Is it leagal ?

When you have been laid off , to hire a new person for the same title position whether or not it's in a different department ?

I currently was laid off ( I am an Administrative Assistant ) i worked in the accounting department. However there is an open position in the Human Resources Dept for an Administrative Position.
Is it league to hire someone from the outside or do they have to first choose fron the Laid off bunch of Admin Asst?

Not smart resource management but acceptable business practice where I come from.

I think in that case it's called firing, Nicole.

But if you can get unemployment for it, and it doesn't come off as a firing on your record, that doesn't sound so bad.

It seems to me like even if you were laid off, that position is in another department so it probably involves slightly different work.

um this happened to me and no it's not illegal. Kind of a waste, yeah, but nothing can be done about it.

oh, there's something to be done about it, tho:

Off to the Unemployment Office!

Find out if the advertised opening is your old job. If it is, then apply for it. Your experience would have to mesh perfectly with the job requirements. If they say you're not qualified, then sue them!

I'd say to brush up on spelling and grammar before you apply for ANYTHING.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 23 October 2003 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm, I hardly think posts to ilx is a good yardstick of anyone's spelling or grammar.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

or, to put it another way, if you FILL YOUR COVERING LETTER WITH WORDS IN BLOCK CAPITALS, then I ph34r u won't get the job, suXor!

Especially as you don't know anything about the circumstances they were in when they were typing.

Nicole, If you have actually been laid off, rather than your post being made redundant but them still employing you, then all you can do is apply for the post. If they liked you, then you'll stand a good chance.

nice to see the spirit of caring and compassion still thrives on ilx. she's just lost her job, for fuck's sake. being vaguely pleasant isn't exactly hard to do. anyway, being laid off must suck (i don't know because i've only ever had one job that i could possibly lose and i'm still in it) so good luck nicole.
