No - help ME! (obscure half-remembered film pt 2)

OK so once on TV I saw this French film. Made and set in the 80s. It was like an Eric Rohmer film, but I don't think it was him. Involved two teenage (16? 17?) girls who early on in film met at some summer holiday camp. Later on one came round to the other's family's apartment for dinner I think.

KEY REMEMBERED SCENE: One of the girls is gorgeous and sleeps in the nude. Her mum comes in one morning to wake her up / tell her something and as girl rolls out of bed she tells her it's unseemly and she ought to wear something in bed.

Won't somebody help me?

it sounds like a french film called Virgin which Film 4 world have been showing lately, it's rather good. But there's only one girl in that, and her brother and a greasy older man. But it is set in a holiday camp.

chris, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, it's not set in a holiday camp. That's just one early scene. In fact the whole holiday camp thing may come from another film - I can't be sure. The KEY thing, as I say, is that it involves that scene with her rolling out of bed naked and her mum tutting.

Nick, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there is a scene similar in this one only it's not her Mum, it's the greasy older man's sister or something like that and she does tut a lot. There's also a scene in a pavement cafe where the young girl causes a big kerfuffle and storms off leaving chattering posh old ladies in her wake.

there are bits in seedy nightclubs as well, and she sleeps with a really ugly ginger boy with baaad teeth

chris, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you shure it wasn't "Meatballs"

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wish I could help but this sounds like every French film ever made. :) Sure would like to find out what the title is though, looks like a classic.

Omar, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds like a fantastic film, Nick. Could it be L'APPÂT (1995) by Bertrand Tavernier? I've never seen it, but it's about two teenage girls who decide they need lots of money to get to America or something. And what better way of earning lots of money than rolling out of bed in the nude? The film is based on the book about the Valérie Subra case by Morgan Sportès. One of the scenes involves the two girls in the bath. I'm sure it's this film. It must be. Mustn't it?

Peter Miller, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeez, that sounds much better than the one I thought it was.

chris, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This film is getting better and better. :)

Omar, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure that is not just a wet dream which took place in a summer camp? After watching 'pauline a la plage' or 'la genou de claire', that could be a fab excuse.

Laetitia, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, I have investigated 'Virgin' in my Film Four guide and think it is not that. I see it's made by depressing erection film woman. Anyway, I'm convinced it was her mother who told her off for nudie sleeping, not a greasy older man's sister.

PETER MILLER! Fancy that! Welcome. But I think you're off the money with this. No way is it from 1995. This film has been invading my dreamlife since at least 1989.

Nick, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah but never mind, next time it's on Film4world I'll tape it anyway as it's good. I want to see this film of yours though.

Yeah, Peter Miller... who'd a thunk it?

Won't somebody help me?

one year passes...
Need more information. Any idea on the year?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Early-mid 80s, I think.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

This has been bugging you for two and a half years?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

DO you remember anything else but a nekkid girl being told off for being nekkid?

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but I am worried that like the holiday camp bit, it might be from another film. For example, they go round a department store at one point and I think one of them shoplifts some clothes.

But it's the film with naked rolling out of bed that's the 'important' one.

Tuomas - it's been bothering me for about 15 years. But I don't lay awake at night. Naked.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

There are only two IMDb hits for "France + summer camp + 1970-1990", neither of which looks promising :

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0074152/
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0078122/

Frühlingsj4n (Wintermute), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

And there's only one for "nude girl" - I doubt that's the one you're looking for :

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0066914/

Frühlingsj4n (Wintermute), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

But look at this - "two girls", 1987, Rohmer :

Frühlingsj4n (Wintermute), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that '4 aventures de Reinette et Mirabelle' is the film I have been melding it with in my mind. I don't think it's the one. So we're back to the girl being told off for sleeping in the nod. Sorry.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

One last try :

Three girls: Susanne, Annie and Catherine, just have finished high school and meet every night to have a good time in discos and bars with frequently changing boyfriends. Susanne's younger sister Betty often joins them and copies their behavior, believes everything they say. So she soon ends up with with projectionist George - although she doesn't take the pill yet.

I would love this to be the exact wording of my pitch to a film company.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Just let it go, you dirty bastard.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

She was so lovely.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, nick.

does anyone remember a film that might be australian and has everyone on earth (or in australia, at least) vanish, save for three people: a bald guy, a kinda tough guy and a lady? they wander about and stuff goes on and they have recurring visions/dreams, maybe, and then the bald one drives a juggernaut into a nuclear power station to make it blow up (I think).

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i do remember that one.

They all comitted suicide at the same time as the world ended, therefore they survived.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

after the power station thing, only one of them was left.

And wondering, what now?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, yeah, the bald guy was remembering drowning, in a bath.

what else?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Quiet Earth

Frühlingsj4n (Wintermute), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks! I wonder if it's crap.

Summary: Shut if off before it was over

I started watching this movie (which most commentors seem to love), but shut it off when he walks out on the balcony dressed like Julius Caesar and addresses the cardboard cut outs. Too strange for me. I popped it out of the VCR and took it back to the video store.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The chat pages rate it better and have theories about the ending...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes. I was gonna ask about that. WTF was up with them clouds?

Frühlingsj4n (Wintermute), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

When the grid was activated and the power field enveloped the Earth, all animal life was caught up in a kind of quantum shift that transported or more precisely translated their existence to other gravity wells, meaning planets. One of the theories of quantum dynamics is that of simultaneity, or the idea that events can have effects on each other over vast distances without any time occuring in between. An electronic shift in an atom on Earth can effect the shift of another atom on a planet in the Andromeda galaxy. No one has figured why this happens, yet, but evidence has shown it's a possibility. Something to do with superstring theory. Anyway, hypothetically if the mathematical definition of something's place in the universe were adjusted, it could cease to be in one place and instantly come into existence again in another place. (This is the theory of matter tranmission which IBM is working on over in Glasgow.) Why this would only happen to animal life is probably associated with the electro-neural activity, which plants do not have. Our nervous system can act like a very large antenna, as there are some thousands (or maybe tens of thousands) of miles of nerves in the human body (some say this is the hypothetical basis of telepathy, available to some individuals whose nervous antennae are more in tune with each other, with similar frequencies.) Also, the nervous system frequency is very closely related to the Earth's base harmonic frequency of 8 Hertz, which results from the magnetic field inductance as Earth passes through the Sun's electronic field. Anyway, to make this long story short, when the power grid field rose, it created a quantum harmonic instant that teleported all animal life on Earth to distant other planets, instant and total diaspora of the human race. Excluded were those whose nervous systems had just become unsynchronized with the Earth harmonic. This does not explain why those who were dying at the instant suddenly stopped dying and came back to life, but it could have been that they received a jolt, sort of a massive neural defibrilation, from the sudden rise of the field. The very effect that relocated all other life also jolted these dying people back to life (except for that couple lying by their car at the side of the road, who could have died either after the effect, or were too damaged to come back to life fully.) So, we jump to the end of the film. The truck explodes, killing Zac Hobson and destroying the antenna. The power grid field collapses, causing another quantum effect, but in the opposite direction. Zac dies and the moment the field collapses, and he finds himself not dead but whole and transported to another planet somewhere else in the universe.

"the theory of matter tranmission which IBM is working on over in Glasgow"

why didn't my college advisor point in the direction of the interesting jobs?

haha how did your thread end up a discussion about Quiet Earth?

Ste, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 13:20 (sixteen years ago)

Ah this thread. When you say holiday camp, do you mean caravan site?

Pete, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

Yes.

Alba, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

nine years pass...

The answer was A Nos Amours (Pialat, 1983), or at least half the answer.
