Compile Under Easy Listening

Bubbling over with impatience at the failure of the ILE mix tape to get off the runway, I decided to make a compilation yesterday for an old friend of mine called "21st Century Schizoid Man", because it's a genre-hopping monstrosity.

What would be on your ideal compilation tape, and what would you call it?

Just for the record, here's what I put on my baby:-

1) Missing Link - Curve 2) Liar, Liar - The Castaways 3) Love Comes In Spurts - Richard Hell & The Voidoids 4) Suspect Device - Stiff Little Fingers 5) Last Nite - The Strokes 6) Save My Soul - Wimple Winch 7) Back Before You Go - J.Mascis & The Fog 8) Awesome Sound - Ween 9) Sunflower - Low 10) Reality Asylum - Crass 11) Be Stiff - Devo 12) Psycho - The Sonics 13) Bonzo Goes To Bitburg - The Ramones 14) Shipbuilding - Robert Wyatt

15) Kickin' Back - Beachbuggy 16) Bone Machine - The Pixies 17) If We Can Land A Man On The Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart - Beulah 18) Meirion Wylitt - Gorky's Zygotic Mynci 19) Gums Bleed - Foetus 20) Strychnine - The Sonics 21) New Pleasure - Richard Hell & The Voidoids 22) A Perfect Teenhood - And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead 23) Freedom Of Choice - Devo 24) Losing Touch - My Vitriol 25) Arc Arsenal - At The Drive-In 26) Pork Roll Egg & Cheese - Ween 27) Fire Brigade - The Move 28) July - Low

Trevor, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Genre hopping??? Sounds like a fun listen though.

I'm actually thinking of doing a Sussed Hits mixtape, and will report back if I get to work on this, maybe tonight.

Tom, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is the ILE tape going to happen?

well, here is clares tape, which she enjoyed. and hannahs tape, which she never actually received.

gareth, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, when I say genre hopping, perhaps I ought to have pointed out that my pal Dave has listened to virtually nothing but heavy metal for the past ten years I've known him. I haven't got a clue how he's likely to react. Actually I don't really care, because I got a real kick out of making that tape.

Trevor, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Trevor - it's superb! Quite like the sort of thing I churn out occasionally, in fact! Wimple Winch! Castaways!

If I was being harsh I'd knock off a point a two for using artists twice (only allowed in exceptional circumstances) and for including the useless Ween.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, the inclusion of Ween makes the tape superb. Whatchoo talkin' bout, Dr. C?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Could somebody enlighten me re justification for existence of Stiff Little Fingers? Thank you.

dave q, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice touch for putting The Move on. Carl Wayne must be one of the great lost Brit R&B vocalist.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When I read the name J. Mascis, I realized I had a dream about him last night. He looked different in the dream tho, with short hair.

Sean, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

8) Awesome Sound - Ween 9) Sunflower - Low

That is spectacular.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks Nitsuh. In the liner notes I wrote to accompany the tape I described that particular segment as "going from the ridiculous to the sublime". I think it's an essential ingredient of any compilation to have one of those moments.

Trevor, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jel, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

1 GIant MAn - James Last 2 Happy Birthday Blues - Kathy Young 3 Too Much - Limahl 4 Give me it - The CUre 5 etc

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 2 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As much as I love etc, they are a little repetitive.

Jel is the true genre hopper - from Megadeth to The Carpenters. I like it. It makes my compilation look genre limping in comparison.

ethan, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tell me what's on your mixtape Ethan, then I'll be able to decide. I'd definately be up for mixtape trades with Jel and Emily, by the way.

Trevor, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll trade with anyone! It's all good.

jel, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i will be happy to get a tape with anything on it. ask dave popshots, i even loved his indie rock cd-r. email me.

ethan, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Am I being silly here, or isn't one of the coolest things about getting a mix tape from someone the inclusion of a whole bunch of stuff you aren't expecting/wouldn't normally have?

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

trevor's a mixtape fascist and i don't want to trade with him anyway. ween? fuck that.

ethan, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll trade with you Ethan. But you can't laugh at anything I send to you. Unless it's ducks quacking set to a Public Enemy track.

Samantha, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will happily receive mixtapes but I'm not making any for anyone ever again, prior committments aside.

smarmyHank, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

For the record, I asked Ethan to educate my hip-hop ass in the wide world of non-Native-Tongues greatness, which he did. I'll have to listen to the tape a few more times really appreciate it, past the greatness that is Slick Rick's "La Di Da Di", but even I can appreciate Ethan's mixtape skillz. In return, I did make EP an "indie rock" mix, with the following stuff:

  1. Your Time Starts Now - CINERAMA
  2. Accused of Stealing - THE DELGADOS
  3. Play By the Book - k.
  4. The Return of Evil Bill - CLINIC
  5. Everything Happens By Itself - BARBARA MANNING
  6. The Idiot Heart - THE BEAUTY PILL
  7. Just Because It's Dying - FRANKLIN BRUNO
  8. Going, Going, Gone - STARS
  9. Sunday Girls - FAMILY FODDER
  10. The Sublimation Hour - DESTROYER
  11. Fitted Shirt - SPOON
  12. Mesopotamia - NINETYNINE
  13. Hidegen Fujnak A Szelek - THE EX w/ TOM CORA
  14. Panties Off - FUCK
  15. Start a Life - THE POSIES
  16. Idealists Dead - PERSONS
  17. (I Want You) More Than Ever - THE CLIENTELE
  18. Our Time Has Passed - PERNICE BROTHERS

Here's hoping the HTML code works.

I am currently in the development stages of a more agressive & eclectic mix. I am willing to trade this CD (or the one I'll be making in the near future) for ANYTHING, not just music. Mixes are great, but, hot damn, if you're really creative & feel inspired, I will always love you for it. (And that's a REAL love.)

ILE mixtape is off and headed to Cali.

bnw, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to trade mixtapes but that which has never happened before does happen with IL*- I fear that I have nothing you don't already know...

Who's in front of me in the ILE mixtape? They probably need to know where to send it to. And also- who's after me?

emil.y, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"trevor's a mixtape fascist and i don't want to trade with him anyway. ween? fuck that."

Ethan, I think I can spot a weakness in your fascism argument towards the end there.

I'm interested in hearing everyone's tape, although obviously some lists interest me more than others. It's all good though. Apart from yours, of course.

Trevor, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just for the record, I liked Emily's tape(s) best precisely because I only recognised one of the tracks on there - Pink Frost by the Chills. I'd say that was pretty un-fascistic myself.
