This is the thread where Horace tries to come to terms with what DC has done to his childhood hero, Hal Jordan.

So, as some of you may know, I've recently been sneaking back into buying comics after 12 years.
Way back, I was a Green Lantern fan. In my parents garage, I have a set that goes all the from the 70s (beginning with the Green Lantern/Green Arrow run by Denny O'Neill and Mike Grell) to the first 10 issues of the current series. I was big into all the DC heroes. I stopped buying comics because I started spending my moolah on music.
Anyway, I've lately been trying figure out what the damn deal is. I don't know who the Kyle Rayner is (and his first costume is easily the WORST GL outfit EVER, I kinda like the current one though), but I'm gonna find out.
I don't have the Emerald Twilight/New Dawn TPB yet, but I've ordered it from my local comicorium.
So last week I picked up all five Zero Hour issues. Stupid damn crossover bullshit. You get little vignettes that point you to other damn comics that probably suck and only have three panels that your actually interested in anyhow.
Yesterday I picked up all four Final Night issues. Only to discover that the story I was looking for in there is in some Parallax: Emerald Twilight oneshot.
And then I learn that they've also killed Oliver Queen (but brought him back). And in the first issue of Zero Hour, the Flash dies (again), except it's in the 63rd (or something) century. And it's Wally West. I had thought that it was Barry Allen who had moved into the future (after his trial and before his death in Crisis). But WallyFlash is still everywhere, so I guess he didn't really die either.
And the Justice Society is back from Limbo. And sometimes they're old and sometimes they're young and sometimes Alan Scott has a power ring and sometimes he doesn't. And sometimes he's called Sentinel and sometimes (like in the recent Detective Comics "Made of Wood" arc--which I should say I loved) he's GL. And his costume varies as well.
I feel so screwed up, so confused. I even had a dream about Green Lantern last night.

And don't even get me started on this Spectre business!

DC will always let you down, man.

It's just like, ever since they killed the Flash in Crisis, they've just taken this perverse joy in killing off people when they decide they can't be bothered coming up with interesting stories.
Yet somehow, Firestorm remains intact???

The Kingdom Come books are fun, tho-- you should get those.

oh yeah, and everything from Evan Dorkin. Even he has a livejournal, too, from which you can reach mine...

Yeah, I got the KC tpb.
I think the grandeur of the art glosses over the fact that the story never really lives up to its promise.
What else have I really liked?
I got the JLA/JSA: Virtue and Vice, and loved it. Totally the kind of classic superhero team-up action-adventure I loved comics for when I was 10.

KC = worst comic ever, as I think I have said a million times. Mark Waid and Alex Ross together is like Noel Gallagher and Yngwie Malmsteen teaming up.

(CAUTION SPOILERS FOR HORACE)

I quite liked the whole Kyle Rayner thing - take iconic character and make him someone fairly dislikable and useless who has to learn how to be a superhero, as opposed to all the big DC stars who are generally these amazingly upright people who handily happened to also get superpowers. I thought he was used really really well by Grant Morrison in his JLA run, for instance. BUT -

i) a good concept does not a good comic make when Ron Marz writes it.

ii) there was no need to turn Hal Jordan into a bad guy - give the ring to someone new sure but leave it a complete mystery what had happened, a good plot for the new character to get his teeth into.

iii) Oh well, all water under the bridge now.

I think it would've been possible (and much truer to the character) to have turned Hal Jordan into a villain with making him a grimacing madman. Esp. since he didn't believe he was a villain, he thought he was doing the right thing. So why would he have given himself such a corny villainish costume, with pointed tips on the upper corner of his mask (sure sign that hero is now villain).
I think it would've been far more interesting to have had him not "go mad" with all the Cesar Romero laughing that entails but to have had him flip out in a much more subdued way. Like Batman (whose true motivation is SO suspect).

so, the internet rumours are that Jordan will back in some sort of BACK capacity in 2004.
Dirty damn DC.

"We won!"

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. And blah.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

though I have liked a lot of stuff Geoff Johns has done lately, especially his "Ignition" storyline in recent Flash issues.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, and Firestorm is no longer intact!
