The Glass Bar

The Glass Bar amuses me. It must be one of the smallest bars in London. Is there a downstairs? It's one of the former gatehouses at the entrance to Euston station btw. I was toying with suggesting a FAP there but I just found out it's women only. Has anyone ever been in? What would happen if I walked in there (as in, has any man here ever walked into a 'women only' bar? Did hilarity ensue?)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

bump

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know about this place but I did read (in that esteemed publication ES magazine) about some bar where there was some kind of women-only glass enclosure. Men were only permitted entrance at the invitation of the women inside. I think some kind of beckoning was involved. I don't think you were allowed to sticj your nose up against the glass or moon either.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i think there should be a women-only FAP - yes all 6 of them! - and they can go to the Glass Bar and tell us of its Tardisian wonders.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm up for it. Suzy? Anna?

I walk past those gateways every day on the way to work, but I never noticed a pub in either of them.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the one on the left side, facing the station. there's a blue neon sign but you can only see it if you're on the bus and coming out of Euston turning West.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I take the bus from Euston, going West - but the 18 or the 205 leave from a strange place - so I will keep an eye out for it tomorrow.

Is it in one of the stone/concrete looking structures with all the names of all the towns the trains go to? Cause that's what I'm thinking of.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh it's opposite the 205 stop iirc

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I am now mystified. How can I go past it every day, and have never noticed it?

I noticed the gatehouses, indeed. But how can *I* of all people miss a bar?

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, you're making me worry that it's been a mirage to me all this time...but why would i fantasize about a women-only bar??

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

behold

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You worry me sometimes, Stevem!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus, you didn't tell me it was a LESBIAN BAR!!!

I can't go there; I might catch Gay!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i've heard that it's really fun, actually. apparently it's a really good atmosphere. but never have had any reason to go, so can't give any more inside info other than that...

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

spare rib ticklers.

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

there are quite a few women-only bars in stoke newington. i don't think this is strict policy, but it generally works out that way

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the idea of a women only bar *necessarily* only lesbian?

Then again, thinking of cultures that tend to practice strict gender separation, the only thing I can think of is Islam, and they kind of have that "no drinking" thing, so they wouldn't have a women only BAR.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the idea of a women only bar *necessarily* only lesbian?

no but being an unreconstructed oaf, i need little excuse to start thinking about lesbians

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

a women-only bar where al the women are forced to wear burkhas would be the most amazing place in the world ever...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm just realising that my post looks terribly homophobic... it wasn't necessarily intended as being homophobic, more wondering really, why women - although they do gather together for social/drinking reasons without men - do it more within the comfort and safety of their own homes.)

(I've participated in girls-only-do's - but generally I've found that they don't happen in bars, because no matter what you're doing, some dumb drunk bloke on the pull will always interfere and make the situation uncomfortable (unless that is the point - drunken slappers stylee) - so would it be a good idea or no to have a women only drinking establishment that wasn't necessarily gay, or is there just not enough of a demand?)

(The more I post the more homophobic I sound, don't I...?)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the idea of a women only bar *necessarily* only lesbian?

no, but one where they have a singles night probably is.

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i've just realised that this whole thread is merely a cunning ploy by steven m to get people talking about lesbianism for his own gratification, therefore it should be locked immediately

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(This also makes me think about the difference between various *types* of bars - there is a big difference in feeling between a Meet Market singles bar and a Local Pub. Being old and dull and married, I'm going to feel uncomfortable in a Meat Market Singles Bar regardless of whether it's gay or straight... Maybe I should just seek out a Local Pub rather than a Women Only Bar.)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the sound of this! Where do I sign? (not for the lesbian bit obv!)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, Pink, maybe we have a calling! We should quit our tedious office jobs and start Cambridge's first Women Only Caffeine And Booze Emporium For Women who just don't want to be bothered by Drunk Blokes On The Pull.

There will be free internet connections, natch, so it can all be reported on ILX.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool, that means I can wear low cut tops & will just get looked at by other women! Yay me! Kate, you've got yourself a deal there lady!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i thought 'women only' was just more PC than calling it a gay bar, but kate you should go in there anyway - y'know undercover. maybe HSA could wear drag and join you?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

HSA's not that into lesbians so I doubt he'd come. (heh, I said come.)

