Well Canadians, they're finally uniting the right. What do we think?

I personally think that for now it doesn't really matter much since as a nation we've moved so much to the center over the last 10 years. Will the infusion of the PCs and their slightly more moderate policies into the Alliance move them enough to the center to where they may have a chance a couple of elections down the road, or are they just plain fucked? Who should they pick as leader? I vote for Evan Solomon because I hate that guy. Ben Mulroney could be a good leader to hate on, too. DISCUSS!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

is evan solomon r/w?!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably not but that's not my point.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Evan Solomon a right-leaner?
Ben Mulroney is Canada's best himbo since Gino Vanelli.
It's weird because both of the parties are so screwed up and neither one would be capable of forming gov't at present even if they got the votes.
Hitching your wagon to two lame mares instead of one...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

if that's not your point, why not Evan Dando then?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Because I like Evan Dando and he's not nearly as smug. Ben Mulroney reminds me of that whiny guy on Mad TV, you know, the girly man.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, please use can-con pop refrence

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

this sounds like a job for paul hyde

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

and i totally don't like this "merger" one bit. mainly because i don't want to see canada become a 2 party system and this is a step in that direction.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

don't worry. they won't be able to stay together.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok dyson, Ben reminds me of the Chicken Lady.
What the hell happened to Paul Hyde? I think Paul from Blue Peter would make a good Speaker of the House. He could do that dance like in the "Don't Walk On Past" video everytime he opens Parliament.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

NEVER EVER FORGET: The Alliance Party was briefly called CCRAP.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

pc + ccrap = pc. o' crap¿

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been told by someone who knows that many long-time PC MPs are simply going to retire before the next election rather than run as candidates for this new party, so any thoughts I may have had regarding a moderating influence from the PC members may be mentalism. This of course means that the new party will stay just as messed up as the PCs and Alliance are now. Paul Martin's promises he's recently been making about trying to strengthen Alberta's (and BC's I guess) presence in Confederation (does anyone say that anymore?) will fuck the new party even more if it succeeds. You're right, dyson. With the NDP becoming increasingly irrelevant federally, that seems to be what we're moving towards. Is a merger with the US far behind?

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you think the U.S. would be interested in a merger with Canada? It woudl ruin all of my escapist fantasies, certainly.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It'll probably never officially happen Chris so don't worry. We do lament the influence the US has over us, but there isn't much we can do about it. We get rich off of you guys so I guess we shouldn't complain too much.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

This disturbs me greatly. I'd vote PC if given half the chance (last two candidates I had a choice of one was a 25 year IBM veteran (overqualified to fall asleep in Commons) and the other was a local politican who hated university students).
I despise the Alliance, from that manthing Debbie to Harper to [Doris] Day and reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeform leader Bat Manning. They really have a hardon for America which disturbs me.

That said: You heard it on ILX from me first, Mike Harris next PC PM.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

A bunch of cowboy politicans and a bunch of blue bloods in one party.

Compare Deborah Grey to Elsie Wayne and you'll find only one has class.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

that would Deb, right?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You heard it on ILX from me first, Mike Harris next PC PM.

Sure, when Mike Harris is 80 years old! You think he'll be able to tear himself off the golf course long enough to run?

I work with one guy who looks almost exactly the same as Preston Manning and another guy who looks a lot like George Dubya. Terrifying to walk into the office most days.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Elsie hasn't lost an election since going into politics in the 60s so it sure as hell isn't that Debra Grey thingy.

Sure, when Mike Harris is 80 years old! You think he'll be able to tear himself off the golf course long enough to run?

He's already declared his interest in leading the party. He's just got to get his party in order for the next election after Martin blows up in his own face. You can only intimidate your own party for so long.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

FDR and Mackenzie-King were friends as well Horace.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

But did M-K ever slobber all FDR (the subject of a new, dense bio by Lord Conrad Black) the BM the PM did for Reagan?
And hey, is Brian wearing women's shoes in the photo?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Im not going to say I liked BM and Rayguns singing Irish tenor tunes together but I wouldn't say he had nearly the say relationship with Bush the Elder. And lets forget about Kim Clark just like everyone forgets about John Turner.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

