I've never been to a FAP. With all this LA+NYC+London type talk, shall we have one in Oxford?

I've never seen a FAP in Oxford, and I bet they're great fun. I've a rather meek character myself, with very little interesting to say, so litening to the great wits on this board with be marvellous. Whatcha reckon?

Johnney B, Saturday, 25 October 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd be up for oxford, ms

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 25 October 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, I was thinking more of Oxford UK - thanks for the support though!

Johnney B, Sunday, 26 October 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oxford, UK is the new Oxford, MS. Or something. Maybe the new gray.

Skottie, Sunday, 26 October 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to visit Faulkner's house too.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 26 October 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be up for this Johnney B! Definitely! I suspect Enrique will be too.

Question is - when? I am on holiday 3rd-7th November inclusive so that's out.

Next Saturday is a possibility.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 26 October 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect Jellybean will be up for this although it will have to be nice and CENTRAL for her!

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 26 October 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Only weekend thats no no for me is weekend of the 14th. Next weekend would be cool, yeh. (weekend of the 1st)

Johnney B, Sunday, 26 October 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

next weekend would be good.. though it's my mega drinking + gigging weekend. so it'd have to be afternoon or early early evening.

but i finish this horrible horrible project on friday.. so will be up for lots of drinking over the weekend

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 26 October 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and if we do it in the afternoon, then we might be able to persuade the BUSY LONDON people to come up to Oxford as well.. and get back in London in time for what ever busy stuff they do.

Don't know why I used capitals there.

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 26 October 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeh, I guess the afternoon would be cool. I could take the day off work - it'd be quality!

Apart from guzzling large amounts of ale, does anything else happen at these gatherings?

And you used capitals because they're London people hence more important, and therefor better people, then us Oxford pond scum.

I reckon.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 27 October 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

so, November 1st in the afternoon then. 2pm onwards?

Now we need to decide on a venue. The Turf?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn. The city of Oxford hates me. But still, I want an excuse to go there. Though I'm already making journeys to strange Zone 7 places on both Friday and Sunday. Sigh.

kate (kate), Monday, 27 October 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The city of Oxford hates me

wherever did you get that idea? we will welcome you with open arms.

btw, is Zone 7 a real thing or just something London ppl have coined to describe "out in the sticks"?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had very very bad experiences with the City of Oxford, mainly revolving around evil ex-boyfriends and their evil music empires, but we shan't go into that. I love the city anyway! Oh, the architecture!

Zone 7 = the rest of England that is not London. Though with the Oxford Tube, it's closer than, say, Tooting.

kate (kate), Monday, 27 October 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

(Zone 8 = Rest Of The World)

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 October 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Zone 9 = OUTER SPACE?!?!?

kate (kate), Monday, 27 October 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Zone 10 = Tatooine.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 27 October 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Zone 11 = THE DEATH STAR!

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I would be reluctant to come to this were we to have a similar turnout to the last attempt to have an Oxon FAP back in January, i.e. three.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 27 October 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnney B + me + jellybean + Kate + Marcello = 5 already!

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I said I might, depending on whether HSA has made any plans without telling me! (which he's been doing a lot lately.) However, if I come, HSA will come, which will make 6.

kate (kate), Monday, 27 October 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Im down with The Turf. Apparently its where Howard (Aussie PM) broke the Oxford record for a yard of ale.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 27 October 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

FAP record breaking attempts ahoy! Dedication's what you need, allegedly.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i COULD come, i'd only have to jump on the Oxford tube at Hillingdon - depends on the date tho (would have to be Friday or Saturday innit) - but maybe a day out in Oxford is a good idea for me

stevem (blueski), Monday, 27 October 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

A yard of dedication, maybe.

2 o'clock is good for me - I've gotta get the time off first though, so are we settled on that before I run grovelling to my boss?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 27 October 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, the 1st! Thats a Saturday!

Oh thats okay then. Why did I have it in my head its a Friday?

Right, I'll be n there about 2ish then.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 27 October 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

brilliant, c u there!

um, how will I recognise you?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, you have no excuse not to come to Oxford. the evil ex is currently in America, and I'll make sure none of the record empire lot turn up.