I think that Pink and I are on to something! For women who like to wear sexy clothes just for the sake of looking good, but DON'T want to give out mixed messaged and get perved over.

I would *love* to run a bar... maybe I should give this some serious though, and see if it's actually viable.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, I'm in definitely! (males are only allowed in at our request! Cue James & HSA - locked in a back room somewhere.)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe we could have a sign 'BROWN WELCOME'? huh?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

We could have a "Brown Shoes acceptable!" dress code and everything.

Dress up if you like, and don't worry about boys with The Horn!
Dress like a total slob if you like, and don't worry about having to impress boys!

(Though I draw the line at shell suits.)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the dressed down look anyway - phwoar

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

You may be invited Steve, if you promise not to leer at the women!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the dressed down look anyway - phwoar

For this reason, Stevem would NOT be invited!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i never leer, i am the king of coy

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve would be put in a glass room all on his own for women to point at!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like this idea much better!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

me too, it would be fun to try and beat Blaine's record

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Surviving only on a piped-in supply of caffeinated beer...

(BTW, Blaine doesn't even hold the record. That was set by a performance artist in Brighton - 72 days, I believe.)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

caffeinated beer? i'd be dead within 8 hours thru dehydration methinks. hmmm, i see your plan...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

If they could invent caffeinated beer, I'd have been dead years ago!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

oops *hides plans*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, yeah. i like the idea of having boys and girls seperated by a glass wall so that the leering (on both sides) is just that, and won't interrupt the evening.

to clarify my earlier post, one of my friends from grad school hung out there a lot (she's bi) and said that i should hang out there, it isn't a cruising vibe at all the way some lesbian bars are (apparently) in london. sounds more like the general 'girls only' bar, except singles night, of course.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds good. kate, are you starting enquiries?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

If they could invent caffeinated beer, I'd have been dead years ago!

mmm, overpriced Coffee Porter from C'est What. And mmmmmmmmm chocolate Trappist monk beer from some monestary I don't remeber mmmmmmmmmmmm.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had Chocolate Stout, but it didn't actually have chocolate in it, it was just named that because of it's colour and flavour.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it sounds interesting, let's go.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

a women-only bar where al the women are forced to wear burkhas would be the most amazing place in the world ever...

KISS
Network group for Asian & Middle Eastern bisexual women & lesbians.
Upstairs: 7pm - 9pm All welcome. No need to book.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, Anna, I'm game - so long as it's not on a singles/mingles night!

I mean, it is just up the street from me.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think an only girl FAP sounds fun. I need girl talk.

Mandee, Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe we can schedule it at the weekend, and try to get Pinkpanther to come down!

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll come, sounds nice and i'd like to meet all of you

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't believe i have inadvertently orchestrated a female-only FAP when i am constantly complaining about how everything i do seems to be so male dominated.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we should. I remember the huge sprawling NYChixors day out thread. We need a London girl moment.

So ..
Me
Kate
Colette
Mandee

And maybe?
Pinkpanther
Suzy
Vicky
Sarah
Lixi
Emma

Anyone else? My brain is fogged this morning.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Emma "emsk" who lurks but never posts (except she posted up there) will probably come along!

Pink, you can stay on my couch!

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, i want to come!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it's ok, i know i can't...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

we'll just have to have a men-only FAP...oh wait...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

it's ok, i know i can't...

unless you look really convincing in drag.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole point of having a girls only FAP is so we DON'T feel totally overwhelmed like we usually do, and Suzy and I don't end up in a corner cowering in fear of testosterone!

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

(Though we could see if Ed gets mistaken for a German Lesbian again)

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

If they are feeling left out, maybe the men of ILE could go on one of those testosterone-reaffirming man-weekends-away where they strip and smear themselves in mud and bang drums and yell and slaughter beasts.

