Did anyone else catch the premiere of the Next Joe Millionare?
This time all the contestants are Europeans (German, Swedish, Czech, Italian, Dutch), and Joe is a Cowboy from Texas. It looks like it will be interesting, probably more than the first.

Regarding the contestants: how out of touch do you have to be to fall for a second run of this premise? Then again I suppose that's why the contestants are Europeans...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what I don't get is why some of them have very American accents.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dubbing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

then, what I don't get is why some of them have subtitles below everything they say even though it's in English.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Just saw it here, or sort of half-listened while grading papers ... I didn't really hear any American accents as such, it just seemed like some of them had more pronounced accents than others.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh when's it start/started/showing? I don't care if it's fake, it's funny.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The reaction when the Eurogirls were told their Millionaire was a cowboy was one of the best things I've seen on reality television (okay, I've hardly watched any reality television): "It was like he told us he was Santa Claus." And later: "I think it's so charming that someone would still be a cowboy," or something like that. I wanted Sam to show up out of nowhere and kick a little ass.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I only saw a few minutes but the girls I saw were total Monets.
That is my critical analysis. Thank you.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Monets? curvy and blurry?

TAI

What's a monet?

CHER

It's like a painting, see? From far away, it's OK,
but up close, it's a big old mess.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That vs. Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility FITE?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I think it's pretty obvious that the Euro Joe Millionaire is going to be a huge step down from the original. My biggest problem initially is that almost none of the women are all that attractive (I think the female host is hotter than any of the contestants), the cowboy character just isn't as compelling as Evan Marriott, and my god, those accents on the women...I realize they're speaking a second language here, but I don't know if I can go an entire season of hearing phrases like "he is such sexy American man, I like such things he does."

But I think the clash between the Eurotrash/clubber tendencies of the women and the down-home, shy Texan cowboy should make for some good (i.e. bad) teevee, so I'm going to stick it out for at least another 2-3 weeks.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy is incredibly bland, yeah. I didn't see much of the first one, so can't really compare, but this guy just doesn't keep me from wanting to put a DVD in. And that's good! Cause I have Hitler papers to grade tonight and can't watch much engaging television in November.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Hitler is dead, you know. I don't think he cares what his grades are gonna be anymore. Or is this some bizarre extension of Nuremburg?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It's this "school reform" thing, the idea is to show that Hitler was a failing student, and that grade inflation is the only ethical and reasonable response to the education crisis, because an unearned B could quite likely prevent genocide.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Where's Dutch again?"

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This guy seems to be even less suave than Evan, whom I always thought to be more capable than everyone else gave him credit for (occasional chauvanism notwithstanding).

But man, David Smith (can your name get any more blasé?) is more interested in the horse than the gurls, and if he's already starting to meltdown by the second episode, this is gonna suck.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't see this yet. is Paul the Butler still around? why doesn't he get his own show?

ModJ (ModJ), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG NOTHING happened in the first episode, it was excruciating. I am never watching anything again that I can't put on Tivo-time. I did like it when the ladies talked about going to his ranch and eating ranch dressing all the time though.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

There's your euphemism for the day.

"Extra creamy?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Or what about the one girl who said the first thing she would ask him would be: what he did, like if he was on a ranch all the time, or if he went clubbing.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"What exactly is a rodeo?"
"I think it is....a festival of horses."

1. That chick in the leopard print pants doing a hoedown jig was a golden moment in the history of reality tv.

2. My bets are on the Swedish girl. I think her chances are good 'cause she looks like a horse.

3. 11 000$ in annual winnings, eh? Mustn't be a very good cowboy.

Miss Laura, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

All the girls seem to have nosejobs. Look how tiny their nostrils are! (cf. Joe Torre)

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No no, that's a European thing. It's a genetic adaptation because they don't bathe.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(Euroilxors, I kiss you.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

it bombed in the ratings!

A hat != an effective personality substitute

Miss Laura, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

awl man, he voted off the funny one who sweared like a sailor at the picnic! I think it was a mistake keeping that other blonde that was getting so upset when she was being picked right away. Alessia is really funny too, so that was a probably good choice to keep.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

eight months pass...
what happened in the end?

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)
