Focus Group V - Your Shortlist Suggestions Please

Is it that time already? Why yes!

At the start of next month we'll be seeing the Fifth Freaky Trigger Focus Group - edited by Mike Daddino, with songs this year being chosen by a shadowy Trans-Atlantic committee. But first of all let's open it up to suggestions:

The criteria - must have been released as a US or UK single (to shops in the UK, to shops or radio in the US) between the 1st May 2001 and 1st November 2001

Must be commercially, culturally or aesthetically significant, i.e. likely to invite interesting comment. Commercial significance = was a big hit. Cultural significance = was inescapable or hugely hyped. Aesthetic significance = very good, or very bad, or very original. Please be as loose with these guidelines as you see fit.

Over to you...COME ON BOB THE BUILDER!

Tom, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ok that is enough.

maura, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

45s-only rule invalidates the only two worthwhile records of this year.

the pinefox, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ROMEO!

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pinefox: which records were those?

fill-ins for maura: emotion. everywhere. here's to the night. sweet baby. purple pills.

is the new pulp single going to be a double-a w/trees and sunrise?

i'd also put forth: because i got high. all or nothing. u remind me. contagious. when it's over. start the commotion. i want love.

fred solinger, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Costello / Mutter: For The Stars.

i can't believe i forgot 'what's going on'!!!!

maura, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

all or nothing - O Town
upside down - A Teens
bump in the night - All Stars
anything by Linkin Park

jel, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

some others: stop your cryin'. hard to explain/new york city cops. bad intentions (dr. dre). drowning (backstreet boys). the season has arrived (belle & sebastian).

and, of course, we could pit the charity singles against each other: what's going on? v. we are family v. what more can i give?

fred solinger, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When's the B&S out? I know their LAST single qualifies.

I'm going to try and shake up the f.g. procedure this time so there's less trans-atlantic problems.

Tom, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you also going to shake it up to include LOVE & THEFT?

the pinefox, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

p-fox: wasn't "po'boy" released as a single? there's something to aim for.

actually, new b&s single is out 11/12, which kills it, but jonathan david should still be eligible.

fred solinger, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

who redid 'what's going on?' that song shouldn't be touched, imho. I can't contribute to this thread since I doubt I could name one single that's been commercially released this year.

Samantha, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't know it was. Certainly never heard that. But the track is good. If you're right, then that's my nomination.

the pinefox, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Alicia Keys song! (p.s how do you get on this focus group thing?)

jel, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone on the statscock for ILE will be invited to take part, I'd guess. And anyone else who wants to.

Tom, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

apologies if some are repeats...

21 seconds, hidden place, stop your crying, area codes, juxtaposed with u, broke/won, do you really like it?, pyramid song, so fresh so clean, lapdance, ride wit me, let me blow ya mind, ugly, one-minute man, up middle finger, digital love, fiesta, we need a resolution, hashpipe, last nite.

scott p., Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pyramid Song, Slave 4 U, Gone, Hit 'Em Up Style, Fallin', Hidden Place, Pop, Let Me Blow Ya Mind, We Need a Resolution...

Dan Perry, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"i can't believe i forgot 'what's going on'!!!! "

Mike Hanle y, Monday, 1 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, except for Janet, I *heart* yer list.

nathalie, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Smooth Criminal" - Alien Ant Farm
"My Way" - Limp Bizkit

I admit I saw these two together and the first word that came to mind was 'spooge.' I don't know why. Or do I?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Strokeses do have a single - two of 'em - over here, but I think only "Hard To Explain" qualifies. It will certainly be there.

Also yes "Perfect Gentleman" must be included being as it's the MOST ROMANTIC SONG OF ALL TIME.

Tom, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Take Me Home" Sophie Ellis-Bextor
"Stuck In The Middle With You" Louise Nerding
"Eternal Flame" Atomic Kitten

I doubt any of these qualify, but I'd like to know what y'alls think of them.

Graham, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The last two certainly qualify on the aesthetic significance criterion, as they are both absolutely awful.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Weezer's Hash Pipe - or was that before May? I've lost all sense of time.

Kim, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

While we're on the subject of H-pipe songs, that godawful OPM track should probably be in there as well.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mo'jive by Right Said Fred. I think it was only big in continental Europe but boy does it invite comment. I second the call for Alcazar too - especially if this extends into a debate on the videos.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mo'jive by Right Said Fred. I think it was only big in continental Europe but boy does it invite comment.

The fact that RSF have another single out invites comment.

