Y'know, not to be a fun h@t@ and all that, but I can, like, see the basic flaw in a traditional festival that says it's ok for young children to throw explosives around for their own amusement. Plus, it seems to stretch out a little longer each passing year, doesn't it?

huh?

Yes, I'd take all the fireworks out of their little hands - give them copies of "La Nausée" or "l'etranger" haha.

What fireworks celebrations are there?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 18 October 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Fireworks = Novemeber 5th (Gun Powder Plot)

and late October is Diwali which also means a lot of fireworks.

Bah. Humbug.

Also bear in mind Bonfire Night is a night gleefully celebrating the execution of a group of old-skool would-be-terrorists protesting against religious oppression with barely a fair trial in sight - very dubious in the times of Bush's America, and argh stop where are you taking me?!!

But hey, pretty colours! Ooooh... Blackheath's huge annual fireworks display = rockingest thing ever.

My gran always said that we should really be burning dummies of the man who was king at the time of Guy Fawkes' life (James I, but history wasn't her strong point so she usually settled for Henry VIII).

One of HSA's friends was trying to convince us to go to the Lewes "fireworks". Apparently, this isn't even proper fireworks (and I hate fireworks anyway) but the villagers run around setting things on fire and shouting about Popery.

As interesting an experience as it sounded, I declined.

I've been to the Lewes fireworks! They burn a gigantic Pope every year, although they'll be buggered if he dies in the next few weeks and they're left with a huge model of a dead Pope and nothing to do with it.

Nothing beats Ottery St Mary in Devon for Bonfire Night mentalism though... HUGE FLAMING BARRELS OF TAR!

HSA showed me his snapshots from the last Lewes Fireworks that he went to, and honestly, it looked like a cross between a riot and a KKK rally.

Well, you know, Guido was an agent of an enemy power...
