What Video Games Are You Playing Right Now? (Vol. 1)

This is the general-purpose thread about games you've been wasting your life away with lately.

Having purchased me a GameCube two weeks ago(they're down to US$99!), i've spent a lot of my time with it. Metroid Prime, Zelda, and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem(a rare good Lovecraft game).

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000095ZHA.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpgJust rented the new Simpsons: Hit & Run last night, which is essentially their version of Grand Theft Auto, only minus the uzis & the drug-running. And the fun part? It doesn't suck! Imagine that!

So, what you been playin'?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

and why do all movie/tv-licensed games suck the biggus dickus?(with the exception of Goldeneye on the N64)

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Having also bought a cheap GC I've been playing Zelda: Wind Waker, Zelda: Ocarina, and a smidgen of Super Monkey Ball.

On the GBA I'm playing Pokemon Ruby, I'd guess I'm about a third of the way through that.way of listening to new music too.

On the PC pretty much all I play is Civ 2, and that not properly for a while - I keep starting games and then never getting back to them and when I do I can't remember what I was trying to do.

On the PS2 I never seem to finish games - I have an ongoing game of LMA Manager 2002 though that I'm keen to return to, it's quite therapeutic and it's also a great

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a Gamecube and Metroid Prime in the summer. I'm all the way to fighting Metroid Prime, but haven't picked it up in a month. I want to get another game, but I feel that I have unfinished business that must be taken care of first.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I just finished my 6th season of Madden 2004. 6 straight Super Bowl wins. I bought NHL 2004 last week and my PS2 doesn't like it, it won't load the game. So I haven't played it yet. Thats it. I don't own any games besides those two.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

what stops you from beating a game? How long will you go before picking up again? will you beat it then?

i picked up Thiefs I & II in the summer, still unbeaten.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Part of my post got moved to another part of my post somehow.

I have a low patience threshold with games Kingfish - I'm not prepared to be frustrated for more than about half and hour before I put the thing down. Then it might be a while before I try again depending on how intractable the problem seems to be.

I don't actually think I've ever 'finished' a game. With football management games I've won everything there is to win in a single season though at which point I usually look for a different club to manage or start again.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I've finished Civ obviously. But never on the hardest level. I'm a quitter and proud of it!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I never have problems beating the sports games. Strategy games and adventure games drive me nuts. I have no patience and usually throw the controller when I get frustrated(which is often) so then I have no controller to use. WHich means, I don't get to play until I buy a new controller. So I never end up finishing games.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I only really play GBA now, and a few weeks ago I finished Zelda: Link to the Past (having missed it during my first childhood), which was a long and satisfying endeavor. Now I'm mucking around on Wario Ware until Super Mario 3 Advance or whatever they're calling it comes out, although it just occured to me that I should get that Metroid game for GBA.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Got a Gameboy Advance SP Turbo 2000 or whatthehellever a couple months ago, to kill time during slow stretches on campus. I played the hell out of Metroid Fusion for a while, but I'm stuck on this damn part where I need to shot these hatches open and blow shit up and run away, freezing SA-X every couple seconds to keep from dying.

Lately, playing Pokemon Sapphire. My one guy who can beat just about anyone keeps using up all his PP before I get past the Elite Four, which means I get my ass kicked cause I don't have any PP-restoring thingies.

(Please don't read the last sentence out loud.)

The girlfriend's hooked on Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 right now, and I'm awaiting the GBA release of The Sims! (And the Mario/Luigi RPG). Also hoping for more N64 ports, since I've never played any of those games. Maybe Super Mario Advance 5 will be Mario 64, that'd rock.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i beat the meta ridley! hurrah. had one go at metroid prime and got about 2/3 through the first incarnation (I know there's BOUND to be a second). Reckon I have to get a cheat list of all the missile/weap upgrades and go scour the map before going back.

If I can be bothered.

Looking fwd to Warioland. When's the new Rogue Leader out?

Alan (Alan), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Super Mario Advance 5 will be Mario 64, that'd rock

Would that be possible? I thought the GBA was basically a little tiny Super Nintendo.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

On the PS2 Im still working my way through GTA3, Im kinda fustrated by the bank robbery and have been giving it a break finally. In Fifa World Tour 2003 or 2002 I forget, Im guiding Ajax to league and cup wins and have saved right before a big game with Rotterdam. After that I still need Italian and Belgium league and cups victorys. I just got bored with Final Fantasy X right after fighting my way in Zanarkand so I've put that one down for a bit. I'm also bored with Gt-A since I have very few tours to win and one of them involves driving a Zonda for 20 odd laps. Im also nearing the end of Neverwinter Nights or whatever its called, I finished it on Hard, ran through the guantlet and now am almost finished the Super Hard level that was unlocked. And despite not actually liking Zone of The Enders Im almost done that game but found no challenge or reason to continue.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

quake 2, dungeon keeper.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Rebel Strike hits before the end of the year. They already have a demo of it running at Best Buy & the big box stores of the like.