Nicole, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ROMEO!!

i'm sure "help, i'm a fish" will sneak in, as long as there's nothing by the soggy arsed boys and less dull r&b and a decent pop-garage track ("21 secs" *and* "do you really like it" might split the vote though) I'll be relatively happy :)

carsmilesteve, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm surprised Jonnie isn't shouting for the inclusion of the Hermes house band.

chris, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HERMES HOUSE BAND!HERMES HOUSE BAND! (great version of take me home country roads by German party band)

Jonnie, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HOVA -- Jay-Z

Brooklyn Power.

And if "I'm Real" don't win, I'll be ever so pissed.

JM, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

boo! - sticky ft. ms dynamite - the eve ft gwen stefani tune

Ed, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If Hash Pipe gets in, then Three Small Words gets in. Period.

JM, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bump and flex 'promises'

ambrose, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rock Show.

JM, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What I Really Meant To Say, Cyndi Thomson
No 1 on the hot country chart .

anthony, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we have J-Lo's 'Play' and M.O.P's 'Ante Up' please?

Am I going to be barred from being on focus group AGAIN?

Nick, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, that post above should read "everyone on the ILE statscock except Dastoor".

Tom, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never heard of this "ante up". Or half of Mauras songs. I'm with Carsmile. ROMEO and Help Me I'm a Fish, please. And Bob the Builder, please. Can we have Invasion of the Gabber Robots again, please? Please? It IS ace. YOU KNOW IT IS.

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kind of weirdly, I still haven't heard Help I'm A Fish. Will I like it?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That is not weird, I have only heard it once and 'twas as if in a dream (half asleep on CD:UK). You will wuv it I'm sure. Sarah, get yourself some MTV and you will know the wonder of Ante Up. And Gabber Robots suck.

Emma, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gabber Robots suck

Them's fighting words, Ms Hamilton.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You WILL! Hem hem, I downloaded the mp3 whilst at Preston and burnt it to cd. You can borrow it if you want. I think you'll like it! Most people say it is like Aqua but I sa it is far superior for vocalists surprised intonation/squeak/squelch of the words "You're a fish! Help Meeee" - I imagine it is how a fish underneath that water really WOULD sound. Would it be a danish pop star fish. Whot, can't you see it too?

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They do suck and I am prepared to fight to the death to prove it.

Emma, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am prepared to fight to the death TOO and I have been playing Final Fantasy and I just got some DEATH SPELLS so not only am I hard but I have DORK POWERS too ho ho ho. Not only will you DIE due to being WRONG IN THE HED but I'll make sure you are carrying a card to the grave which says I WuV GaBbEr WobToz 4EVAH wuv EMMA (which is a rhyme, how clever eh readers?)!

As for suggestion of getting MTV - I have only recently been beneficiary of a colour television set. MTV may be a long way in the offing, sadly.

What is Ante Up then?

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Don't Stop Movin'", S Club 7

dave q, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I may have witnessed you picking on the wet and weedy who like PEOTRIE but I am a lot harder and take up your challenge. I shall be awaiting you round the back of the bike sheds with a WET haddock as my second.

I don't lie down if someone tries to fight me. Just commenting, for no reason. I am quite a worthy opponent...

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to merge Ally's list with mine, as she picked up on several songs I'd left off. I'd also like to add "Cut Here" by The Cure, which is the first good poppy single they've done since "High" and "Friday I'm In Love", but no one besides Ned is gonna back me up on that one.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone mentioned Fabolous, right? "Can't Deny It"? (Speaking of Nate Dogg and genius.)

Aaliyah's last single wasn't "Resolution", I don't think - it was "Rock the Boat". At least, it was supposed to be "Rock the Boat".

But what about the ROCK songs? Mod mentioned Blink, and there's Sum, the nookie, Staind, some other folks. The guitar needs representation.

And how about Barenaked Ladies? Yeah, yeah!

David Raposa, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

raposa, still so attached to your "guitars" and "drums." maybe "rock show" should be on it, though; maybe not.

"area codes" is a must: "i've got hos, i've goootttt hos." and ludacris says "whore-d'oeuvres"! fantastic! i'd also add good words for dmx's "who we be" and busta rhymes' "break ya neck."

fred solinger, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blink have to be on there, surely?

