Bugga! I uninstalled and reinstalled my modem, now my keyboard has forgotten how to speak French ie. the keys are all mixed up, theyve gone back to Qwertyiop instead of Azertyuiop, which I was just getting used to. Its also telling me my soundcard isnt installed, which is a real bummer cos I dont know and cant find out which kind I got. Do I need new drivers if so for what? Can anyone help me?

If you're using Windows you should be able to change the keyboard language back via Setting/Control Panel/Keyboard/Language.

Do you have any discs or CDs that came with your computer? There should be a soundcard driver on one of those discs.

When you say "uninstalled and reinstalled my modem" do you mean you took it out and then replaced the same one? Or put in a new one? Or did you just uninstall and reinstall the software? If you physically took it out, did you put it back in exactly the same place? If it's in the same place but it's a different modem, you may have a modem that's requesting the same IRQ as your soundcard, which could be causing the problem, especially if you're on an older system.

Er, I uninstalled and reinstalled my modem software, but not the physical thing. Unfortunately I don't have the drivers and can't contact the guy who made me the computer. Are there any generic sound card drivers or anything like that? I'm a bit dim as regards these things.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

there aren't really generic drivers for sound cards per se, though windows xp should be able to I.d. most cards and autoinstall the drivers. if you're ont on xp you may have to crack open your case to see exactly what model of soundcard you have, and then go to that company's site to download the appropriate driver. if your audio is built right onto the motherboard, you get the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer site, under the drivers FOR THAT MOBO so make sure you check on the board for something that looks like a model number.

I've now opened my pc and looked at what I'm told is my sound card, (the thing that the speaker wires lead into) but there is no information on the back of it. I wrote down some of the things it said on the wire leading into it (it's a small yellow box with AMCO written on it) and they led me to a site for an electronic cable company. Doh! I can see loads of things written on the motherboard, but nothing that looks like it might lead somewhere.

I really have no idea what to do. I mean, shouldn't the drivers already be installed on my system somewhere? Is it possible to locate them? It was all working fine 'til I reinstalled the operating system, ho hum....

Unfortunately, when you reinstall the operating system, it tends to wipe out any of the drivers that were previously installed, unless they were manually saved to some other directory by the person who put together the system for you. Unless you're willing to remove the soundcard physically so that you can see all of the stuff written on it (usually the information you need is on the side that faces downward by the way) you'll probably have to redouble your efforts contacting your friend, or hire a geek to come over and look at it for you.

what operating system are you using?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

control panel-->system properties--->sound, video, video game controllers

should list your drivers by name, google the name of it, and likely you'll be able to download a driver.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 27 October 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

sometimes even if you doubleclick on the driver name it will let you automatically update it. Above is for windows 98 but it should be similar for windows XP.

If the operating system has been reinstalled though, it's probably just sitting there as an exclamation point, with "unknown device" or somesuch, though. Worth checking, though, just to be sure the OS didn't already recognize the driver and just can't initialize it.

Thanks for your help!

I'm using Windows ME. The system says that it is a 'PCI Multimedia Audio Device', but says there's no driver installed. I thought at first that this was justa generic name for the card, but having done some research I'm not so sure. I'm trying various drivers for common sound cards, but still no luck...

Thanks to all your help, I have solved the problem! I simply looked up the manufacturer of the motherboard in System Info, went to their website and got the first driver for ME that I could find AND VOILA! Thanks again ILE peeps.
