Hey, fuck Ohio, right?

I'm from there, I just wanna see if anyone can put up a decent argument, besides it being the origin of Tracy Lords and Dean Martin (both from Steubenville, my hometown).

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, fuck it and etc.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Dead Boys, Pere Ubu, and Devo came from Ohio. All that comes from Iowa (where I grew up) is Tom Arnold and a bunch of meth labs.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I love OHIO.

Screamin Jay, Jim Jarmusch, Dj HiTek, and Cedar Point. Yay!

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in Iowa now (and will be for a few more years) and it's not that bad, really.

Prude (Prude), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

What part, though?

I can say with confidence that if I still lived there now I would be pregnant, Goth, and addicted to hard drugs.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I am leaving Iowa soon and I will miss it. I have personal reasons to want Ohio erased.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Where you headed, J0hn?

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in Iowa City, which, from what I gather, is considerably more liberal/hip/urban than most of the rest of the state. I'm from the east coast, so I really can't say whether or not this is true.

Prude (Prude), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck, I forgot (in my Makers Mark/Guiness delerium) all bout DEVO and Dead Boys. The Mothersbaugh's sister lives across the street from my aunt in Cuyahoga Falls. Back in 96 whe I was visiting relatives I knocked on her door but no one was home.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It is, Prude. I'm from rural NW Iowa and it's horrible, horrible, horrible. Makes sucky suburban Illinois seem like a gangsta's paradise.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Sunday, 26 October 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yikes. I drove out here from New Jersey this summer, and I really enjoyed all the farms and corn. I could see how the charm would wear off real quick if you grew up here, though.

Prude (Prude), Sunday, 26 October 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, where in rural NW Iowa? (I know someone else from Hardy.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 26 October 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Clay and Palo Alto county.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Sunday, 26 October 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to agree with you about this place Helltime, i hate it here too. I spend as much time as possible in Pgh, tho that's getting to be old hat as well...

Phil Dokes (sunny), Sunday, 26 October 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Pgh, eh, you ever met Mike Siciliano of the Roboto Project crowd? I played bass for one of his bands once.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 26 October 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

No, afraid not. Oh, and you forgot the other key figure i like to point out to people passing thru of the statue at the courthouse Edwin Stanton, long rumored to be part of a possible conspiracy to kill Lincoln back in the day...

...ahhh, only the best and the brightest!

Phil Dokes (sunny), Sunday, 26 October 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

In Seubenville OH there's a statue of Stanton in front of the county court house, and you can fit a 40oz in his open hand. Thus the Josta Baby lyric "Edwin Stanton can hold a forty once, and the S-H-S band knows how to bounce."

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 26 October 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to Steubenville on a business trip once. Post-apocalyptic, or maybe apocalypse right now. But other parts of the state are rather pretty.

Skottie, Sunday, 26 October 2003 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

on the roadtrip, we went from boston to st. louis all in one big stretch. we stopped every few hours for food or gas, except in ohio. my passenger hates ohio so much that he insisted we stock up and just drive through.

and when we drove through columbus, he insisted we play 'hail to the victors' really loud on repeat. i think this kind of school rivalry is a bit extreme, but he claimed it was more than just that...

colette (a2lette), Sunday, 26 October 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

my brother lived in stuebenville for 5 years, but this still doesnt explain...him

they got out of there when the kids were getting elementary school age. didn't want to send them to Xian school either, or they'd have all sorts of identity problems

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 October 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

and when we drove through columbus, he insisted we play 'hail to the victors' really loud on repeat

Haha!! This is great. ...you mean he actually brought along a recording of the song for this?!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 27 October 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, no! there are a lot of shithole towns in ohio, steubenville definitely being one of them, but there are shithole towns everywhere. cleveland and some surrounding areas are kind of awesome, and of course there are all of the amazing bands that came out of akron/cle.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 27 October 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I [heart] Sinsinatuh!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 27 October 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

mr. d, the short answer is yes.

the long and embarrassing answer is that we both did. i created a *lot* of mix cd's for the trip, i think it was 13 overall, each based on where we were. for the last CD, 'hail to the victors' said 'home' as much if not more than 'i've got a gal in kalamazoo'...

colette (a2lette), Monday, 27 October 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you like chillies in Ohio?

fletrejet, Monday, 27 October 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracy Lords is pretty awesome but really I don't remember anything about Ohio. I only drove through it. It seemed pretty shit but so did a lot of those states, I might be confusing it with Indiana.