If not Rock show then First Date.

chris, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cockfarmer: as it stands, your Focus Group stinks. The regulations ensure that every record on it is a major dud. Even without these regulations, almost every record from 2001 is going to be a major dud. I think you ought to rethink, or you'll be wasting your time and your - considerable - wit and talent.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pinefox: If you want to do an albums focus group, do an albums focus group. But you should be more satisfied with the Freaky Trigger critics poll.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I really love that SUM 41 song...I think I have a mid-twenties crisis. "I don't wanna waste my time, become another casualty of society"...I'm going to buy some skateboard gear and work on my goatee.

I would love to be a part of this focus group. I will even write sensibly.

jel, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Critics poll? Whatwhen? Also, everone else's suggestions are fine, given how out of it I've been. The Aaliyah single tho, "rock the boat" should really be on it because its such a departure from what she usually gets props for. Also, the Fabolous single. Also the Nivea single, and the Toya single. It should be the remix of I'm Real. Contageous should be on there. And the new Ms. Jackson about meeting the right guyt or something, I forget. What about Midwest Swing from the St. Lunatics?

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cockfarmer: I don't know what you mean, 'do a focus group'. I have never done a focus group in my life. I don't do that kind of thing. How do you do it? You're the one that does Focus Groups. But the records which have been named in relation to this FG are all rubbish, which is a shame as you don't only like rubbish records. I know - I've seen them.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but PF, the whole point is that they cover recently released songs that are part of the environment at the time, we all hear them whether we like it or not. these are the songs that should be discussed. You've said that you don't like the records (singles)that are around at the moment (this year?) so you're bound not to like any of the songs discussed, but that's your opinion. Other people have other opinions, surely that's the whole point of the discussion?

chris, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, you are welcome to merge my list with yours as that perhaps might make people listen to my list for once.

David, Rock The Boat is indeed Aaliyah's new single, but I like Resolution much better and I do believe it came out during the time period stated. I don't think Rock The Boat has been out long enough or has made enough of an impact to really do much in the poll, honestly.

Fred, shut the hell up already, what is that, your 8 trillionth post on this thread? You make Nate Dogg sound bad. Anyhow, the best part isn't the bit where he's all "I gotttt hos", it's the sing songy part in the middle, that's the shit. And the shout out guy, now that's something.

Ally, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and what is this, YOUR 8 TRILLIONTH POST ON THIS BOARD? (and i get a "shut the hell up" for agreeing with you, no less!) the "i got hos" part, when he reinforces the chorus, is the best because he does so with such self-assurance and matter-of-factness, like "of course i've got hos." because he does.

fred solinger, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The other part is about 8 billion times better. You still make Nate Dogg sound bad and uncool somehow and that shit ain't right.

Ally, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick: We'll get Ante Up as a write in...

JM, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was this even sent to ILM? ;-) Basement Jaxx - Romeo
5ive - Let's Dance
Blu Cantrell - Hit 'Em Up Style
So Solid Crew - 21 Seconds
Britney Spears - I'm A Slave 4 U
Ludacris - Area Codes
Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head
Kosheen - Hide U
Foxy Brown - Oh Yeah
Mandy Moore - In My Pocket
Bubba Sparxs - Ugly
Misteeq - All I Want The song I would like to bitch about: Train - Drops Of Jupiter

Tim, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim I've only heard three of these songs. I don't consider myself in any way shape or form of avoiding pop so either I am just REALLY unHIP and unKOOL and STUFF or you're all MAD. Ludacris my hairy bum.

Sarah, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If Ludacris was your hairy bum, Sarah, that would be SO COOL. He's amazing.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Same here Sarah. I think it's one of them accursed US/UK/AU problems.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This was not sent to ILM, no ;) The readership is bigger and more typical of pop listeners here.

Tom, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is the readership bigger here? I'm sure I see a wider variety of names on ILM. I know there are more posts here these days but that's just cause we are slaves the the statscock.

Nick, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, are you trying to say that ILM is full of rockist scum?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm the moderator of ILM. Why on earth would I think such a thing?

Tom, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps I should have put a winky-winky after that last post of mine.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And I after mine. Goodness and we British are meant to be good at your sarcasm.