Emma, Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds like glastonbury with a bit more killing

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

So, which trip do I go on now?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think a trip to Homebase and the bag of soil section is in order for the men.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, but I have to keep HSA away from Homebase because he always wants to play with the power tools. No dear, I don't care if you did a live experimental jam with sheet metal welding, it's not coming in the house!

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

If there's going to be a MANFAP we should do something really blokish like sit in a dingy pub and talk about music all night.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Crikey he doesn't know a bloke called Alaric by any chance? He has his own FORGE! (Or at least I think to think he does).

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't actually know what the sheet metal welder's name was, this was before I knew HSA. (Obv, since I would have put a stop to all the Evan Parker free jazz crap as well.)

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

welding thin sheet metal is a tricky skill to master. If you haven't mastered it a lot of the sounds will be, "Bugger, I've melted a hole in the sheet"

Ed (dali), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds cool, if the dates are right, I'd definitely be up for this!

Thanks for the offer of the couch Kate! :-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

If they are feeling left out, maybe the men of ILE could go on one of those testosterone-reaffirming man-weekends-away where they strip and smear themselves in mud and bang drums and yell and slaughter beasts.

I thought Ed spent most of the summer doing that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Sheffield has CHANGED since then!!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Archel, do you think she'll come?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

If there's going to be a MANFAP we should do something really blokish like sit in a dingy pub and talk about music all night.

i'm in for this, as long as it does NOT involve strippers...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe meet up towards the end of the night!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i am trying to recant all previous comments of the subject of nudity, inflatable music critic dolls or anything else ridiculous i may have said over the past few days. put it down to jetlag.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, once we are all good and drunk, we should meet up with our oestrogyn/testosterone (delete as appropriate) enflamed, and see how we all get on! i.e. if the men miss the womenfolk more or the women miss the menfolk more, etc. etc.

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd kind of taken it as read that the menfolk would be sitting there flattering themselves into thinking that the women are spending the night talking about them. The womenfolk, of course, are highly unlikely to be doing any such thing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"so which one of the ILE men is the hottest?"

"get out Matt, that wig is fooling none of us"

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"If there's going to be a MANFAP we should do something really blokish like sit in a dingy pub and talk about music all night."

um, is that a joke? isn't that what FAPs usually are?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

let's go to my "secret" pub - only if i get a stool though...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you still using that line Dave? ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i have had many a date there - probably why i'm still single!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

after i told my boy about this he said he wants to hold a tall people FAP. or organise a short people one and then turn up as the resident giant...which wasn't meant to be as mean as it sounds, i'm sure.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 23 October 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevem! Kate! Re: caffeinated beer. Have you never had a coffee stout? WONDERS AWAIT YE!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 23 October 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

But does coffee stout actually have coffee in it? Cause chocolate stout does NOT have chocolate in it.

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(yes it was a joke colette)

(obviously however I will attend any FAP that will have me)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 23 October 2003 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll have to ask next time.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 23 October 2003 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole point of having a girls only FAP is so we DON'T feel totally overwhelmed like we usually do

Surely just one man couldn't overwhelm you all? I think you should allow Dave to go.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole point of having a girls only FAP is so we DON'T feel totally overwhelmed like we usually do, and Suzy and I don't end up in a corner cowering in fear of testosterone!

i actually read this as cowering in fear of TOBLERONE!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i was saying the blokes should go to my "secret" pub anyway...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

besides, i spend my life surrounded by women anyway... it would be good to escape their unwanted advances for once

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ts: unwanted advances vs no advances at all (hmmm, i guess i'll stick with the latter actually)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Except the second 'attractive' was supposed to read 'attracted'.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 23 October 2003 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think an all girl FAP is a fantastic idea.

When I was taking an art and architecture class in London a few years ago, our professor pointed out the Glass Bar to us when we passed it on out walking tour. He was curious to meet anyone who had gone there.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

so when is this going to happen? have any dates been suggested yet?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 24 October 2003 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Not yet. Anyone care to start the bidding?

I thought maybe a Saturday would be best so our out-of-towners would not need to worry about last trains and after work and all that sort of thing?

kate (kate), Friday, 24 October 2003 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)