Allyzay, Monday, 27 October 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i live in the Paris of Cuyahoga County and can say without reservation that it's ok

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 27 October 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Akron is great because I was born there.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 October 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Indiana, Ohio, driving on interstates across these states = you can be lulled to sleep at the wheel by the complete lack of ANYTHING ANYWHERE, nap for 10 minutes, wake up, and still be in your lane. God bless (boring, flat) America!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 27 October 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

your next president will be from Ohio

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 27 October 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ohio > Indiana (the northern part anyway). I drove through Akron looking for a place to buy a tire in July and I thought it was lovely. Couldn't find a place to buy a cheap tire anywhere, but it was pretty and I saw dueling blimps. Ended up in Youngstown where I found a WalMart which was CHOCK FULL O' REDNECKS!!! Fantastic! Nice place to visit...

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 27 October 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

wait a minute, you couldn't find a place to buy a tire in AKRON OMG WTF!11!!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was wondering at that, too.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

There is Cedar Point, so Ohio isn't hateable.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Just did the Ohio/Indiana drive again this past weekend, it was nicer than the first time due to more fall colors, but still quite dull. But Ohio seems like a decent enoug place, like a dull but trustworthy friend who is always there for you.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone I know from Columbus (quite a few people) is a total champ.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

No no, I didn't say I couldn't find a place to buy a tire, I just couldn't find a place to buy a cheap tire. It was actually late enough in the day on the 3rd where a lot of places were already closing. I did say out loud to myself while driving (I was nearly delerious when I was there) DON'T THEY FUCKING MAKE TIRES HERE?!?!?! OMG WTF LOL!!!! (or whatever...).

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a speeding ticket in Ohio this trip. My first speeding ticket ever - and I was only going 81 in a 65!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing is with Ohio is that it's a big open k-boring state, but Cleaveland & Sinsinattuh = DEFINITELY NOT BORING and kinda have a lot of freaky classist/racist tension & shit going on.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

they hate speeders in ohio, i will give you that. people occasionally complain that i don't exceed posted limits enough when i drive, but i was traumatized as a teen by being ticketed in cleveland heights for going 31 in a 25. wtf? even my parents were like, "it's okay, honey. don't worry about it"!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Cleveland Heights!

I got a ticket there because my front license plate was tilted at an angle. Not to mention the bazillion parking tickets. They got you either way- moving or standing still.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Them Wranch is from Ohio. Was from Ohio. I like them a lot.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

lk, did you ever see that cartoon in the free times about the differences between east/west side cleveland that culminated with a hapless westsider lost forever in the twisty maze of streets around university circle, hundreds of cleveland heights parking tickets stuffed under his windshield?

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ohio gives this country everything! Porn, rubber, lounge singers, punk rock etc All we ask in return is that you pay your speeding tickets in a timely manner.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

lauren

yep. they nailed it.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

at this point i am owed some sort of certificate for funding god knows how many public works projects for the city of cleveland heights. the amount of $8 parking meter violations that mutated into $72 fines because i let the the tickets moulder in my glove compartment is staggering and sick-making. after i moved away, my dad sent me an old one he found under the floor mat while cleaning out my car!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I read a while back that they had to have an amnesty program (like just pay ten or twenty bucks and we'll wipe your record clean) because they had issued so many tickets that their computer system couldn't handle it.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 27 October 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The NYT published an interesting review of this book today: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393057399/qid=1137366698/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/104-7301596-1456723?n=507846&s=books&v=glance which deals partly with Akron:

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 15 January 2006 23:20 (twenty years ago)

