(How to heat a small room without setting said) Room On Fire

We only have one heat source in our house, a small gas fireplace in the living room. This makes our living room pretty toasty, but somehow the heat never reaches any of the other rooms in the house. Those space heater things seem a bit dangerous and kind of ugly. We don't need much heat as the weather here is pretty mild, but it's a bit chilly in the mornings. What are our alternatives?

we got one of these a few years ago. it's actually a paraffin heater, but with this fancy fuel-injector arrangement instead of a smelly wick. it was very expensive to buy, but is very cheap to run. It works very well.

If cuddling isn't technology then I say fuck the 21st century.

get some of those little handwarmer/chemical heat things.

and shove them into your pants.

"ha HA! Now is it my pants which are feeling the warmth!"

According to consumer reports cuddling actually costs you more in the long run.

Whatever you do, don't get a kerosene heater.

a friend of mine has one these and it works very well. I think it's filled with oil or something (no odor and safe)

those oil things work well, we used one in an old office. you could also put a fan near the doorway and blow the hot air from the living room into your kitchen and pray it gets into your bedroom. Also, get a carpet.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, oil is important when you're having group sex in your office

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, get a carpet.

carpet nazi! ;P

we have an oil filled radiator as well. (de'longi "dragon" model") it heats up the room really well, but it costs a fucking fortune in electricity.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What is wrong with a space heater? Are they actually dangerous? I have never had a problem at all. Last year, there was no heat in my building. At all. You could see your breath indoors. I eventually put in several space heaters but they weren't large ones so I still had to put on tons of clothing in order not to get frostbite :(

But now I have one big one that I kept in the living room for that time space between when it actually gets cold and when they actually turn on the heat and that worked nicely and it isn't TOOO ugly.

Electricity bills are a fuck though.

Cuz I know it's not as cold as it is here.

I live here, Horace (and sometimes, it actually DOES look like this).

(kinda)

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never lived in S.F., but I have spent months there in aggregate. My feeling about it is that it's ALWAYS cold. And of course damp. Except in the Marina, but that just turns to goo when the quakes come. You're going to have to go electric for safety and comfort.

Skottie, Friday, 24 October 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

It's in the 90s today!

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(but still cold in the mornings)

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Heaven is cold in the mornings?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Freezing, and the "big man" charges up the ass for DSL.

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

or is that Narnia?

Anway, it's much easier to heat a small room than the top two floors of a drafty old three storey house with no storm windows that you're already paying waaay too much rent for anyway and all of sudden you're hit with 300 heating bills and it's NOT EVEN tolerably warm in there!
Went through this last winter. Minus 40 (same in C and F) for like 6 weeks. This winter, one room bachelor suite. hahahahahahahaha.

dammit! stole my joke. Still, a cloud-car-based transport system might save on parking costs, if a bit troublesome in traffic.
