I'm not usually so gung-ho for the r#d m^*t, but last night I had a burger at the White Horse Tavern and I really enjoyed it. What is your favorite burger joint? I hear that Corner Bistro is a stong contender; also Plan 9 featuring California-style burgers has its adherents. Also: hamburgers vs cheeseburgers.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Plan 9 = Blue 9

felicity (felicity), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

cheddar cheese with jalapenos. best. also like onions cooked in the meat but not on. don't like fancy shit like mushrooms, swiss or bbq sauce.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Corner Bistro is pretty dang good. My personal favorite is Diner in Williamsburg. That is a truly tremendous burger, and it's $7 w/amazing fries. Of course, you have to put up w/Williamsburg, but it's a fucking fantastic burger. Maybe it's $8, can't remember.

Also a killer in Brooklyn is Cafe Lafayette in Ft Greene -- wicked good burger.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and firmly: cheeseburger. If possible.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Cafe Lafayette is a good cafe. I've had a veggie burger there (I don't eat red meat) and it was pretty good.

hstencil, Friday, 24 October 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

red meat was one of the reasons i stopped being a veggie. mmm, cow. ::drool::

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, most of their food (Cafe Lafayette) is overpriced but really really good. Burger's a good deal. It used to be BYOB, and a little cheaper, so I'd eat there a lot (I live a block away).

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

well I live pretty close to there too so we must be neighbors!

hstencil, Friday, 24 October 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmmmm, I wonder if we've met before and DON'T EVEN KNOW IT!!

Ahem, I'm sorry, that was a PM cup of coffee shouting.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never been to the celebrated places or had the Boulud foiegrasburger, but think Big Nick's, UWS, should be a contender.

not city or borough-wide (maybe neighborhood, and now a mini-chain), but I like the focaccia burger and other things at The Barking Dog. it's probably the best of the UES' teflon-via-takeout places.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pantry (on Avenue B near 11th St) serves a darned tasty burger, and the fries ain't too shabby either.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbneb OTM about Big Nick's, also you can get it at 5am delivered to your door!

But I'm not that discerning. Show me a bloody hamburger and I will show you how fast I can eat something.

Allyzay, Friday, 24 October 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

B-but you can't have a burger delivered!! It's gotta be fresh off the grill or you might as well be eating McDonalds.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, because freshness is obviously your concern at 5am.

Allyzay, Friday, 24 October 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'll grant you that the options at 5am are going to be a tad limited. But it's really a crime to wrap up a freshly-grilled burger and send it out into the cold, cruel world like that. (I won't even mention what it will do to the fries.)

o. nate (onate), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

corner bistro is amazing. diner is oh so tasty, but i think cb has it beat. molly's, an otherwise average irish pub on 22nd and 3rd, is almost as good as diner in the burger stakes.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

o. nate, I am not disagreeing with you. Obviously the appropriate setting for the burger is straight off the grill, onto a plate, and placed in front of you at the restaurant. But it's not always an option!! And if the delivery joint is close to your house it doesn't really matter THAT much, it won't get cold or nasty by the time it gets to you. The main problem is the bun will sog a bit more than normal, which is always a problem for me anyway cos I like them practically raw :(

Allyzay, Friday, 24 October 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, lauren, you like Molly's? I do too, it's right around the corner from where some friends of mine live.

hstencil, Friday, 24 October 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

molly's is great, especially if you eat burgers. the fries are pretty sweet, too, now that i come to think of it. that's very important, as a lot of places seem to think they can slack on the french fries and no one will notice. that is wrong wrong wrong!

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

scraaaanchmummmmmfmumblemunchmuncfppppmunch!

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it's really a crime to wrap up a freshly-grilled burger and send it out into the cold

this is why the world gave us styrofoam. and takeout burgers do vary significantly in quality. which brings me to burgers that one might want to avoid. let's start with jackson hole.

(if this were not restricted to NYC, my answer might be the Old Ebbitt Grill. though I haven't been there since i was a teenager, at least, and I had a burger at Clyde's in August that was nothing special)

(also i didn't mean that barking dog is the best burger in UES, but that it's a neighborhood not destination restaurant)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't mean to be an ass about the delivery thing. Of course, I'm exaggerating my reactions a bit - though I think we agree that freshness is a key factor with burgers. Actually, I think that if you have to have a burger delivered, it's better to have it wrapped in waxed paper or something similar, rather than putting it in a plastic container that seals - because it will get a lot soggier that way. Styrofoam is probably okay as long as it doesn't seal too tightly.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue 9 is indeed great (and I will now and forever more refer to it as Plan 9 and croon manfully like Glenn Danzig every time I order a burger there). Corner Bistro is still great, but it's always so damn crowded. Saw someone have a seizure last time I was there.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i've also heard that at brunch/lunch, peter luger serves burgers although they're not on the menu. supposedly pretty cheap (under $10) and very very tasty.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

One thing I like about the Pantry is that they serve the burgers on a Portuguese roll, which is slightly sweet and complements the salty tanginess of the burger nicely.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know Peter Luger's has a brunch!

hstencil, Friday, 24 October 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

well, it might be more of a weekend lunch.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread was well-timed. i just got a veggie burger from pantry for dinner. it is delicious - homemade, not a nasty gardenburger, and on a portugese muffin like the regular burgers.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul's, on 2nd Avenue just south of St. Marks Place. Can't beat their burgers.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 26 October 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(Good World has a pretty unusual burger. They put beets right into the beef. Served on an English muffin. It's delicious.)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 26 October 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

There is something to be said for the White Castle duo served at 3 a.m at the Parkside. What that something is, I'm not sure.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 26 October 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

hi Mary!! charlton lido is looking at a flat today that's 5 minutes from mine

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 26 October 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Tracer -- NY misses you too; mwah!

