they used to have a lot of really cheesy resorts there ... the type of place where Buddy Hackett would perform and had heart-shaped bath tubs.

aside from that, there are some nice state parks. foliage up there is nice, just about anywhere in the Poconos range.

hope that helps somewhat?

it's not that far from allentown and bethlehem. which are interesting, if yer into old industrial towns (bethlehem = hometown of Bethlehem Steel). scranton and wilkes-barre are also not that far, which are both old coal-mining towns.

i think that there are a number of cute little towns up in the Poconos, though none seems to market themselves as aggressively as Jim Thorpe. hackelbernie isn't that far from JT, and i remember that it's kinda cute.

We would camp here a lot when I was a kid, but I was too young to really remember where anything was.

All my West Coast friends always thought (when growing up) that the Poconos were this Carribean tropical paradise island or something. They're weird.

we used to go blueberry picking in tobyhanna state park when i was little. i have no idea precisely where in the poconos that is, or where it is in relation to Jim Thorpe.

Classic: the Knob motel. If it's still there. My family used to stay there sometimes. Very no-frills, lo-buget, in a beautiful setting.

My family lived there when I was born. I don't have any memories of living there. Most of my experiences with the Poconos have been going back with my family and having lots of nice people with more money than us invite us to dinners and cookouts at their homes.

We used to go to Lake Wallenpaupack and Tobyhanna State Park too. (I can't believe Google was able to give me the right spelling for that!)

There's a large Syrian community there too. I wonder if some of their vibes rubbed off on me as a kid.
