Speed Networking?

Yeah, that makes me feel a bit ill.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Just that 3 word header is enough to make me nauseous.

I used to have to go to networking meetings for my boss and they were SO horrible. They handed out agendas for every meeting even though there were only about 10 of us present and it always said almost exactly the same thing. At one point, you're supposed to either thank someone for a referral or say something nice about the networking group. Everyone has to take a turn. When it got to my turn, I said, "Oh, we didn't have any leads this week." And they all stared at me until the president was like, "Sarah, that means you need to say something nice about the group." Everyone kept staring at me. It was very awkward. Yuck.

At the conference I presented at the other week they had a "Networking Break" instead of a "Coffee Break". It was probably pretty useful for anyone 'in the industry' but my stuff was fairly tangential to the gripping realities of online payment networks so I just shuffled about a bit. Some people took pity on me and networked with me though - in this respect it was better than a school disco. But they didn't play Wham!

I think sometimes that my gut irritation with this kind of thing has branded me forever as a loser who will not earn as much money as I'd like to.

Absolutely OTM, Tom. I'm sure it would be good for me if I could attend events like this, but...I just can't.

This is the most grubby, disgusting thing of this type that I have the displeasure to be vaguely associated with. Check that slap-worthy last sentence:

Film School of Choice
The Academy is pleased to be the film school of choice among many Hollywood filmmakers and their families, including Steven Spielberg's son; the current James Bond, Pierce Brosnan's son; Academy Award winning actor F. Murray Abraham's son; daughter of Diana Ross; director Luc Besson's sister (The Fifth Element, La Femme Nikita); Ted Danson's son; daughter of fashion designer Donatella Versace; The Police guitarist Andy Summers' daughter; Screen writer Polly Platt's daughter; daughter of Richard Leacock, founder of the MIT film program; Grand son of one of the fathers of modern cinema, Sergei Eisenstein; Son of Linda Fiorentino; David Faustino, star of Married with Children; Alfonso Ribiero star of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air; Christian Castro, famous Mexican singer; cinematographer Phillippe Rousselot's (Planet of the Apes, A River Runs Through It) daughter; son of director David Carson (Star Trek, Beverly Hills 90210); Asian cinema star Takeshi Kaneshiro (Chungking Express); and daughter of Laura Esquivel, author and screenwriter Like Water for Chocolate. And yet, some of the best films to come out of the New York Film Academy are from students with no connections to the film industry.

Yeah. Jesus. I'm terrible about stuff like this. I can't stand the idea of "selling myself." It's actually become somewhat of an issue, because both in my band and in this nonprofit arts group I work with, there are these total go-getter types that will strike up conversations with people on the train and invite strangers to our gigs or sell tickets to fundraisers -- and they make me feel like I'm not doing my job because I don't feel comfortable doing that.

David Faustino, star of Married with Children; Alfonso Ribiero star of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Cripes -- can you imagine being in a class with Bud and Carlton?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 October 2003 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Or Ted Danson's fucking son!

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 23 October 2003 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason that 'the current James Bond' line cracks me up. It's one step away from 'you may remember him from such films as...'

Heh, everybody else is the son/daughter of someone famous, but Bud and Carlton actually ARE (semi)famous.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 23 October 2003 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I also like how they advertise "Hollywood filmmakers and their families" and then toss in marginally famous people who have no direct connection to the film industry.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 23 October 2003 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite is "Christian Castro, famous Mexican singer [...no really, he's like GOD in Mexico!]".
