do you get it? how do you deal with it? also, airport bars: c/d?

Annouschka Magnatech (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't DO planes any more. I just don't.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i do get it, but usually only if i really feel that i can't get out of the vehicle or i'm closed in somehow due to lots of people or whatever. i'm pretty nervous about taking a long flight too but it's gotta be done someday and hopefully sooner rather than later.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Never get it at all. And I love airport bars too, especially when they're full of freebies you can pack yr hand luggage with.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I love travelling but I'm a slightly nervous flyer. A drink before/during the flight usually sorts me out so airport bars roxxor.

When it comes to things like check-in times, I'm enormously paranoid careful. I'll leave the biggest margin possible to account for possible delays in reaching stations/airports and invariably arrive sooper-early. Girlfriend is often despairing of amused by this.

robster (robster), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

When I am up in the air, it's cool, but the taking off sucks.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to get to the airport very early too, only because I love them so much (apart from food prices, which are ridiculous).

The only bit in flying that I really don't like is when you get a very slight amount of turbulence and just for a split second everything seems to stop, as if the plane will simply fall out of the air. That freaks me out a wee bit. Big turbulence though = no problem, just like a rollercoaster or summat. Kind of weird I know.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Rob, I get anxious about getting there on time, with all tickets, passports etc. Once I'm on the plane, through the passport control, etc. then I'm fine, before that I'm either verging on the panic attack, or being a control freak bitch to any poor unsuspecting travel companion.

I'm going to NYC next friday, and i started panicking about my passport two weeks ago.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I literally have to travel to the airport with a hand on my passport & tickets to make sure!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It's odd for me, as I've been flying at least once a year since I was like 2 or 3 years old, but I find myself getting more nervous each time I fly. When I was a kid, I didn't care at all, now my stomach gets all jumpy and I get white-knuckle syndrome. I basically try to avoid flying, but I haven't gotten to the point where I can't fly, I just get pretty nervous while I'm up in the air.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's all about getting older. For example, I have always loved roller coasters & the like, but recent trips to alton towers have proved me to be a complete pussy! The nerves I felt before I got on were tremendous!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I love all aspects of travel; it's a big adventure! I never even considered the possibility of travel anxiety. I'm also a early check-in person, and I come armed with way too much information. And snack bars; lots of powerbars are U&K when traveling. Bars are good if you have a long layover and are dead bored, otherwise they're a bit expensive to indulge in every trip.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I always take a book, some chewing gum, a puzzle book, a magazine, some water & some sweets to fly with. all are U&K!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a fabulous five hour layover in Newark coming up, any suggestions?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

go for a walk along the dyke, then go to the transport Cafe by the bridge, every breakfast comes with a free pint of grease! There's not much else though, maybe the sugar beet factory?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate planes. I was on a Pan Am jet about 20 years ago and an engine blew up just after take off. We had to jettison our fuel and make an emergency landing back at Miami. People passed out, a woman bit her lips to pieces and my mum was shouting "we're gonna die, we're gonna die". I found none of these things reassuring.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no problems with flying. The ear-popping thing is irritating but I'm never anxious about taking to the air. I don't like boats tho. No scratch that, boats are ok - I don't like waves.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think my ears pop anymore, or at least I just don't notice it. Since I've gotten older I have been overwhelmed by a cold gripped hand of death on take off and landing. But lately I just don't care. I figure if I'm going to crash my buoyant thoughts aren't going to save me so I might as well not freak myself out so regularly.

I highly recommend not drinking before or during flights unless that is the only way you will remain calm. Flying is already so dehydrating, you don't need alcohol to help exhaust you further. I also read on takeoff so as to make the time until you level off go by faster. I only like airports because I get to read all the magazines for free.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i get extreme travel/flight anxiety. i flew a lot as a kid and never minded it, but once i hit my early 20s i started turning into my mother: a total white-knuckler who screams "jesus christ!" during sudden bouts of turbulence. it's gotten worse over the past few years, which is unfortunate as i fly pretty much constantly for my job. this has given me a bit of aversion therapy, but i'm still a total mess before i have to get on a plane. anxiety starts a few days before the flight: i start imagining my travel-related demise a la the everly brothers' "ebony eyes", make my friends have going-away drinks with me in case the forthcoming trip is my last, call my parents to tell them that i love them, and generally carry on like a melodramatic idiot. the only thing that truly helps me have a less stressful flight is a strong sedative (xanax or diazepam), but failing that here a few things that help me :
-benadryl (drowsiness)
-an absorbing book (distraction)
-lots of cds (see above)
-something to soft to clutch on to, like a travel pillow (basically at thinly-veiled grown-up version of teddy bear)
-the knowledge that i am being an overreactive moron

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Is your job right back for Arsenal?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I won't fly, ever. I don't think I'll ever deal with this.

Sometimes, I think I'm going to have a panic attack on the tube (only when it's underground), but I never have. Yet, the thought is always there that I'm going to wig out or something. How do I deal with this? I either force myself to get on the train, or go on the bus. It's weird because I can go months without being worried and then it just hits me again.

