To complement the ILM thread.

The only movie I've ever been not...quite myself at was "Anaconda", and that just made it very, very funny and hungry-making. It is probably funny sober, though.

"complIment"

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I'm a wuss, but I can't go out in public on anything but alcohol or uppers. Even pot makes me a gibbering fool who can barely walk.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I once (with a little help from my friends) smoked a joint in a movie theater during a midnight showing of one of them Cheech and Chong movies. I don't remember which one it was though.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Dazed and Confused whacked out on squeef.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually once I made it through the first 20 minutes of a midnight showing of The Wall not knowing what movie we were watching. What's worse is that I had seen The Wall before. Twice.

Shrooms are great, huh?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had some wonderful shroom experiences, some not so good.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I took so much acid the first time I saw Dark City that I ended up seeing Dark City a second time.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Too much acid and a showing of "The Gift", I couldn't listen to Janes Addiction for years after that night.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

don't get me started!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll tell you this, "Mars Attacks!" was humorous the second time I saw it on video, but NOWHERE near as funny as the 'first' time I saw the film in the theatre.

earlnash, Friday, 24 October 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

'the big lebowski' was absolutely terrifying. (nb i rarely use drugs)

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i was so high at 'old school' that i ate a whole box of sno-caps! omg!

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I was once so mashed at the Scala in Kings X, I happily sat through a whole live G. Dead concert movie (on a dbl bill w/ the first crappy animated 'Fritz the C' flick, and at the time you could smoke (anything!) at the Scala, man the air was a thick fug that eve, happy days running over the hill like wild horses, etc. etc.)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "I was so high at ILX that I posted a load of old cobblers"

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

....High School High was not only a comedic masterpiece, but quite possibly the highpoint of American cinema. Acid sucks, huh?

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

no!

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched Hannibal in a somewhat altered state. I couldn't be bothered trying to figure out what was going on in the film because I was crazed with a hunger that two ice creams and fistfuls of popcorn would not sate. I do remember the brains bit though, I was all like "mmm... tasty brain meat..."

rainy (rainy), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Why Rainy, you cannibal. :-) (And yes, we got your text message a week ago, rah!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I got so drunk and stoned at a moonlight cinema (outdoors cinema in the park) showing of Fear & Loathing that, partway thru the film, I got up and wandered off to find the toilets (which were so far from the lawn!), and when I got back I realised in the dark and my trashed state I couldnt figure out which bunch of bums-on-blankets was my friends! :-/ I spent half an hour scuttling to and fro trying to work it out and not get in anyones way. I eventually found them just as Andrew was about to send off a search party, ha.

I don't remember a single thing about the film, but I do recall being a fuckwit all the way through. Suitable film for it, I guess.

It actually should be "complement". Unless I don't know what I'm talking about and you're trying to pay a compliment to ILM.

kirsten (kirsten), Saturday, 25 October 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

-Pee Wee's Big Adventure
-Fantasia re-release
-The Kids Are Alright
-some movie at the Vista that i can't even remember (er Chris a little help here?) but i know i saw it and i think we took another person who was not aware of our state but i don't know who (ned? jordan? kip? shit, don't remember) what i *do* remember is that the theatre looked absolutely magical, ornate, other-worldly --maybe this was one of the Star Trek movies...

...each with the appropriate accoutrements....

It was Star Trek VI and Kip was along. The movie was total shit (well, the re-entry of the Enterprise was kinda cool looking) but the theater was amazing!

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 26 October 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I was once stoned and fucked up the ILX server for a few minutes.

Whoops.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 26 October 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I no longer perform system administration under the influence, you'll be pleased to hear.

In answer to the original question, I find being stoned doesn't really alter the moviegoing experience for me personally, but once I went to see Austin Powers: Goldmember with my parents and we shared a spliff beforehand. Recently I asked my mum about the film and she didn't even remember seeing it. (despite raving about it on the way home afterwards)

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 26 October 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' after a few spliffs was thoroughly engrossing.

Billy Minniken, Sunday, 26 October 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a famous memo Disney sent out to theatre owners when they rerealesed Fantasia in the late Sixties; it's about hippies and what to do when they show up stoned and/or tripping at the movie. It's very strange.