BM and GB I are still good-buddies. They sit on a few boards together, and were both involved in Bre-X.
In fact, obscure Bush scion Lonsdale Rutherford Bush sang at Caroline Mulroney's wedding reception with his band, the NAFTones.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(ps, my last sentence is all lies)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

mike harris running the pc's o' crap is terrifying. terrifying because he'd probably be a good leader (for the party not the country) & with could pull in a decent amount of support. he's already proved himself to be a far better leader than those snorefests currently in charge of either parties. or their predecessors.
i'm scarred now. what if he's the next bm¿ he'll insert the u.s.'s cock so far down canada's throat i'll have no choice but to move to new zealand.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

if canada is the mouth that takes the U.S. cock, what does that make NZ at the other end of the world?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i miss joe clark :(

jones (actual), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ew.
it makes them as far from the u.s. as possible without having to learn a new language.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss Joe Clark's daughter being in the paper.

But what did MH do to hump the US legs? The provincial Tories haven't been on the best of terms with Michigan or NY. He's social policies are more towards Alliance leanings then I'd like but they are still well left of Reeeeeeeeeeeeform yahoos.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

if canada is the mouth that takes the U.S. cock

I'll be there in December, sweetie.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it was Alberta where they were talking about jumping ship to the states so you may be in luck Chris.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Some reasons I'd rather not have Mike Harris as a national leader (taken from here:
"Harris leaves a legacy without real successes, but instead a record marked by conflict, animosity, divisiveness, hunger, poverty, homelessness and death," according to Ernie Lightman, a professor of Social Policy at the University of Toronto. "Those who got rich during his watch – and they got very rich – see these outcomes as minor problems, but to most Ontarians, he (Harris) can't leave too soon."

"The final years of his premiership were dogged by controversy, including the water contamination crisis in Walkerton, Ont., which resulted in Harris travelling to the small town of 2,500 northwest of Toronto to express sympathy to the locals – but not to apologize. Seven died as a result of E. coli contamination in Walkerton and more than half the townspeople became seriously ill."

Perhaps you guys in Ontario are just so sick of hearing about the shitty things that happened during his leadership that you've just put them aside, er I mean YOU'RE so sick of them, Noodles! I think it would be disastrous for the new Conservative party to have Harris as leader. Do you think they would buy some sort of new Common Sense Revolution in Quebec or Newfoundland or even here in Manitoba or Saskatchewan? I doubt it.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

But what did MH do to hump the US leg
the most infuriating incident, for me, came back when the u.s. was banging its chest threatening to invade iraq. harris was going on about how he thought canadians should rally (without question) behind our good neighbours and went on (in true bm fashion) about canadian political insubordination for not following along. perhaps i am reading too much into that incident - but whatever - i kinda respected harris up until that point.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

If your going to bring in Walkerton I don't blame Harris' government at all. It was two local officals astounding level of incompitence that caused that, not the government cuts.

Do you think they would buy some sort of new Common Sense Revolution in Quebec or Newfoundland or even here in Manitoba or Saskatchewan? I doubt it.

Quebec is just going to vote Bloc/liberal again so why bother?

Maritimes has become a federal PC stronghold of sorts in no small part due to Elsie's popularity. The flat lands are cookoo for Reeeeeform so they are hoping to combine to the too and end the vote splitting which is why the liberals have been cleaning up Ontario.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Dyson, I never read anything about his response to the US invasion. I remeber Eves saying the same thing. That would be unfortunate views for him to have in my opinion.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

will this new party accept Jim Pankiw?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.jimpankiw.com/Biography/JP_CanadianPress.jpg

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't the point about Walkerton that if there hadn't been cuts in the number of inspectors it might've been caught? Elsie and Rick Borotsik (Brandon-Souris, my old home riding) are two of the venerable PC MPs that will probably retire rather than run as candidates for this new party.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

did you mean to say VENEREAL PC MPs?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Reasons I have supported Harris, from Bryan's Article:
"Harris promised many things and one of his legacies might be that he took great pride in making his promises stick. "

Which is my favorite reason for any support I gave him. Recently elected provincial Liberals have already broken one of their major campaign promises in regards to budget.

AND

"He cut taxes, reduced the size of government in the province, cracked down on welfare, encouraged work-for-welfare programs, merged school boards, overhauled the curriculum, amalgamated municipalities, reformed property taxes and rearranged Ontario Hydro"

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"He cut taxes, reduced the size of government in the province, cracked down on welfare, encouraged work-for-welfare programs, merged
school boards, overhauled the curriculum, amalgamated municipalities, reformed property taxes and rearranged Ontario Hydro"

and at whose expense?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't the point about Walkerton that if there hadn't been cuts in the number of inspectors it might've been caught?