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, but can you persuade Rebecca to turn up? Work yr magic, Charlbury Festival stylee.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, which evil ex are you talking about? The drumming one? Is he STILL there? That makes me so cross! Dammit! You know, I haven't been back to America in over 2 years, and that fuXor is still on tour there? Like they don't have enough sucky pseudo-Country Eagles cover bands in the States?

x-post. If Rebecca promises to be there, I will definitely come!

kate (kate), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

is it better to travel to OXford by Tube or train?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

TUBE!!! TUBE TUBE TUBE TUBE!!! IT IS THE BIG RED PARTY BUS!!!

Ask Thom Yorke!

kate (kate), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I was on the Tube with Thom yorke he was being all grumpy at the back while the rest of ver Head were cavorting like people who had neve rknown a days unhappiness.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF!

I went on Friday -- took 50min from Gloucester Green to fucking Headington. 2 hours and a quarter all told. In the afternoon.

Train: 1 hour.

Only bus if you're coming home later than 11.30ish, and late at night it is as quick as the train.

The Mysterious Lewknor Turn (Enrique), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oxford tube is v.cool, and only a bit over a tenner return, so saving a lot the cash-conscious among you, although it does take a little longer.

MarkH - I'm about 6'3", and probably wearing a Motson/Del Boy sheepskin. If I walk in and nobody shouts "JOHN ROXOR!", I'll hold up my CD Player and wonder about for a bit.

Never having been to a FAP - how does everyone identify themselves? Whats the usual procedure?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Tube better - it is cheaper and more convenient for a day visit. Also, you can get off the Tube in the High Street, which is a short walk away from the Turf

map here.

The driver should helpfully shout out "High Street". Cross the street by St Mary's, the University Church, which you can't miss as it has a tall spire and barley-sugar columns. Go down the narrow passage way to the right of the church (not marked on map) which brings you into the cobbled Radcliffe Square which has this in the middle of it:

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~tolksoc/TolkiensOxford/radcliffe_camera_s.jpg

go to the right of the Radcliffe Camera and take a right down New College Lane. The Turf is down a narrow passage which is normally marked with one of those folding blackboardy type signs.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Is The Turf the really old medieval pub that's right next to the city walls, in fact, part of the boundary of the beergarden is actual, authentic Roman wall? If that is the one, I LOVE THAT PUB!!! Except it's quite big and really hard to find people in...

kate (kate), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

There isn't a fancyapint link, but there's this instead. I will try and get in touch with Rebecca, and persuade her to come to Oxford, cos one of the (old?) favourite bands is playing that night as well.

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a classic pub. Superhot briars.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

this is all sounding good, bit worried about A40 traffic tho

stevem (blueski), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

On a saturday morning you should be okay, I would imagine, especially coming away from London.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(old?) favourite bands is playing that night as well.

which band, I wonder? I was in the Port Mahon on Tuesday to see Rachael Dadd and they (rather cheekily I think) had posters up saying Ballboy are playing there on Saturday evening, when in actual fact it's a solo set by their singer Gordon.

...but I suspect you are referring to The Bigger the God at the Zodiac, no?

if anyone's worried about not finding everyone else, then email me and I shall divulge my mobile no. to you.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have too much packing to do for my upcoming house move to consider this. As for how to hook up, the correct way is to go up to random strangers in the pub, lean over and whisper "Hey - do you...love everything?"

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 27 October 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm having a big halloween party on Friday night, so it's very very unlikely that I'll be in a fit state to be able to walk and talk by Saturday lunchtime, let alone make my way into Oxford:)

C J (C J), Monday, 27 October 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds like it's going to be quite a party!

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the Mighty Nought are playing at that TBTG show as well. It's going to be fun.
CJ- I might end up at a halloween party (don't think it's yours though) on the friday night as well.. just thought that a pint would be the perfect thing to get rid of a hangover

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

of course it would!

I shall be at a housewarming party on the Friday, which isn't a specifically Hallowe'en thing AFAIK. Well, at least *I* won't be dressing up (tho there would be those who would claim I don't need to).

So we can all be hungover together!

