how wd i find out who the architect of CHELTENH*M COLLEGE CHAPEL is? (built 1841 or thereabouts) (also the rest of Cheltenh*m Coll but that's less important)

It wd be immensely conceptually convenient for my WACK THEORIES if it is
i. sir charles barry (however highly unlikely as he was on the whole no GOTH)
ii. pugin (almost as unlikely: he WAS a goth but also a catholic)

Contact the College direct. Assume a posh accent and they will be happy to help.

a shotgun, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yes but it doesn't answer this question

however i do now know that the inventor of the word "telepathy" was an Old Cheltonian

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

This says James Wilson designed the college. Yeah - why don't you ring the school - someone there will know about the chapel, surely?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark, while you're here, what do you think of Tarantino's new film, Vice magazine, censorship and Hitler?

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Run for cover!

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark, i think I did "cheltenh*m college" chapel architect in Google.

Anyway - this Cheltenham council local history page has a feature on the construction of the chapel and reveals that it was designed by a local architect called Henry Prothero.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The windows were done by Louis Davis who was a pal of William Morris.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark it's not my terrain (I am Gloucester through & through and despise Chelters obv) but happily ILx's own rub Malcom McDowelling was here to save the day.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's quite heavily based on King's College chapel Cambridge by the look of it.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What an awesome site, ambrose. Is it designed as an aid to blowing up churches?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I am an ex-Cheltenham Ladies' College girlie, and we used to have sixth form lessons jointly with the Boys' Coll boys. Their chapel was lovely, but smelled of mouldy old socks.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

no its a guide to best escape routes following the stealing of all the church silver.
you just need 1 x donald sutherland to crack the safe! (cf the nu-italian job).

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"hi i'm writing a book about public schools and i heard yr chapel smells of socks, can you confirm this plz?"