Thats what the opposition claim. And in most cases it could quite possibly. But in Walkerton you just would have had these people overseeing more people and spreading their incompitence across more towns and people.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you mean whose expense?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Or is not running a balanced budget a good thing unless its the Liberal party doing it? So for Chretien its a good thing to balance the federal budget but provincially they should rack up debt?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

he did do what he said he would, which is why i respected him to the degree i once did. although i can't say i agree with him on most issues.

and does the line "rearranged Ontario Hydro " creep the shit out of anyone else¿

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

and the provincial budget was balanced by selling off its assets. that's not necessarily a good way of going about it.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the name? It's from The Count of Monte Cristo, Luigi Vampa was the king of the bandits who often helped out with the more unsavoury aspects of the Count's mission of Providence.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ahh. so is he a role model to you then¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I like his name, and, uh, I've been trying to model my life after the Count's actually for the last 10 months (y'know, get filthy rich, kill my perceived enemies, eat a lot of fine hash, etc).

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

nice. inspired by this thread no doubt.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez. Belinda kinda looks like a puppet on her website. Photo gallery! At least she's honest about it. She's here tonight which sucks as I'm gonna be busy.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

In a way, I hope she gets to be PM right quick if only so that Bush can give her a nickname.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Belinda was on a local radio talk show here today for her first interview after declaring her candidacy. You're right, Luigi - she's a horrible speaker. I listened to the first couple of minutes of it and I can't remember the last time I heard so many ums and ers...well, maybe the last time I had a testicular exam.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, having a testicular exam performed by Belinda...

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm sick of her now.

sym (shmuel), Thursday, 22 January 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what I was getting at above! She's YUMMY!!! I hope she falls more to the progressive side of the party though with an endorsement from Mike Harris I doubt she would (Noodles to thread to rebut?). I'm a little bit curious to find out what her politics are. She'll be here soon so maybe I should talk my boss into letting me go to whatever rally she has and then I can hit on her!

She's probably the second or third worst choice after Harper and that other reform loonie. Much like the other mega rich she could have done a lot more work by not running. Like Black and Asper in years past she had friends in all sorts of spots across the country. But unlike the Irvings no one seems to hate Magna with the same passion. Without Izzy, Conrad and her (now that she's a public figure) there is a huge demand for rich people to pamper our nation's politicians with fishing trips, dinners and donations.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 22 January 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be amazed if anyone can keep the Refooooooooooorm cowboys on a tight leash.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 22 January 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

no one seems to hate Magna with the same passion

Fucking inferior car parts!

sym (shmuel), Thursday, 22 January 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget sappy essay contests.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 22 January 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Asked if that perception was solidified when Chrétien mused about lighting up a joint after he left office, Cellucci reacted with a nod and sustained chuckle.

God I already miss him.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(my connection went down while I was trying to post this a few hours ago - it's in repsponse to Bryan's article link)

"What we have here is the coming home to roost of the whole culture of celebrity politics . . . the MuchMusic view of the world that if you look good and present well on stage you're going to be interesting to the world."

Haha - the omnipresent "Much Music view of the world"! I guess there is a point there, although I think they've almost got it backwards - meaning that at least an equal part of the problem here is that she's being evaluated because of how how she looks, probably moreso than her marketing is capitalizing on it. The headline today by her picture on The Sun (crap paper, I know) was "Blonde Ambition!". WTF. I'm so thrilled that her hair is what's important here - you don't see screaming headlines about any of the grey haired men in politics saying "Steel Wheels!" I mean fuckrightoff.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sun seems to get a free pass on alot of things sadly. I chalk it up to the colour comics.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, wait, you were actually expecting more than a base-level, reactionary, unintelligent pile of horseshit from the Sun? What were you thinking?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, I was expecting a girl in a bikini on the back page. Instead THEY PUT THEM ON THE COVER!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

If only it were a "Sun thing" with their Tits and Lies and all that -well, I'd be much happier. Unfortunately I'm hearing the same lame things elsewhere, The Sun is just the most blatant about it.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

My favourite thing about the Sun is when they put some swimsuit model on the cover right next to a huge headline saying something like POLICE APPOINT NEW ETHICS COMMISSIONER.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe the layout editor just assumes that the police dress code is really relaxed these days?