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 26 October 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Awwww!!!!!!! I don't miss White Castle, though. I mean "steamed" burgers? Honestly.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 26 October 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man, do I want a hamburger right now

one year passes...

I'm pretty sure my fave burger in Williamsburg is at Spikehill on Bedford. Fuck an overpriced, small Dumont burger and double fuck the frozen patties most places serve. When I can get a delicious, fresh, cooked to order 1/2 lb burger with fries for $8.75 ($7.75 if no cheese!) including tax, I am a happy camper. Also, during the day they're usually watching CNN on one TV and like, the Travel channel on the other. Also, they have good beers on tap & a large selection of bottles as well. IMO it is a better, more pleasant experience than going to the similar Mugs.

I had the burger at Matchless the other night and it was okay. Though they do that 1000 Island dressing thing and that is lame imo.

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

Best burgers in Manhattan imo are Paul's and Rachel's. Corner Bistro is alright but not really worth the trip to the West Village.

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

Pies n Thighs had a great burger, but...

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

wait, I mean Molly's not Rachel's I think. I dunno what the fuck Rachel's is.

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

Blue 9 and Shake Shack are both not my style.

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

Luger burger is great too.

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

Skip the fries, they're not that exciting. But get the bacon, it's special.

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

I like Jimmy's Diner, they have many diff varieties of burger however when I go there I usually get the fried chicken.

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

wait, I mean Molly's not Rachel's I think

Molly's Shebeen on Third Ave in Gramercy? I had a great burger there earlier this year. Definitely better than your average NY restaurant burger.

o. nate, Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, that's the one. the burgers and wings are both great.

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

Ian if you ever in Mid-Missouri we got to go to BOOCHES.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)

You would like, imo.
No fries, tho.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)

whats the matter w/ shake shack

Bobby Wo (max), Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

Shit I've had Blue 9, Shake Shack, DuMont, Pies N Thighs and Luger... and I'm not even a huge burger eater.

My favorite "fancy burger" yet to be mentioned is super close to you dude @ Walter Foods, across the BQE from my crashpad. Over $10 though so that sucks.

Also, there's a place either in or near Flatbush that I think LaurenP (?) told me about that serves burgers on english muffins?

♪♫(●̲̲̅̅̅̅=̲̲̅̅̅̅●̲̅̅)♪♫ (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

Shake Shack is out the way for me and not really worth the wait/trip imo.

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:21 (sixteen years ago)

will check out walter foods, which yes, is very close to me.

ian, Thursday, 5 November 2009 21:22 (sixteen years ago)

Best NYC burger is at Ear Inn, est. 1817

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Thursday, 5 November 2009 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

where is said Ear Inn, sexyd?

ian, Friday, 6 November 2009 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

near Don Hills, basically, right?

I still rep for Donovans, because it's my local and because it's so freaking basic. It's just meat, that tastes better to me then most other meat.

dan selzer, Friday, 6 November 2009 00:27 (sixteen years ago)

i've heard great things about Donovan's and have had plans to go there but they always fall through.

ian, Friday, 6 November 2009 00:34 (sixteen years ago)

i'll meet you for lunch sometime, when nobody's there and you have the best chance of getting the burger cooked right (medium rare) and seeing the delightful small cross-section of queens citizens who go to a dark irish pub for lunch.

dan selzer, Friday, 6 November 2009 04:41 (sixteen years ago)

who wants to go to minetta tavern and try the $26 burger

Bobby Wo (max), Friday, 6 November 2009 04:51 (sixteen years ago)

f that

ian, Friday, 6 November 2009 04:51 (sixteen years ago)

Shake Shack was the best (vegetarian) burger I've ever eaten in my life.

EDB, Friday, 6 November 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

Ear Inn is on Spring near the West Side. It is my favorite place in the city.

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Friday, 6 November 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

I love Ear Inn in general, but not their burger in particular. Donovan's is a nice place, but I'm not overly fond of their burger. My current fave burger is at Sparrow in Astoria, but I wouldn't recommend a special trip for it.

Virginia Plain, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:11 (sixteen years ago)

i have heard good things about Sparrow to be honest, but am never up in that neck of the woods so to speak.

ian, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

I went to Burger Heaven near MoMA last night. Decent, crap fries tho.

Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 November 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

now see, I just had Sparrow's burger for brunch two weeks ago for the first time and thought while it was fine, I was mostly into the fried egg and fontina cheese and the english muffin and great fries. The burger itself wasn't that special! Donovan's on the other hand, is quality meat.

Sparrow's a cute place though, went back the next week after picking friends up from the airport. Wish somebody would open something like that in Woodside/Sunnyside.

two months pass...

I want to go back to Molly's asap! Ate their before Christmas after doing some shopping.

Tonight I have to settle for a "black & bleu" burger from kellogs, with homefries. homefries & burger is a really great combo imo. i hate regular fries with my chicken fingers for dinner.
