luckily the other 7 show up when attached to the computer although would prefer it the player itself would show them or play them

I know there's an answer

I just hope that answer doesn't include the word 'firmware'

I just got a Sandisk clip jam after the clip broke off my (still working after 3 + half years) clip zip. It is more like the clip+, reverting to the smaller LED old school style display. I am probably insane, but I genuinely think this is design perfection.

there's a Sport as well which retains the colour screen.

the rockbox people aren't happy with the new models - the newer chipset isn't supported. i've also read reports that the two repositories, the internal and external memory, are treated separately.

I don't even know what rockbox is but have have always felt genuine empathy with rockbox people as they are a constant bulwark against ipod.

(Reading a bit more, the only reference i can find to the internal and external memory being separate seems to be when mounting the device on a PC, which is true for my clip zip as well. Shuffle still treats the internal and external memory as one big collection though)

Yeah I just noticed that, hopefully if enough people moan about it there will be a firmware update forthcoming.

Am sure this isn't the most recent thread.

Anyway ... any recommendations for an MP3 player in 2024? I've always liked my Fiio but not certain they do anything affordable these days ...

I'm into the newer Sony Walkmans that of course play MP3 but also Flac and high rez lossless and stuff like DSD.

I had a NW-A35 ($200) for the last 8 years, never gave me any trouble. Obviously the battery declined a bit but never had a problem getting 4-6 hours of play out of it on a walk. It used a custom Sony OS, the touch screen was kind of laughably bad by todays standards (felt like a 1998 ATM machine), but whatever. When plugged into a mac it showed up as 2 external HDs, though it used a very funky unusual power/data cable though and a couple times I had to order another one. Most importantly it sounded excellent, usually used Sennheiser HD-1, nothing incredibly special.

So after 8 years I was thinking I'd probably need to replace soon, wound up losing it in an Uber, thats fine, had a good run. Wound up getting a newer model, NW-A306, which sadly, is worse in almost every way. Now $300 (I've seen it and missed it at $250 though) and using a version of Android, which I can't stand- why do I have to make/use an account on this kind of thing? For about 2 seconds I was like huh, well maybe if there's some android-only app I want to try.... no fucking way, it's so sluggish with all the Google cruft, just using it as intended can be frustrating, throwing up cryptic android error messages and shit. So even though its a much better processor/screen it's almost undone by the repurposed OS. Mac OS won't support an Android device directly plugged in at all, so for file transfer you have to use a semi-clunky third party app (alternatively, you can put music directly on a SD card at least). It's volume limited, apparently to some EU standard, which really cuts the max level (and doesn't take into account headphone impedence, so some headphones are really unusable with this). I usually listen to it at 90-100% and it's... fine, but eventually I'm sure I'll want more gain for something. 2 or 3 improvements: Uses standard USB-C. Can stream hi res wirelessly to bluetooth headphones (I have a sony pair actually, but haven't tried this). The one thing I really love about it is theres a retro screensaver that shows one of various vintage Sony blank cassettes depending on the file type you're listening to. It's a comfy, cute thing especially paired with the Koss Porta Pros I've been checking out (they sound really good for $35 or so and if you had them in the 80s you might find them nostalgically pleasing).

I really needed something to play high res files and DSD and stuff, and I really got attached to my old walkman. So I don't regret it, but Apple Music also streams a lot of high res stuff, AND allows me to add my own files to stream, so I usually wind up just using my phone. I used to be a real brat about having to use a dongle for real headphones, but having learned to love wireless noise cancelling headphones I'm less of a nerd about it.

I dropped my NWA 35 in the pool and it’s been a little glitchy ever since. Realized that they don’t make them anymore and started sweating. I love this player and do not want a different one.

You can find Japanese versions for a good price on Ebay. I used my old player to compare to the Japanese one to get all of the settings the way I want them, now I’m good to go. I feel like I should buy ten of them to last the rest of my days.

It really is a nice little player with just want you want, nothing you don't. I realize there's probably people who would take advantage of Spotify etc on the newer model though (surprisingly theres an Apple Music app for Android, can't really recommend, at least on the Sony).

I have an NWA45 that I bought in 2018 and an NWA55 that I ordered from Japan on eBay when the 45 was behaving poorly. As soon as the 55 arrived, the 45 shaped up, though, so now I kinda switch back and forth between them. I think the 45 might be a little louder, but either way I mostly use them in the car now as opposed to walking around, which was what I used them for until early 2023 (there's no place to walk with headphones where I live now, except maybe hiking in the forest).

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 17 December 2024 04:25 (one year ago)

It's volume limited, apparently to some EU standard

there's probably a way to change the firmware to a non-EU one yeah?