My brother-in-law knows a dude who supposedly has a tattoo of Alan Thicke (of Growing Pains fame) with a comic-strip word balloon that says "Fuck Ohio". When asked about this his only explanation was that he loves Alan Thicke and hates Ohio.

joygoat (joygoat), Monday, 16 January 2006 03:01 (twenty years ago)

The NYT published an interesting review of this book today:

the book is by luc sante's wife! they live in kingston, a really cute town about 10 miles away from woodstock.

danielle the animal steel (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 16 January 2006 03:23 (twenty years ago)

Although I share in her lament, I'm not sure why I would want to read a book about it.

nine months pass...
Congratulations to Ohio and all its supporters.

the pinefox (the pinefox), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

Ohio seems to have deeply hated its state GOP, but that did not extend sufficiently to the national GOP. it was the biggest disappointment last night.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

though I dunno what kind of a vote Brown got in the 1st, 2nd, 12th and 15th - maybe ticket-splitting gave the Rep.s the edge

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh - I heard Ohio was a great victory over the bad people. Perhaps your electoral system, or our media, has confused me.

the pinefox (the pinefox), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 16:18 (six years ago)

What a bunch of butthole legislators

Let me tell you: When you sit down with the person who is supposed to represent you and tell him the most painful story of your life, and he’s looking at his phone and not the tears running down your face, it starts to feel a little hopeless.

There was a moment with my own state senator, Republican Andrew Brenner, when he mentioned something about, “That’s why I believe in guns and safety.” And I said, “I was a child. You don't fix a child being raped by giving that child a gun. That’s so dumb.”

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 16:30 (six years ago)

Ohio is Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati surrounded by Alabama tbrr

Plinka Trinka Banga Tink (Eliza D.), Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:24 (six years ago)

Akron is ok too
The rest of it can eat shit

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:27 (six years ago)

What a ridiculous sentence

“That’s why I believe in guns and safety.”

"That's why I believe in evolution and creationism."

One Eye Open, Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:29 (six years ago)

I like a lot of people from Ohio, but they all left Ohio.

These anti-choice people don't care except where they can leverage power and money. It doesn't matter what reason one gives and I wish we would stop even trying to justify it like it's not inherent for women to retain their autonomy. I get lightheaded every time I think about being forced to carry a pregnancy to term and give birth.

Yerac, Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:37 (six years ago)

This girl was raped by HER BROTHER for years and these pieces of shit are looking at their phones while she's talking to them?

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck Ohio Republican legislators. I have a huge amount of personal investment in the topic of Ohio legislators and the people on the R side can all eat shit; the handful of people remaining on the D side are heroes.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:49 (six years ago)

this woman in particular is completely awesome
she's the AOC of Northeast OH
https://twitter.com/EmiliaSykesOH

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:53 (six years ago)

There is nothing in me to believe they would care who it was or what the circumstances are. They treat women like shit because that is how they view them.

Yerac, Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:56 (six years ago)

I KNOW

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:57 (six years ago)

I grew up there

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:57 (six years ago)

I was treated like garbage there and then I left

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 17:57 (six years ago)

The veins of Ohio are also coursing with white supremacist sentiment and for that too it must eat shit.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 18:02 (six years ago)

I want to post a lot of things but it is all probably too violent imagery for a messageboard.

Yerac, Thursday, 23 May 2019 18:10 (six years ago)

you have no idea how much i am holding my tongue
it actually makes me feel worse to get super heated about it so i try to moderate for my own health

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 18:13 (six years ago)

i never in my life thought i would say "fuck Ohio" but this fucking guy with his phone sent me over the edge.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2019 18:17 (six years ago)

like, i know it's on a different scale from what we're talking about, but just to take it down a notch i was reading about ohio valley pizza yesterday

i have relatives in ohio and i dearly wish they'd move, there's no hope left there, fuck it goddamn georgia is better than ohio at this point

whenever i read about the midwest i keep thinking about how south korean and north korean people had basically identical ways of life until like the 1980s. this isn't heading anywhere good, get out while you can.
