Your friend technology

I had to buy a new CD/MP3CDR disc player yesterday and settled on a model charmingly called the "cd-yepp" from Samsung. Seems like a handy thing, but whenever I turn it off the LCD display says "Good-bye", which baffles me. Is there any value in giving electronic devices and other technological doohickeys pally-pal attributes and programming that "wishes" you a nice day or says hello? Or am I just noticing this because I haven't been hanging out with actual live people lately as much as I'd like?

A guy at school had one of the first discmans with anti-skipping technology which displayed 'Sorry' when it eventually did skip.

when you can't program your VCR properly, it should tell you it doesn't matter because you're really good in bed.

Ah, to have the power to make machines apologize to you

My Korg DS8 says 'Welcome to Synthworld!' when I turn it on.

Sometimes if I let my car get too dirty, it says "Wash Me!" across the hood. I have no idea how they got it to do this but it's cool.

TOMBOT, Monday, 20 October 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

My microwave tells me to ENJOY YOUR MEAL every time I use it. Even if I just defrosted some raw steak for the cat it says ENJOY YOUR MEAL, I think it's trying to poison me :-/

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 October 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My phone does the "goodbye" thing, of course, with this sort of low-key happy-go-lucky power-down noise. Since that noise is unaffected by volume/mute settings, and is the only aesthetic dealie you can't modify, I think it's the phone's way of mocking me or kicking me in the shins. Cause nine times out of ten, when you're turning your phone off, why are you doing it? Because you're in a movie theater/classroom/opera hall/secret nook next to the confessional, and you're trying to not make noise.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 20 October 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That Enjoy Your Meal thing is hysterical.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 20 October 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

:D

It also says WELCOME TO WORD PROMPTING if I unplug it then plug it back in. I'm scared to use WORD PROMPTING in case I go to reheat a cup of coffee and it says NO YOU FULE IT WILL TASTE STEWED MAKE A NEW DAMN CUP.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 October 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a similar phone, Tep. If you really don't wanna make any noise, you could leave it on but set it to vibrate. Or do you have an 'airplane' mode on yours? I think that stops all incoming calls.

oops (Oops), Monday, 20 October 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a damn radio that says "sorry" when shitty music comes on.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 20 October 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm. I'll have to look for the airplane mode thing. I'm still figuring out how this sucker works, and the only reason I'm able to take photos is there's a big button with a drawing of a camera on it and you just keep pressing it :)

I don't know; Trayce's posts in this thread have all been beyond classic. Thank you, chickadee.

Amen, Stevem. Should pool our resources, and drive the prices down.

I want a damn radio that says "sorry" when shitty music comes on.

Exactly why they created Digital Radio

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 20 October 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

iPod. Hm. $500, but it holds 40 GB? Damn, that's a tough one. Wait, no it's not: I am disc-player-dropping-prone. Fuck no.

Also, if I had a microwave that told me to ENJOY YOUR MEAL after I nuke the last half-palatable frozen chicken-wads-'n'-noodles dinner I have before three days of desperate grilled-cheese-eating grocery-trip anticipation, I would cry myself to sleep.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 20 October 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)