I got the GC/GBA game adapter, and am thinking of getting some GBA games now. it IS a bit cheap that you need a GBA to access certain parts of games like Zelda or Metroid...

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Mainly just Ape Escape 2 these days, with occasional relapses into GTA Vice City or Tony Hawk 4. Am eagerly awaiting Jak II and THUG this month. I need to get back into Sims, I never really played it much.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Would that be possible? I thought the GBA was basically a little tiny Super Nintendo.

I'm not sure -- come to think of it, I don't know anything about the specs for the GBA. If it's really only the equivalent of a Super Nintendo, though, they're pretty efficient -- the graphics and smoothness on some of the games is better than some of the early PlayStation games I have (only some, of course). Hmm. It would still probably be trickier to bring it over ... but cheaper than a new game from scratch, and the Mario series sells well enough maybe they'll do it anyway. I hope :)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm old school. Former roomate left an Atari 7200!?!?! 2600 version of Berzerk and Q-Bert 4-everah!!

souledamerican (souledamerican), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently, the GBA has better graphics hardware than the Playstation ever did.

however, having a screen that's only about 1/7th the size of a usual TV does cut down on the allowable detail in a game.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

apart from still replaying the GTA games on ps2, I am currently getting very sweaty and frustrated at the Midnight club2 game. Still manage to cram in the odd race on NFS hot pursuit2 though.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

fucking dungeon keeper rocks pashmina; I'll never get tired of it.

Have you guys seen this?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god, that article is brilliant

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

My main vice is Desert Combat, a mod for Battlefield 1942. It's juvenile antics with their tanks and their bombs and their bombs and their gonz, and as such stress relief par excellence.

Civ 3's on the go every now and again, occasinally a bit of multiplay with Celeste, which is fun.

Champ Man game with made-up players is now over, my save game has gone wierd, but I'd won the Champions League so thats that really. Never again will I know the joy of Lawson hitting a 50yrd through ball for Vecera to pounce on and score.

I'm not really looking at anything coming up soon, my PC can't handle the next generation of games, and I'm really glad about that. Too much time wasted as it is.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That truly is a wonderful link, thanks Teeny!

I love this quote from one of those kids: "Donkey Kong's mouth is made of pluses. Look: Plus, plus, plus, minus. They're trying to teach you math by brainwashing you."

Kids really do say the darndest things.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, actually I'm a little reluctant to buy Metroid Fusion because I know I'll have to play it until it's over (although I did give up on Advance Wars 2), and I've been enjoying getting so much reading done in my evenings lately...

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Good plan :) My reading plummetted when I started playing Metroid Fusion; I went from three or four novels a week to one on weekends if there wasn't a Red Sox game on.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i cant believe those kids picked up on the space invaders being based on sea creatures. it took me 15 years to figure that out!

joni, Friday, 17 October 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ho-lee fuck, i never thought of that.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

me neither! is that for real? I mean, they're really just dots with dangly bits.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm on my third season of NFL2K3. The best thing about sports games is that once the newest version comes out, last year's title gets severely reduced. I got it for 9.99 at Virgin Megastore. Anyhow, I'm the Bears, and after 2 losing seasons, I traded away Jim Miller, most of my secondary, Marcus Robinson, and most of my draft picks to get Dante Culpepper, and upgraded my WR's and secondary. And now I'm 6-0! Yay!

But I also have Dark Cloud 2 that I'm borrowing from my friend, and Medal of Honor for the Mac. Has anyone played those two?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

http://spaceinvaders.retrogames.com/ani-invader.gif

teeny (teeny), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing console-wise - only Golden Sun and its sequel on the GBA. Am much looking forward to the next couple months for new Tony Hawk, new Final Fantasy, and new Mario Kart (CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS ONE!).