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got quite a few people crashing out at my place after the party, so it'd be a bit rude to wander off and leave them to go to another do. Plus there is no public transport from where I live, and I might not be sober enough to drive :(

C J (C J), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

You wimps! I'm off to a Halloween/ goodbye-from-work party Friday night as well - I'll be jitterbugging away at Saturday lunchtime, you watch!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'm going to have to back out of this, unfortunately. Because we've been invited - or summonsed - to Sunday Lunch with my family the day after. This is the first time that HSA will meet any of my lot, so it's probably better if neither of us is horrendously hungover. Sorry!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i could go to this as i currently reside in oxford and the turf is like 2 minutes away from me, i am not a notable ilxor or anything, but i can go

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

and also i have never been to a fap, is there any special code of conduct for these things?

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Just fancying pints. Though this is certainly not obligatory.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought lezzing up was urgent and key?

kate (kate), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

A) Wot does FAP stand for?
B) I live about 12 minutes away but am in London Saturday
C) Ooh, two minutes from the Turf, no sniffing at that

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

A) Fancy a Pint.
B) I do too, I think, at a brisk walk.
C) Wow, Bob that *is* impressive. Speshly if yr not a student.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

He must be a student. There's nowhere non-student in two min. Mark -- it's you playing that trance shit at all hours is it? Next time it won't just be me swearing with words, alright.

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Swearing with pictures?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

aw damn i have just realised i am in london on saturday, i have arranged to meet friends. id definately be up for this another time.

2 minutes might have been an underestimation, but its definately under 5. am i a student here? no comment (public board and all...)

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't tell you in which direction Enrique! And anyway, I would never play trance. Be in a trance, mebbe.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Why all this shyness. Nothing wrong with being a student in Oxford after all.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

take way all the ppl who've been students in Oxford and ilx would be very much the poorer.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

ah you see its just i want plausible deniability in case i ever get questioned by those with authority over me about the strange stuff ive posted on here. unlikely, but still..

but anyway yes, you guys know what i am now. im actually kinda dissapointed that im gonna have to miss this fap. there should be regular oxford faps if theres a few of us around (presuming i don't offend everyone of course)

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it would be improved by the removal of oxford and ex-oxford people

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloody tabs.

Hansel (Enrique), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

care to revise yr answer on the Offensive thread now, Gareth?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What about people who live around Oxford, but too stoopid to be students there? Should we be put in a field and bombed as well?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i shall allow you to live

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know whether I'm too stoopid to have studied here or not. Are you going to make me take a test?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Us stoopid people must stick together. No! The students will test us - we shall display our knowledge of the Sun editorials and Coronation Street, and show how we don't talk about love and only wanna get drunk. And we shall test them on Monty Python, Withnail and I and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, just to see if they REALLY are students.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, oxford, my oxford, i'd be up for this if i wasn't otherwise engaged, i haven't seen jellybean for ages. i hope you all have a nice time.

i hope you've all been to see the candice breitz show at moma, it's closing next week you know...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
it's U&K that there is another OxFAP pronto!!

Greg to thread!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't be able to make it to any FAPs until the end of June, due to locking myself in my flat to study for my exams (nb. this doesn't work as I still have an internet connection in my room, so I spend all my time on the internet instead).

:(

jellybean (jellybean), Saturday, 8 May 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

are you taking a break from gigs as well, Jellybean? I was thinking of going along to Tiger Club/Zea/Persil at the Cellar - seems a quiet month apart from that.

But anyway, yes, let's wait until June. A Saturday afternoon again? AFAIK, i can do every Saturday except the 12th, when I'll be in Glasgow.

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 9 May 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. sort of. That Tiger Club one it's my last gig for a while (apart from maybe the Shit the next night - but both of those are kinda for work). Come down for that, there's another band on that bill that sounds quite intriguing.. a band of an ex MBICR and ex Ben and Jason (apparently).

It's annoying that I have to stop going out around now.. when everyone's coming to play.. PJ Harvey, The Killers, Graham Coxon. grrrr

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 9 May 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Tothreaded! Rah rah, etc.

I would like this to happen.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 9 May 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

will you be staying in Oxford over the summer, Greg?

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 15 May 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)
