duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Monday, 20 October 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i will be in (a) tulse hill/brixton (b) maybe russell sq. (c) record shops maybe (d) where the action is

duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Monday, 20 October 2003 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

a FAP around russell sq maybe (will someone nominate a pub please)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 20 October 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ack! Russell Sq. is my manor! The Swan on Cosmo Place is my fave local pub. (Though it's a bit small for a FAP, it does have the requisite stinky beers.) Perhaps we can persuade Pete to open SOAS for us?

kate (kate), Monday, 20 October 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i heard it's legal to smoke pot in there!

duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Monday, 20 October 2003 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

or , no wait, i might be thinking of amsterdam

duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Monday, 20 October 2003 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

You're thinking of Suzy's manor, the Duke of York!

kate (kate), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ok tho cool cause my pal cameron works round there so i will hang out round there & see where we end up, that's my plan so far

duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yay more ruin

stevem (blueski), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I can do the 23rd possibly.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I nominate Thursday for Secretary-General of duane's good fappinghood.

At the Swan?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, shit. WEDNESDAY. Wednesday the 22nd.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ok solid!
i think.
i get into town that day, i part co. with my mother at kings cross station, i hang around vaguely that sorta area until cameron gets off work (i know how to find r. sq. from k's x but that's about all i know) & find him, ...etc. what can possibly go wrong? if i don't show up : call the police.

duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll definitely be there, except a) I'm unsure whether we are going for SOAS (is that even an option for a FAP?) or the Swan, and b) I don't know where the Swan is.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 20 October 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

russell square, apparently

duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Monday, 20 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, what day is this FAP? Tomorrow, Wednesday i.e., the 22nd?

The Swan is in Cosmo Place - you walk down the East Side of Southampton Row from Russel Square, and it's a little alleyway on the left leading to Queens Square. The Swan is the first on the left pub that's not a hotel bar. (If it's too crowded, we may have to go to the Queens Larder.) I would search for a FAP entry for it, but my internet access is filtered again. Sigh.

I probably won't be there until about 7.30 because I will be watching Nigel Spivey presenting Heroes Of World War II across the road. (Unfortunately, on the television, not live in my flat.)

Anyone? Anyone else coming?

kate (kate), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I will come along if I feel well enough. This weekend proved taxing.

Tha Swan was the site of a pre-ILx protoFAP, funnily enough, involving a cast including Ewing, Baran, The Nipper, Carmody and our recently departed friend Raggett.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

How strange! It is my local now. (Pete keeps inviting us to SOAS but HSA is scared.)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Wednesday night is the SOAS Quiz too. (It is most definately illegal to smoke pot in SOAS bar however). We only stay open until 8:30 so you would have to move on after (and I will have to move on elsewhere anyway), but certainly feel free to come down while you can. ILx rules amy or may not apply on the quiz. HSA is howver right to be scared.

I believe the Swan has been advertising a Friday Night Music Quiz for a while which may demand our attention.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that's an idea. Those of you that are not into watching Horny Historians Of WWII can go participate in the SOAS Quiz, and then we'll all meet up after at The Swan.

(HSA did, however, appreciate the exhibition of mud architecture in the SOAS gallery recently.)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

AT least someone goes to the gallery, none of our students ever do.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to come, but as usual, I wont be coming. (stop cheering you lot!)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i will be there, apparently (if i can get out of moving a bunch of musical equipment)

cameron, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

cameron can you make roddy & bad al come along too?

duane, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall pop along early doors! (And maybe stay til l ate doors WHO KNOW!) Calm yore excitement!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

If there is a move to have a crack at the SOAS quiz first (what time would that be, Pete?) I might well be up for that, but unless I hear otherwise I will go to the Swan, arriving 6ish. I believe there is a history of an ILX team (sort of) in that quiz already, so I suspect this may be an unwelcome notion.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ok duane, i have managed to postpone shifting said hernia-inducing musical equipment, so i am definitely up for it. i think bad al maybe has to work, but i'll see if i can get roddy along.

cameron, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I make a great suggestion? You London lot should have a meet up sometime at the new installation in the Tate Modern's turbine gallery. You probably won't be able to get away with smoking, drinking or lighting flares but in most other respects it will resemble lying about at 4am in the stone circle at Glastonbury.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I'll be coming, having been weakened by food poisoning/ stomach upset over the last two days. I feel horrible.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i might come, but i think i'll probably opt for a cremaster and then sleep. but we'll see.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I'll head to the Swan abt 8ish then