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 22 January 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

sym (shmuel), Thursday, 22 January 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

we actuallly got a letter yesterday wondering why our newspaper doesn't provide SK women with the oppotunity to appear in our pages in bkikins. the letter-writer even said he knew someone who really wanted to.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

To do that she will "bake a bigger economic pie" - an image she repeated a half dozen times on the open-line show. I like pie.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Where in our fair country is this wondrous publication located?
if you're asking about the sun, it's in toronto. yup, that's where it rises and sets.
also toronto has the stars and the moon too. all revolving around it.

The Dar Heatherington saga takes a new wacky turn. Now the question is: who will play her (here's a pic) in the CBC made for TV movie? I vote for Kevin McDonald.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

if CTV does a telemovie it'll definitely be Wendy Crewson though.

Huckadelia (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

but I agree that Kevin McDonald would be best.

Huckadelia (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed - he is the only person equiped to play the role.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Well, what about the Public Works scandal? The piano player in a brothel analogy works for me sort of. Martin will technically be able to deny he knew about it but come on, $100,000,000 funneled into Quebec Liberal-friendly firms and he, a Quebec minister, knew nothing about it? Are we all already sick of this story? Are we all fucking sick of public inquiries?

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

And what the hell is up with Belinda? As soon as that Globe (the U.S. tabloid) cover appeared claiming she's knocking boots with Bill Clinton, she dropped off the face of the earth! Whatta maroon!

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ps. maybe it's time for a new catch-all Canadian Current Events thread?

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup. We'll/you'll just have to come up with a catchy thread title. You're the headline guy, Huck. Have at 'er.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmmm... SUPERSEXY CANADIAN CURRENT EVENTS A-GO-GO! Sleeping With Elephants, C/D? Grits & Gravy Elsie Wayne, Queen of the Valkyries!

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Name it: "Worthwhile Canadian Initiative! And Sex!"

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Why don't you go ahead? That would be a fine title.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Fine. I will.

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I still like this one the best.
You know, if Martin had his way the PC's could have switched platforms with the Liberals. For some reason, the crap he is shuffling on Shelia Copps, complete with parachuting one of his cabinet ministers to fight for her riding pisses me off more.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

what does this liberal thing do to the conseratives & the ndp ? Also I am meeting David Orchard next week, if anyone wants to know anything, ill ask.

Conservatives reject nomination bid by former Sask. premier Grant Devine By Tim Cook REGINA (CP) — Former Saskatchewan premier Grant Devine — the man who led the province during one of the biggest political scandals in modern Canadian politics — won’t be allowed to seek a nomination for the federal Conservatives, the party announced Thursday. “The national nominations committee, in consultation with the local nominations committee for Souris-Moose Mountain, has determined that Mr. Devine’s name would not be entered in the contest for the Conservative party nomination for Souris-Moose Mountain, said party official Tom Jarmyn. He would not provide a reason for rejecting Devine’s nomination bid. Devine called a news conference for Thursday afternoon in Regina. Devine and his provincial Tories governed Saskatchewan from 1982 to 1991. Sixteen Conservative members of the legislature and caucus workers ended up being convicted of fraud and breach of trust from 1987 to 1991 for illegally claiming hundreds of thousands of dollars from government allowances. The main scheme involved filing false expense claims based on phoney invoices to numbered companies. While the scandal happened on Devine’s watch, he was never linked to it, nor was he ever charged. Devine announced last month that he was seeking the nomination for the federal Conservatives. “The fire’s still there, he said at the time. Roy Bailey, the Canadian Alliance MP who represents the riding, is not seeking re-election. One of the challengers for the nomination, Ed Komarnicki, said he would have preferred to have delegates in the constituency decide whether Devine should run or not. “It’s something that should have been decided locally, Komarnicki said when contacted by The Canadian Press and told the news. “We have been in the membership sales and, by my records and information, we have outsold him and we are confident we can win on the ground and would have won on the ground. “That is the way we would have preferred it. The highest-profile Saskatchewan Tory caught up in the expense claim scam was Senator Eric Berntson, who was convicted in 1999 of 11 counts of fraud stemming back to his days in the Saskatchewan legislature. The Conservatives lost the 1991 provincial election when the NDP, under Roy Romanow, won a landslide majority. During its years in power, the Devine government ran huge deficits. When the Tories were removed from office the NDP claimed that the province was on the brink of bankruptcy.
