ROAD WARRIOR HAWK PASSES AWAY

by Georgiann Makropoulos Updated: 10/19/2003 1:03:22 PM

It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you that Hawk of the Road Warriors has passed away in his sleep at 1:30 this morning.

Hawk was born on January 26th, not sure of the year but I believe he turned 46 years old. His real name was Michael Hegstrand.

Mike had everything going for him right now.

He just sold his Condo to move today into his new home in Tampa, Florida. His wife Dale said "he was going to lay down for a while, he didn't feel well." She thought it was from all the packing and excitement of the move into their new home.

As soon as I find out further details I will post them here for you.

I want to convey my deepest sympathy and condolences to Dale and Mike's family, friends and fans. This one has really hit home hard. I am totally at a loss for words.

If anyone would like to send a note to Dale, please e-mail them to me and I will see that she receives them. I don't even have the new address yet, so this is the easiest way.

Hawk and Animal were perhaps one of the most successful and feared Tag Teams ever on the wrestling scene. Joseph Laurinaitis (Animal) is totally devastated. We should hear from him soon.

They were first known as the Legion of Doom. Those spiked shoulder pads were so intimidating.

In Chicago, they just celebrated their 20th Anniversary on June 7th @ the Pro Championship Wrestling show, where they were reunited with Paul Ellering.

And it's official, The Road Warriors were just voted the Dream Team by the fans of the WWE RAW Magazine Poll. The Magazine is now on the Newsstands, it is the November issue.

It is a very sad day, today.

Shame the guy who typed it up is a complete muppet, but still. The most over tag team in pro-wrestling history, without a doubt, and damn decent workers up until about 1991. Nothing to write home about in recent years, but during their prime...

My friend Chris and I used to pretend we were the Road Warriors when we were in high school, the impression consisting mostly of one of us slapping the other on the chest when the other was speaking saying "TELL 'EM HAWK" or "TELL 'EM ANIMAL". I was Hawk because I was taller than Chris. I guess I'm dead now.

They were my favourite ever tag team - I'll never forget watching them.

was it steroids? How many pro wrestlers does vince and others of his ilk have on their conscience?

heh. something tells me we're gunna find out within the next 10 years.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

That would involve Vince McMahon having a conscience.

Did anyone see the episode of HBO real sports which covered this epidemic of early wrestling deaths? Roddy Piper made some compelling comments in the piece that recently got him fired from the WWE. Vince McMahon tries to physically intimidate his interviewer. Things keep looking worse and worse for the WWE. The combination of these drug related deaths and the decline in entertainment quality of the WWE programs make it appear as if wrestling itself is doomed.

enh. it'll come back. always has, always will.

Cyclical nature of the business. It only takes one big idea to turn a wrestling company around (Hulkamania, NWO, Austin 3:16).

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Right. The wwf has come in and out of slumps before though the frequency of wrestler deaths is definitely going to hurt the future of the business. As far as the cyclical nature of the business goes, I kind of wish that Mcmahon would do something completely radical with the organization, perhaps push some new wrestlers, give it an enirely new face.

well, does her cosmetic surgery count as "pushing a new face"?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a different bodypart other than "face", Kingy.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i know, but i thought this joke was funnier.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, fair point. The only guy that can save WWE now is Chilly Willy, obviously.

Just out of interest, how come Shawn Michaels' training camp graduates (Spanky, American Dragon.... errr, the other ones) don't get a fast track to WWE stardom as some kind of Kliq 2K3 situation?