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to really like the Final Fantasy series on the SNES - FF6 [err, FF3 I guess] was the absolute best, but FF7 on the PS sucked so badly that I haven't tried any of them since. Am I missing anything good?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I just remembered - I'm also playing a remake of the excellent 80's classic Head over Heels. You can, and must, get it from here:-

http://retrospec.sgn.net/games/hoh/

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Dark Cloud 2 is fun, since you can continually level up your characters & get cooler shit.

also, one you get the robot, you can cruise around in stylee. All games should have missle racks in wooden crates.

all games should have action sequences ontop of a train.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

phil - I'd definitely recommend Final Fantasy X, which moves as fast as the SNES games. One thing I hated about the Playstation FFs were how cumbersome and lengthy the battles were. I think FFX even recently came down in price.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I had been playing an emulated Top Gear 2, but boy that got old fast. I need some new ROMs.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

If you didn't like FF7 (and it's one of my favorite games evah), you probably won't like the subsequent ones, although FF9 is pretty retro and I can't really speak to the PS2 ones.

God, it would be so great if they would put out some of the SNES Final Fantasy games for GBA.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked FF8 better than 7. Stats as directly proportional to your spells is bogue.

Dark Cloud 2: any RPG that lets you golf AND fish is classick.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If they do what Jordan suggests I can kiss those 15-20 minutes of actual productivity I squeeze in at "work" everyday between interweb adventures goodbye.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

(I like Teeny's link too, but some of those quotes are highly suspect.)

bnw (bnw), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that EGM article deserves its own thread. today's youth are a bitchey, smartassed lot.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

To answer the thread: Warcraft 3 on thee iMac. Tragically my weak ass prcoessor makes Neverwinter Nights virtually unplayable. And I have been neglecting my ps 2 for months.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

xp:

"It's Zeus. He's taking you away to the Acropolis."

bnw has a point.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm. that's possible, tho. thank to my english teacher parents, i was reading books of greek myth when i was in junior high...

note: yes,i know--my scholarly research made me the COOLEST BOY IN SCHOOL. I could lead my school team to victory; take my exams & pass the lot, etc.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 17 October 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I alternate between:

VICE CITY (PS2) which has been on loan from my friend for the past 6 months and I'm only 18% complete (I have the Vercetti mansion but I'm stuck on the mission where you have to bust all the windows in the mall shops)

and

EA All Star Baseball 2003 (PS2) - last night I played the red sox versus the yankees 2 games of a best of 7 and I won the first game (Pedro) 2-0 and lost the second game (Wakefield) 5-3.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Whenever I play GTA/Vice City I get too carried away to actually accomplish anything, I just go on total anarchy killing/blowing-up/driving-things-off-of/into-other-things sprees until I'm shooting police helicopters out of the sky with rocket launchers and all that.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I get too carried away to actually accomplish anything,

That ^^

does not match up with this:

I just go on total anarchy killing/blowing-up/driving-things-off-of/into-other-things sprees until I'm shooting police helicopters out of the sky with rocket launchers and all that.

Unless you mean you're too busy blowing things up to run over pedestrians? :)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, we launch buses off the ramps, and try to get them to roll in mid-air

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Can anyone recommend a kindofa cutesy but addictive game for the PS2? Must be super-colorful.

ALSO: Ape Escape 2! (or Ape Escape 1 for PS1)

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's played Wario Ware for GC? That game is the crack.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm playing "mortyr", which is this 1st person shooter set in 1944 naz! germany with a time machine. I got it cheap, used. It has fancy graphics(one level is set in a cathedral w/light shining diagonally thru the windows, and the lever reflected very cleverly in the highly-polished floor) but the gameplay is strictly DOOM2 level. It's kind of lame really, but fun. It was worth a fiver, though. The best bit is this level set in a castle, w/an enormous zeppelin flying overhead.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

whsmith in hammersmith just had tron 2.0 for the pc for a fiver and i've been through the training bits but didn't want to get too far into it before installing the 50M patch (because it obsoletes old saved games and i'd just have to start again). looks nice from what i've seen of it. and it's funny to think how i'm getting ~= 50fps when the original cray was doing 600spf 8)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i was playing ninja gaiden till ithad to be returned to the video store. it's really badass.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw psrt of an ad for a futuristic western type of game for PS2, anyeon know what it might be? also, are any of the indiana jones games any good?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 June 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so going to the store to pick up the Exp Pack for Diablo II, even tho i know i could probably better spend $20 on something else.

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Thursday, 3 June 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, i finally got a copy of SW:Knights of the Old Republic from some ebay dude. Great game.

Currently, I'm using the bald asian dude with a bad-ass fu manchu, named "Beavis Azz'Monch"

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Friday, 11 June 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

'hitman: contracts.' wow.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 19 June 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm finding it quite hard.

