet I see. A mohel (pron. "moil") IS the rabbi who performs the circumcision so given Moyles' back-stabbing it is triply brilliant.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I knew that when I started this thread already.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You want he should have to explain or something? Putzes.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I learn all of my Yiddish from Weird Al and Portnoy's Complaint. I don't know from Yiddish.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Missed it by a whisker, Sam

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Back in the 1998-9 time, I found Simon Mayo strangely bearable. Does that make me evil?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

This is why I neevr listen to anything but FiveLive.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Is there a complete and utter dirth of decent radio presenters at the moment? Cox is OK and kind of friendly, as opposed to the repellent Moyles, but neither are great. Mark & Lard have their fans, I find them nauseating though. And we complain about Zane Lowe but do you remember Steve Lamacq????

At least someone like John Peel or Danny Baker can retain attention with stories.

My pick for breakfast show: THE MIGHTY SIMON AMSTELL.
http://www.themightyboosh.inuk.com/images/amstell.gif

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 14 February 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon Amstell has a weird face. And, as good as a presenter he is, he would so not fit in at Radio 1.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 February 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"Simon Amstell has a weird face."

on radio this is a problem.

omg, Saturday, 14 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

For the webcam.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 14 February 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

he would so not fit in at Radio 1.

Why do you think this?

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 15 February 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe there's something wrong with me because I like both of them. I'm happy having the talk on the radio in the morning because it wakes me back up again between records, whereas I'd fall into catatonia listening to CDs or Radio Three. Those who don't listen to much Moyles may miss the fact that he's not serious. He knows full well he's not the saviour of Radio 1, he knows he's fat and bad looking, he knows he's dyslexic ... It's a strange sort of humour, too reliant on insult and aggression, but I'm pretty sure that it's representative of a certain type of humour in society, which is why he's popular.

I listen to bits of Radio 1 (and 3) all day long, working at home. All the daytime acts are outstanding, in my opinion, though I agree about the limited playlist. My blind spots are Zane Lowe and Spoony -dull - and Scott Mills (I actively dislike that twat).

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Sunday, 15 February 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not so much the fact that Moyles exists that annoys me, it's the fact that he's so successful. Can we not dredge up something better?

If of course he is an arch parody of a loutish bore, then he is shockingly accurate, but also fails because no-one sees that.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 15 February 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark & Lard are leaving Radio 1, how sad. :-(

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3503549.stm

there goes my last reason to listen to daytime radio 1. I can't believe they're splitting Mark & Lark up though!

*retunes radio to Radio 2 and saves up for a digital radio*

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

They're out of place. I loved them back in the day, 93/94, and they were a big part in me getting into music, but I prefer Colin and Edith now. It's acadmic since I work in an office most days. I'd like to get a digital radio, though.

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's a shame that Mark and Lard are leaving. Yes, their show was out of place, but that's why it was great. I would turn on my radio at 1, just to listen to them, to hear the 4 songs they picked each day. They've played great artists that even John Peel or Zane Lowe would play, and on daytime Radio 1!

Now that they're gone it's just going to be playlist all day. Just enough to drive you mad

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

*nods* Edith is the most irritating dj on radio 1 & she certainly has some competition!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I just like Murray, dunno. I loathe virtually all R1 DJs, thinking about it.

ENRQ (Enrique), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The mosty amusing thing about Moyles's Svaiour of Radio 1 schtick is that it has steadily lost audience ever since he joined the station in 1996. (Probably nowt to do with him but...)

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 19 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

And Moyles said he expects it to go on losing audience. He's right; it's bound to.

*

There's loads wrong with Radio 1 - the playlists in particular. But I'm positive about it. What are the alternatives for people who don't live in London or have any but the standard radio stations? Smashy and Nicey playing 10CC and "I will Survive", that's what, and adverts for garages and carpet warehouses.

I still pick up a lot of good music from R1, particularly on the Dance Shows. They also avoid playing the ultra-dreckest stuff, apart from on the Chart Show. They've not played recent hits by Michelle, Shane Ritchie, Gareth Gates, the Melua girl, or Samantha Mumba, so they do draw the line. Elton John complains that they're boycotting him. And in my opinion, Mark and Lard, Edith and Murray, Moyles, and Coxy, are all non-standard individuals with off-centre takes on the world. I like Pop Music, though, which is a prerequisite for listening to daytime R1 that cannot be got round.

All Bunged Up. (Jake Proudlock), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I love zane lowe. he is so genuinely enthusiastic and i do like it when he sings along (to system of a down esp).

jo whiley has also improved in the last yr or so, i find. she bigs up catchy pop/catchy rock/AOR/electro/dance.

lid, Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Interestingly, especially after the Blu and Sean fiasco of last year, Belle and Sebastian could well go top ten this weekend without Radio 1 playlisting. Why has the Radio 1 playlist ceased to have any relevance at all recently?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

because people can see through what radio 1 what to hype, and are always catching up, a bit like the NME?

Apparently they've just playlisted Jamie Cullum and and that really annoying DJ Casper record

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Are they going to lose listeners by chasing Radio 2's audience or gain them?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 February 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

All Bunged Up, I love pop music too, it's just I have to listen to half-wits blabber if I want to hear it on the radio. That's why I use the internet to hear most of my new stuff.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 19 February 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG! Fuxing edith & mediocre colin are to take over from Mark & Lard!
Time to switch stations methinks!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

one of my friends told me that shes started calling in sick to work so she can stay in and listen to moyles in the morning.

i think that IS sick.

(i don't hate him, just can't imagine staying home to listen)

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF? That is insania mate!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Mard & Lard's last show. :-(
