Dog Beats Man in Breath Freshness Test

Oct. 16 — LONDON (Reuters) - More than half of Britons could have breath that smells worse that their pet's, according to a survey released on Thursday.
And women are the worst offenders, with three out of five failing a sulfur emissions test, according to research by toothpaste manufacturer Aquafresh.

"Some mouths may be dirtier than cat litter," dentist Brian Grieveson said in a statement that accompanied the research.

"Most people in the UK do not realize that cleaning your tongue is as important as cleaning your teeth," he added.

Scots had the best oral hygiene, with only 10 percent suffering bad breath, compared to 27 percent in London. Throughout the nation, 52 percent were rated at a level that could be worse than that of a pet animal.

"We are one of the last countries to understand the need to clean our tongue, with people in America and parts of Europe practicing tongue cleaning routinely," said Grieveson.

Secretaries were the freshest profession, achieving 100 percent freshness in the survey of 1,000 people, while retail staff fared worst and received the warning: "You could be losing sales."

how embarassing

stevem (blueski), Friday, 17 October 2003 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed, but I do not really trust Aquafresh to be impartial.

haha "research by toothpaste manufacturer aquafresh", whose new produckt is about to hit the market no doubt!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 17 October 2003 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

what are you supposed to do? Smear toothpaste on your tongue?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 17 October 2003 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

For once I am proud to be a secretary.

(MarkH you can buy tongue scrapers, or just use a razor)

Emma, Friday, 17 October 2003 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ewwwwww. Who shaves their tongue?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 October 2003 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

God, you mean you don't? gross.

Emma, Friday, 17 October 2003 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I brush mine with my electric toothbrush - I don't know if that's any use.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely that's what mouthwash is for, so you don't have to undertake in barbarian rituals like shaving your tongue.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think the long term use of mouthwash is a good idea. It kills the good bacteria or something.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought 'good bacteria' was just a marketing ploy to sell rancid milk drinks to idiots?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

N is the guy in that ad.

Sam (chirombo), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I do love Actimel.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

In future I will put a disclaimer on flippant remarks about tongue shaving just in case any ILXers decide to try it at home without the supervision of an adult / carer.

Emma, Friday, 17 October 2003 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

With all this talk of "freshness", secretaries, good bacteria and shaving I'm suddenly not sure if we're talking about what I thought we were talking about.

Sam (chirombo), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I find it helps if you pour yoghurt on it.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I got this great mouthwash - Dentyl. When you've slooshed it around and spat it out, there are all these green globby bits in the sink, which the label informs me are washed off plaque, so you can actually SEE it works. It also comes in an oil/vinegar-style separated state and you have to shake it all up before you use it. I think you can get a Lynx shower gel that needs shaking like vinaigrette too.

Sandpaper works.

Alex K (Alex K), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

are there any bacteria that aren't particularly good or bad, but are just average? It does seem like a false dichotomy to me.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to work for the company that distributed that Dentyl. (useless trivia factoid!) It's great isn't it.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i clean my tongue but then again, as a smoker i´m probably on a hiding to nowhere as trying to maintain far as minty freshness goes...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Bacteria who hang out by the pre-molars, shootin' the breeze and drinkin' PBR, but they're basically good kids, and don't get into no trouble.

"you bacteria kids will never amount to anything!"

"Yeah, whatever"

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 19 October 2003 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

duh british are coming (hold your nose)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 20 October 2003 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

you brush your tongue with your toothbrush. duh. brits. . .

*laughs* Exactly! Plus, it really helps if you have toothpaste on that toothbrush when you brush your tongue, I have noticed. I never brush my teeth without also brushing my tongue; I like the clean breath it leaves me with, and I like that I've never had a problem with plaque because of this.

i also follow up listerine. fantastic.

I do something similar -- I pop one or two of those PocketPaks into my mouth and let them do their business. I love having minty breath for the whole of the morning!

one or two whole pocketpaks?!!! this remonds me of when i was bored at work and decoded to see how much mint i could take before i cried. did half a pocketpak, 4 altoids, 6 smints and 4 pieces of wrigley's extra gum in one mouthful

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 20 October 2003 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice one Dave :) I am thinking of getting on the listerine bandwagon due to a perpetually inflamed bit of gum (where two teeth are precisely the right distance apart to get every foodstuff under the sun caught between them).

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 20 October 2003 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

this week i have been mostly eating Bonjela

stevem (blueski), Monday, 20 October 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmmm Have you ever tried anbesol? it's like an oral antiseptic/anaestetic. It's great for ulcers.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 20 October 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i assume it's nothing like anusol

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 20 October 2003 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, i would hope not. But i knew someone would ask!

Ooh, I'll have to try that (the whole mint challenge), but nope, not the whole package, just one or two of those little strip thingies. (I don't know what they're called, really.) I do go through two whole packages in a week, though. Some people smoke after eating -- I pop minty little squares into my mouth after eating.

Sorry for the mixup, and once again, I'll have to try that challenge!

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 20 October 2003 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it hurst and makes you unable to type properly

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 20 October 2003 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)