I have also been back on halo. working through it on the hardest difficulty.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 19 June 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone else played it?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 19 June 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still on Halo (I think I must be nearly done by now), and then I'm going to pick up my stalled game of Hitman 2. I've heard the new one is ace though.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 19 June 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally finished Hitman 2 and I loved it, even though the ending monologue was excruciatingly lame. I'd love to play Contracts, but they don't have it for GameCube so the hell with it. I will continue Tony Hawking.

Also Dan I will happily take you to school in Soul Caliber II whenever we're in the same neighborhood. BRING THE PAIN

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Index are doing Gamecubes and Gameboy things for £40 at the moment, so I cracked and picked up my first console since a NES. Picked up Zelda, Tony Hawks 4 and Metroid for a tenner each secondhand as well, seems pretty sweet so far, Zelda is soooo cute.

MattR, Sunday, 20 June 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm playing Chrono Trigger now and doing that mimic game in the beginning -- how do I know if I got the clone correctly?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Just got an S ranking in Resident Evil Zero and the full 120 shines in Super Mario Sunshine over the weekend. RE0 is a great game, SMS still isn't.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 20 June 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

We gave Cathy a lesson in Mario Party last night. And she won! Pah.

Leefuse, run back to Chrono's house after winning the game that costs 80 silver points and the clone should be in his bedroom.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 20 June 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i am now playing Star Wars: KotOR using the Dark Side. some of the interactions are funnier, however, most of the dialogue choices make the dark side way too much of a petty thug. not enough subtle power-grabbing.

Kingfish of Burma (Kingfish), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread to see if it's been mentionned yet, but is shellshock nam 67 on PS2 supposed to be good ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 21 June 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, this last bit in Halo where you have to blow up the reactor shafts or whatever is hard.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I started playing Planescape: Torment again yesterday. This game is really ugly now, but WOW the dialogue!!!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally stuck on Aftershock, right at the blimmin start. I have removed the ceiling panel from the nearby lift by standing on the chair but I'm totally flumoxed as to what to do next. Throwing the pen or the radio down the stairs doesn't seem to work.

Anyone any ideas?

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 21 June 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

ah so it's: "Climb out of lift",
I was trying all the wrong key words like "up", "jump", "climb up", "grab ceiling and pull self up", "go though hole in ceiling where panel used to be", "examine pen", "hurl pen", "write with pen 'i fuck arses' on wall"

Thanks anyway guys!
(Should I continue carrying the pen when I'm out of the building, or will it slow me down?)

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Conflict: Desert Storm 2 on the pS2. Took just under 6 months for me and my mate to complete C:DS, and this one's even better.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 21 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't find that recent SNES thread so I'll just ask it here: why is Chrono Trigger called (one of) the best RPG ever? I admit I'm addicted to it right now, but that's sort of par for every well-done RPG I've played.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

WarioWare (the GBA version) is still stealing many of my moments, and I am still not able to get past the last stage. Reflexes games are not meant for my age group, I think.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The time travel! Robots vs. Cave Women.

I am getting pretty excited about halo 2, right now.

Leeefuse, what about Chrono Trigger do you not really like? When I played it recently I noted how my perspective has changed with the passage of time, so that 16-bit RPGs have come to resemble each other where before their differences seemed more important. The standard it was judged against at the time was Final Fantasy III. Most people seemed to prefer that game, but I always thought that CT had better graphics (cleaner, and sort've more iconic), better music (Zeal Island theme!), better character design (none of the characters in super NES final fantasy games stood out at all), and a better story. One really important thing was that the screen didn't change when you got into a fight (while in FF your characters basically fought drawings), and there were no random fights! That was huge for me; I hated walking around the world map in FF games and getting pulled into random battles.

I think if you're not that far along in it you should keep playing; I'd be willing to bet you'll end up liking it more and more as you go along with more comrades and more techniques (those are really well done too; impressive without being annoying time-consuming mini-movies like some of the more advanced spells in FFVII).

My god I'm such a geek! Really, I wouldn't have this much to say about it if I hadn't just been playing it myself. I might go back and keep playing; there are like 10 endings.

I didn't say that I disliked it! I meant only that so far (I'm a little past where you first reach the End of Time place) there hasn't been anything notably memorable that sets it apart from other RPGs that I've played to warrant its "best ever" stature.

I think Mario RPG may be my favorite RPG!

That is a bold statement.

Maybe I should've said that it was properly the first RPG I'd played and I haven't picked it up since I was 14(?).

Dan OTM, the no-random-encounters thing is huge.

I just finished Halo like two minutes ago, so that's one monkey off my back. I have to admit the race out of the exploding ship at the end is pretty exciting. I stopped to blow up those banshees so I reached the escape ship with like .2 seconds left, it was sweet.