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

You cremaster fool Toby. (I don't think I have the organisational skills and the stamina).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sure i have either, pete. but i'm determined to make it to at least one, and i'm going to be over at king's until 5:30, and there's one showing at the other cinema at 6, so...

is it just me or is this pub not on fancyapint?! it's this one, right?

http://www.professorharbottle.co.uk/pub/londonwestend/swan.html

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't tell, blocked cause it's "ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO" - like half the people in this hospital didn't get here because of alcohol and tobacco. Sigh.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you may be right. Odd considering how close the Queen's Larder is to it (it twenty yards).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

there's no FAP entry for this pub aargh!!!

but its russell sq tube but can someone tell me the name of the street plz.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ok i'm gonna get to london early this pm & i might go to that thing nick said cause i am interested to look at the turbine rm & last time i was there it was closed. i will see you all a bit later i hope.

duane, Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

How many times do I have to say "Cosmo Place" ???

It's directly across Southampton Row from my flock of bats.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

haha sorry.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

'bats'

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, it's Halloween, it brings out the goff in me. ;-)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

duane i def can't be there tonight, but am up for stuff tomorrow afternoon or eve if not too sybaritic: anyone else?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So what time does it look like people are getting there?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Cosmo Place, between Southampton Row and Queen's Square.

http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?GridE=530367&GridN=181926&client=public&X=530367&Y=181926&place=Cosmo+Place,+London&db=GB&local=&type=&start=&coordsys=gb&limit=&overviewmap=&scale=5000

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we think it's a place that will indulge me in a hot port?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

is that a v.posh lancashire stew w.potatoes on top, starry?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i seem to recall having great difficulty getting a shandy in there* a few months back, so a hot port will probably be far too taxing.

*it was a lunchtime, i think the person behind the bar was new (to both bars and the country)

i cannot join you this evening as there is ROCK in hammersmith (unless it gets cancelled, but it's looking OK at the mo)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes Mark!! It is usually served in shots for the more 'hardkore'.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i've just realised that i was in this pub a couple of weeks ago! it's ok, a few bitters if i remember rightly. the food looked rub though.

i'm getting more tempted to come along early and skip cremaster cos it's only going to be 10 mins walk from my lecture to the pub. hmmm.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

so who else is coming and who's going to be there early (like, 6ish)? i'm now pretty sure i'm going to come but am hmming and haaing about the cinema first.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm tempted to pop down an' all - the hot port beckons

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm probably going to be by about 7.30 or 8, depending on what time the Horny Historian is on. Though I suppose, seeing as it is across the road, there is nothing stopping me stopping by for a quick pint in between!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't be making it to the Swan. Otherwise engaged in phase two of the evening. Phase one I am working.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be there before 6. Does this pub have football showing? There are two very appealing Champions' League matches tonight.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably not, not really a football pub. Next door is a ropey Sports Bar though.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

oh gawd yes i must watch Rangers v Man U, hmmm

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, if they had a television in the bar, we'd be watching THE HORNY HISTORIAN and not footie anyway.

Alas, it's on at 7.30:

Time - 19:30 - 20:00 (30 minutes long)
When - Wednesday 22nd October on Five
The Man Who Hoodwinked Hitler.
How could one dead man save the lives of thousands of Allied soldiers? Ewen Montagu knew how and devised a cunning deception where the body of a dead officer was washed ashore in Spain with false information about Allied landings in the Mediterranean. Hitler took the bait and was poorly prepared for the Allied invasion of Italy. Featuring exclusive new information on the identity of the officer's body.
(Subtitles, Stereo)

Either I will have to come down early and take a quick break, or else I will have to get HSA to tape it.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I am starting to feel rather snot filled now and the thought of going home and sniffling into hot whisky sounds rather good... we'll see.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, I'm leaving work right about now-ish. I'll resolve my Horny Historian dilemma, and then proceed to the Swan. See some of youse later.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Only just seen this - no drinking for me tonight though, I have a presentation tomorrow and it needs finishing.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

as i am busy 2nite but want to see duane again, we are maybe trying to meet up 2moro also, though when and where is not yet sorted

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i think so

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Ow, my head. I'm hungover.

Twas nice to meet those of you I'd not met before! And HSA has now decided that he likes FAPs. Oh no, ruin!

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hoorah! Sorry about the head!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 23 October 2003 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm v glad i left when i did, as i have no hangover and am not tired, and i only got up an hour later than my usual mentalist time. this is all just as well, cos i have a hard day of maths ahead of me (which is why i left when i did). good to see you all, nice to talk to HSA...

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 23 October 2003 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

duane i am home after all (i pretended i wz ill!) so call me there

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)
