I just turned on the TV and found about this. This NYT article is a bit old but here it is.

Is the rumour that the captain commited suicide true?

fletrejet, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

NY1 reported that he shot himself with a BB gun and is alive in the hospital, but Bloomberg dispelled this rumor.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

this is just horrible. the destruction of the ferry is horrendous. what a strange day here in nyc, with these ridiculous winds.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I live in Staten Island. I take the ferry all the time.

I heard that teh dude tried to slash his wrists. Bummer, that. Pretty horrible.

Not to be callous, but, with ferry service suspended indefinitely, I am REALLY not looking forward to my morning commute on the express bus with all the displaced ferry riders.

Limbs torn off, a decapitation; jesus christ.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 16 October 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Former Reuters bureau chief told me this morning that he ran away because he was afraid people would think he was connected with Al-Qaeda.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently the driver tried to commit suicide which is odd. I mean, ferry crashes, driver legs it & tries to commit suicide.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought I heard on the radio that he was found to have taken drugs. *NOT CONFIRMED*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really odd - driver found out what he had caused and was overwhelmed with guilt, surely?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Well overwhelmed with guilt of course, but 'accidents' can happen, it just seemed to me a bit of a quick thing for him to do is all.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I was surprised that this was the lead news item on BBC Radio London this morning.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking the same thing, did things like Hatfield or Clapham get as much coverage in the states?

chris (chris), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

When my plane caught fire in Denver my Mum saw it on the BBC lunchtime news.

My immediate reaction was "...and thousands of tourists curse the disappearance of the cheapo Manhattan skyline view". My next thoughts were more humanitarian, obv.

So remind me again, why was the Staten Island Ferry free? Could they just not figure out a way to put in Travelcard turnstyles?

Or was it some weird holdover from the Colonial Age, like when that farmer in Schenechtady sold his land to the NY Thruway Authority on the condition that his bit of the Thruway had to be free, forever? (At least, that is the explanation I've heard for why that bit of the I-90 is free through Schenectady...)

So remind me again, why was the Staten Island Ferry free? Could they just not figure out a way to put in Travelcard turnstyles?

NYC used to squeeze riders for 50 cents (each way), til ex-budget killer (read, Mayor) Guiliani made it free---prolly to win some election

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It was to eliminate two-fare commutes within the five boroughs. And, of course, to win an election.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

????

I don't remember bus/train two fare commutes being eliminated. But I guess that Guiliani just didn't care about Queens as much as Staten Island. FuXor.

kate (kate), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, those were eliminated by the introduction of the metrocard. It's always free to transfer from bus to bus, bus to subway, or subway to bus w/a metrocard.

I sound like I work for the city or something. Um, fuck Giuliani. There, that's better.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

So, back to my original point - WHY WASN'T THE BLOODY FERRY JUST INCLUDED IN THE METROCARD, THEN?!?!?

kate (kate), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Would have have made too much sense, obv.