I guess in both situations of flying and being underground are ones where I'm not in control, or can't get out of easily. You could say the same is true of most transport, but these fears aren't rational so it's a mute point.

autobot lover -- (jel), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I've flown twice in my life and I hated every second of it. But I suffer from severe anxiety attacks anyways, so I knew I would hate it. Haven't flown in two years and don't plan on it. Much to the dismay of my wife who is a human airplane.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so excited about my trip to rome! Xanax might be a really good idea for mr teeny, he's so tall and I think he may get a bit claustrophobic on the nine-hour flight. He tends to fret anyway.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Regardless, you've a right to your fears, Autobot. (Love the name, BTW!) A mate of mine feels the same when she's on trains. Doesn't bother me, but I respect her right to feel it.

I know I may get mugs chucked at me, but I honestly don't mind flying at all. That's always been the best part of travel for me: relaxing into the seat, as the plane lifts off the ground. I've flown so many times since I was a kid, that it doesn't bother me. (Those 6 hour flights can be a bitch though, once my legs lose feeling.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't imagine being on a ship/boat going far out enough that you can't see land. Being out in the middle of the ocean, or even worse, in a submarine way deep down in the ocean, sounds like the most frightening thing ever.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Teeny, I recommend the Newark Museum

http://www.newarkmuseum.org/

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I love all aspects of travel; it's a big adventure! I never even considered the possibility of travel anxiety.

Ditto

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I feel like I have been living some sort of charmed existence! I have had panic attacks before and they're no fun, so sympathies to those who have travel anxiety, but somehow travel makes me feel so liberated that I can't be anything other than excited. I am probably just begging to have a miserable travel experience now. :/

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

travelling doesn't bug me at all, but for some reason, the night before a trip I can never sleep. Doesn't matter if it's by plane, train, car or boat - I just can never fall asleep.

hstencil, Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I tolerate planes. Just barely. I've got eight and a half hours until my plane departs from JFK, and I'm already jumpy and depressed. It always feels like I'm marching towards a death sentence. Plus there might be bad weather in NYC when I leave, I've flown through bad weather before I don't want to do that again. This is also my flight in ten years and my first transatlantic flight in fifteen years and I don't really now how I *should* feel.

Plus I've got a whole array of minor but ridiculous fusses and concerns (re: airport security, passport, luggage, etc.) about the vacation that I'm sure Ned and Chris B. wouldn't find terribly surprising after Terrastock.

Also, right now I have a mild case of swimmer's ear that, given my plans, I can't really do anything about, and I'm concerned it might develop into a full-blown earache.

My hope is that once I get on the plane I'll just fall asleep and I won't have to THINK during most of my flight. I plan to read a book that I know from experience will bore me to sleep: Beckett's Molloy.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i hear you. at the risk of sounding like a crazy pill-pusher, perhaps you should take some nytol or something to knock yourself out? if you're anything like me, you'll be too nervous on the flight to fall asleep without assistance, no matter how tired you are. and try not to worry about the weather. if there is a real danger, you won't be taking off (especially transatlantically).

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I very much enjoy flying (though I don’t enjoy the parking and the parking shuttles and the people movers and the waiting in lines). There seems to be ever-decreasing leg space, though—I’m 6’4”, and it becomes quite uncomfortable when the seat in front of me comes back. The movies are invariably bad.

Airport bars, while crazy expensive, are classic. There are few better places to watch people than in an airport. It’s amazing. And even better if you’re pissed. It’s a pain to have to frequently visit the airplane restrooms, though.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I can put up with all the minor inconveniences of air travel because, you know, I can get to, say, LA in 3 hours rather than 3 days. Bitching about bad movies or lines just seem silly. YOU'RE FLYING THROUGH THE AIR AT HUNDREDS OF MILES PER HOUR! How cool is that?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I do need to take motion-sickness medicine for the flight (I've never thrown up on a plane, but I do get nauseous from time to time), and while Bonine is superior to Dramamine (Mark I) in every way (no side effects, longer lasting, nicer tasting), Dramamine knocks me out cold, so I might take that instead.

Since my plane leaves at 11:10, it would really suck it weather delayed the flight.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Arrghfuck there's already a wind advisory until 11:20.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The pilots don't want to crash either.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'm finally off to London. See you guys around.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Teeny- what terminal in Newark are you going to? Terminal C is almost a shopping mall now... there's a little DKNY store, 4 bookstores, a L'Occitaine, and lots of other ones. I seem to recall the other terminals being not quite as nice, which isn't that surprising, since newark really is mostly Continental, and they're clustered in C.

You can also catch the airtrain at Newark, which will connect you onto the trains into NYC.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Boats don't scare me. I've been on a cruise out in the middle of the atlantic and it was great. probably because i was bombed the whole time.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Boats scare me more than planes.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i love airports, cabbage we shd do an airport FAP!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

bah daddino's flight MUST have been delayed by that "storm system", it has not yet landed (two hours after arrival time)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think an airport bar fap would be great but tremendously expensive. Maybe we bring our own flasks.

I'm not sure what terminal I'll be in at Newark but since I'm connecting to Rome it will probably be the fanciest one with the duty free shops and such. I doubt I will be leaving the airport (as much as I would love to nip over to NYC!) because it's such a pain getting through security, and I'll be traveling at a busy time. The shops sound great, but I want to save my money for Rome! So it will probably be naptime in Newark.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Observation gallery at Heathrow?

chris (chris), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

For this to work, we should agree a time and then arrive two hours beforehand

robster (robster), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

natch.
A few months ago I had a meeting near Birmingham international and was early for my train back, it was great, I got the monorail (MONORAIL MONORAIL) over to the airport and wandered around amidst the Milan fans all returning from the European Cup final, the atmosphere was marvellous.
