Five years ago tomorrow, the worst flood in San Antonio history began. It was a three-day event, lasting from Saturday, October 17, 1998 to Monday, October 19, 1998, and on the last day of the flood, San Antonio recorded the biggest single-day amount of rainfall ever since records started being kept -- at least 11 inches in a 24-hour period. This event occurred after one of the worst summertime droughts in local history, when rainfall was at a premium and especially tight water restrictions were put in place.

Personal memory? I remember waking up early on Monday morning, wondering if the rains would stop and also wondering if school was still going to be in session. Needless to say, once I saw the rain cascading down, I knew that everything was going to be closed.

Five years ago tomorrow. And it seems as though it was just about five weeks ago. Wow.

*holds back tears* It's still too soon...

Are you being serious or are you just taking the piss? Because I do recognize that this might be viewed as one of those trite and meaningless threads, sure, but this was The Big Event that I've truly lived through (Sept. 11 being an event I witnessed on TV from afar and thus a completely different animal), and I thought it interesting that its first milestone anniversary was going to be coming up. Understood?

Sadly, no...

Dee I don't really remember much about this. I was living in NYC at the time. But floods can be insanely devasting. Asshat (to troll above). Did you or your familty withstand much damage?

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 17 October 2003 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok then, Jonas. I'm just constantly on guard because I figure this wouldn't exactly be the most nurturing place for "walk down memory lane"-style posts such as this. What's your flood story, then?

And Sam... *snort* I figured this story wouldn't get much national coverage. Heck, I suppose it was a stroke of luck that it got maybe 15 - 20 seconds of coverage on CNN. Anyway, we live near the top of a hill and our street has adequate drainage, so we weren't directly affected, but a lot of other places WERE, and my old neighborhood sustained a bit of flood damage.

Never heard of those floods sorry. But I can only imagine the damage. When the Red River flooded it wrecked up the prarries pretty damm good.

Me neither, but I went through the Prague floods last year, so I can pretty much relate..
