RS "Women Who Rock"/Sleater-Kinney

Was it really necessary to make the Sleater-Kinney article in Rolling Stone's "Women Who Rock" issue primarily about how they used to be a couple? What a waste.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 26 October 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

quite. but would you say the same thing re White Stripes, e.g.?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 26 October 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought it was interesting, seeing as it's the one thing C + C NEVER talk about to the press, usually. maybe the best interview with them i've ever read. cute pictures, too.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 26 October 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The White Stripes thing was part of their mystique - "oh, we're brother and sister - just kidding!" Not as bothersome (though, as an issue, I don't see why anyone cares).

It just seems sensationalistic of a mainstream mag to use an article in a "women who rock" to bring up a same-sex inter-band relationship that has been over for at least five years, and doesn't seem to have any bearing on their current work. Kind of a "Look, Lesbians!" thing.

see as a huge hardcore SK fan I haven't even bothered to read the RS article. I mean I could give a fuck. . .

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 26 October 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the RS article had one VERY interesting thing about them I didn't know: they go to band therapy once a week! Works for them, apparently.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 26 October 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, White Stripes was avowedly a bad example. would you sy the same thing about any other hetero couple? a gay male one?

has been over for at least five years, and doesn't seem to have any bearing on their current work

ok, good point, but some people might take issue with the latter. perhaps it plays a significant role in, among other things, their no-bass-necessary instrumental meshing (inspired by this).

for a band where part of the fascination is watching them grow as individuals, it would seem that their development of a working relationship after another kind of relationship might be interesting.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 26 October 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"primarily" = two paragraphs out of like 20

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 26 October 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

what Matos said.

Also, the issue is still relevant, given the role of relationships in rock music (not to mention sex) and the fact that intra band fraternization is nearly always mentioned in a band bio. And hey, she had a baby and married a dude after she parted ways with Carrie...that's definitely interesting.

But this all overlooks the fact that a Women In Rock issue at RS is totally dumb.

didn't ILM have a whole thread about intraband ruttin', or "shitting where you eat"?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 27 October 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

see also every Fleetwood Mac article ever

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 27 October 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

have just read it, the only thing i liked about this article was the photos - particularly the one of corin in the rara skirt (its so 80s madonna!!), and the stuff about them going to therapy. i wanted to shoot the writer everytime he said the word "punk". (about a hundred times in the first few paragraphs). corin sounds sooooo annoying "i'm such an intellectual" *barf*. "i wanna be your joey ramone" is about two lovers wrestling on a bedroom floor? i thought they were saying "wrecked out on your bedroom floor" - which i believe is the correct lyrics scuse me being sleater-kinney uberfan pedant. JANET OWNZ ME.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

actually there wasn't very much about them being a couple at all.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

you should repost this thread with the word 'lesbians' in the title.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't buy the mag, but the couple angle was more than minor from what I read.

That is, really, a bit worse though, isn't? An article on intra-band relations and their effect on the music v. "oh, yeah, they did it! But Corin's married now!"

er, I think she was joking. both times.

haha more people should end their posts with a various on JANET OWNZ ME.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I had read they were a couple way back when, but had completely forgotten about it, since it isn't brought up much. So then I thought it was just a rumor.

I'm off to lunch and perhaps I'll stop by a bookstore and skim this article.
(*All of ILE waits patiently to hear my thoughts*)

Do they sell this mag in the UK?

mei (mei), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's Rolling Stone, dude...

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

so, um, are there any other female-fronted rock bands besides sleater-kinney in this issue? or are they just filling that slot once again?

maura (maura), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i wondered the same thing. anyone? anyone?

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know, i read the article on one of the library databases.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It had Karen O, but it was mostly solo female artists.

And I liked the article, negatives ppl brought up here did not bother me. (The big photo is real keen!!)

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

what about Distillers and Evanescence (who have been totally growing on me in a scary way)?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 October 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)