Tom, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

System of a Down - "Chop Suey", Michael Jackson - "You Rock My World", Bubba Sparxxx - "Ugly", Uncle Kracker - "Follow Me", Sum 41 - "Fat Lip", Staind - "It's Been Awhile", Snoop et al - "Lay Low", Linkin Park - "Crawling", Lifehouse - "Hanging By A Moment", Trick Daddy - "I'm A Thug", Lee Greenwood - "God Bless the USA"

Kris, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some that I left off my previous list: Lifehouse - Hanging By A Moment
Nivea - Don't Mess With The Radio
Blue - All Rise
Geri Halliwell - It's Raining Men
Kurupt - It's Over
Eve & Gwen Stefani - Let Me Blow Ya Mind

Tim, Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For some reason, that Nivea mention reminds me to nominate "I Do," which I'm not sure has been named.

scott p., Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would also like to nominate:

Sarah Connor and TQ - "let's get back to bed boy"...as I think it's the WORST song I've heard all year. "Sarah Connor, new diva", always makes me laugh. So bad it's bad.

jel, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Scott, I'm not sure if "I Do" fits the time description, although it's hella good so if it does I'm all for it.

Also:

Lisa Lopes - Block Party... because I want to hear people's reactions from listening once.

Tim, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure whether "Hash Pipe" was after May, but "Island in the Sun" certainly was. Let me add:
"Bad Boy for Life" - P. Diddy
"Stay Together For the Kids" - Blink 182
"Fade" - Staind

Was "The Space Between" after May and released as a single?

palpable, Sunday, 7 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to see The Streets - "Has It Come To This?", but if people feel there's a UK Garage Vote which shouldn't be split or if we're trying to avoid UK/US problems then I guess it doesn't count. Maybe it won't be a big hit and doesn't count as inescapable anyway. But I'd like to know what people here think of it, since part of me loves it and part of me hates it. I guess I just have to wait for it to be on Pop-Eye...

Everything else I'd want in has already been mentioned, I think. Not sure about any of these, but: Super Furries - "Rings Around the World"? That "Daydream in Blue" thing? The Stereo MCs' comeback single? Not that I can think of things to say about any of these, but then I wouldn't be able to. Uh, I'm not really the right person to suggest stuff anyway, I guess.

Rebecca, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm prepared to get behind The Streets' "Has It Come To This?". Maybe we should have a caucus vote for UK garage fans???

Also: Sugababes - Soul Sound, so I can make my humbling Sugababes conversion pathetically public.

Tim, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have a clue whats going on here

Ronan, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do I have to make a suggestion no one else has made? In that case, the Dido/Roswell High themetune single.

mark s, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No one's mentioned Roots Manuva yet.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Cannibal Ox release any singles from "The Cold Vein"? If so, count 'em in.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a review of The F-Word 12" in The Wire this month, so I think it might just squeeze in.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am serious about the Country song. It is a genre that sells well and is very important to people outside of the cities but gets no credit amongst hipsters !

anthony, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"iron galaxy" was released as part of a double pack with co. flow...unfortunately about 6 mos. to a year before the album proper came out. tis a shame because it's a better song than "the f word." (but then again, that's also one of the best songs this year.)

jess, Monday, 8 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Cannibal Ox, I think "Vein" was released as a single this year too. Personally I'd love to see them release "Raspberry Fields", if only for the brilliant battle-rhyme, "Either you like reincarnation/or the smell of carnations".

Tim, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sticking to the pop stuff:

Wheetus -- Teenage Dirtbag falls into those dates I think. Hard to avoid and lovely (proving that you can do both)

Density's Child -- Bootybubblicious

New Order -- Crystal

Avalanches -- Frontier Psychiatrist

Gorillaz -- 19/2000 (was that this summer?)

I-Monster -- Daydream in Blue (released end of May, phew)

stuff I didn't care for...

21 seconds song / alien ant farm / Kylie

and most importantly Louise doing "Stuck in the middle with you", a candidate for the most loathsome record of the year.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of country -- that one tune about the answering machine message. "If this is Amy, I still Love You" or whatever. Also that other one "I'm not talking bout locking down and going out, I'm just talking about tonight"

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have any songs to add besides the ones that have already been named. But I'd like to request that all the regular participants on the Jay-Z/Nas thread be invited to contribute to the focus group.

Ian, Tuesday, 9 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'm prepared to get behind The Streets' "Has It Come To This?"

Me too! I heard it for the first time the other day and had a bit of a wooh about it. And I don't even like UK Garage. It's the first time I've thought "yes - this is the British hip hop"

Nick, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Streets is on Grokepile for anyone interested.

Tom, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
THE STREETS is indeed U&K for everyone. I first heard it on Saturday and it's fcuking wonderful. Also, now I can't get PERFECT GENTLEMEN out of my head and seeing as that song correlates exactly in my brane with Alex T, I can't stop thinking about him either. Dear lord help!

I have downloaded every focus group track off Audiogalaxy. Except the ones I've already got, cause that would be stupid, obviously. Is there anywhere I could put them?
