movies about clubbing

What a disappointing film Party Monster was. Wit-free script, dud acting (except for Seth Green, natch), charmless characters, tension-free plot, abysmal clubbing scenes - just outrageously dressed people gurning at the camera. I'm racking my brains trying to think of successful club scenes in films and it isn't easy. Human Traffic left me cold. In fact the only really convincing one (of the top of my head) must be the video of Weekender by Flowered Up. Recreating the buzz of the dancefloor isn't easy. Who's got it right?

Go is the best movie I can think of that would fit this category but it wasn't "about clubbing" per se. Maybe that's why?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 26 October 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

they are all bad

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 26 October 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

24 Hour Party People?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 26 October 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

what about the largely kool-aid-drinking docs? Mutations and I forgot the name of the other good one.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 26 October 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Club La Monde is naff but the clubbing scenes were some of the most realistic i've seen in a film with regards to club culture in the UK. this is partly down to them using real DJs in the film (Mr C, Alex P) and not dressing it up at all so it's fairly honest warts n' all stuff tho not particularly exciting or remotely glamorous.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 26 October 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

24 Hour Party People probably wins considering how they re-made the Hacienda interior and everything specially for the film, got the DJs who played there at the time to be in the scenes - even Gareth is there dancing away and Wilson mistakes him for Ian Curtis.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 26 October 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

right, Better Living Through Circuitry with interviews with, among others, Moby, Lords of Acid, Roni and Reprazent, Frankie Bones, Meat Beat Manifesto, BT, Crystal Method, DJ Spooky, Scanner, Keoki, Carl Cox, far too much of Genesis P-Orridge, and just about enough of a tres hot hippie girl from "Electric Skychurch"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 26 October 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The one with Jason Donovan in it is terrible. I believe it may be called "Sorted" or something awful like that.

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 26 October 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Last Days of Disco was quite good - but a different kind of clubbing.

Fenton Bailey did a documentary on Michael Alig & co maybe 4 years back (also called Party Monster) which is likely to be a lot better than the film.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Sunday, 26 October 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

does the beginning of Blade count?

jones (actual), Sunday, 26 October 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, thats good! tim taylor in the house!

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 26 October 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a movie, and given much love elsewhere on this board, the clubbing episode of Spaced is the mutt's nuts in this respect.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 26 October 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoyed 24-hour party people, too. Stevem, OTM.

Daniel (dancity), Sunday, 26 October 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

morvern callar!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 26 October 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Saturday Night Fever!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 26 October 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Clubland" vapid, B-movie about 80s new wave clubbing

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 27 October 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a little movie called Groove that focuses on a night in a San Francisco club that I like a lot, you can probably find it on video.

There is a great movie to be made centred around the whole Tunnel/Gatien/Alig scenario, but Party Monster wasn't it. The problem is focusing the whole story around Alig, who aside from a few funny quips, outrageous pranks and ridiculous outfits, is too self obsessed to be very interesting. A far better treatment of the subject matter is in Frank Owen's book Clubland Confidential which covers Peter Gatien's life extensively, as well as traces the mafia connections between the Tunnel and Liquid in Miami (the owner of Liquid, Chris Paciello, or even Gatien would be a far more interesting character study than Michael Alig, IMO), and the determination and dirty tricks of Guiliani and the DEA in shutting the Tunnel down, which seems to represent the point in which New York nightlife transformed from Sodom and Gommorah to Disneyland. The book kind of reads like The Sopranos meets a far more debauched Last Days of Disco, I'd love to see someone try and film it.

rkl (rkl), Monday, 27 October 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Was "Loved up" much good? The soundtrack was excellent.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 27 October 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved the scene in xXx where there is a big fight going on and Orbital are on stage which resembles a gigantic Van De Graff Generator.

Films != clubs. So films about clubbing cannot recreate the vibe of being in a club. Silly.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 October 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

what slutsky said

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 October 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

clubbed to death?

or, for total club silliness, dobermann!

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 27 October 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw that film groove but didn't think much of it
human traffic is the film everyone who goes clubbing hates to admit is accurate, because some of it is so shit and the characters are such spas, but some of the little details are spot on,far more so than in any other "clubbing" film i've seen...

robin (robin), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Human Traffic is accurate like Friends is accurate.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Groove is pretty cheesy.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

human traffic makes me sick like ipecac syrup makes me sick

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i have no real problem with Human Traffic

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Morvern Callar
Erm, that episode of 'The Office'

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no problems with "Human Traffic" either.

the club scenes in "Go" are laughable.

"24 Hour Party People" is not a film about clubbing.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot watch 'Go' due to the dawson's creek reject in it.
I thought 24 hour party ppl is great, although it's not about clubbing according to DV.
Also, I love Human Traffic, I just think it is brilliant & pretty spot on, or at least it was in my world when I was partying & taking drugs!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Go is a great film

24HPP is PARTLY about clubbing

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Go is great, agreed.

The Human Traffic = good on clubbing, excruciating on characters (also not a million miles away even with that unfortunately).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

for me Human Traffic's overall stylish execution compensates for some annoying character elements. i can even forgive the National Anthem scene.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'Cruising' was good

dave q, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ambrose got their first with doberman, and clubbed to death for that matter.

Human Traffic is the worst film about clubbing ever.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Katie Holmes has been great in everything I've seen her in (NOTE: I have only seen Go).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

she is not even the best thing in that movie by a long chalk tho!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Never said she was the best thing in that movie!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

She is good & slutty in Wonder Boys.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i know Dan, i was just saying!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i may end every post with an exclamation mark for the rest of the day now!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, it works for me!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

in terms of getting the right *vibe* of clubbing/dancing in clubs, it has to be the whole club sequence in 'city of god'. i didn't think much of the fillum overall but that section is very real and cool and good and accurate.

still *love* human traffic too though.

also 'loved up' the bbc film from 92.

the fact that there have been so few clubbing scenes *at all* since
the late 80's in british movies, the fact that a music video from 11 years ago is thought to be the best representation of clubbing, the fact that 'quadrophenia' is held up in some quarters as the best youth movie ever made...well all these things say oh so very much about the uk movie game.

who's seen the kerrigan movie *after* human traffic ? anyone ?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the short film 'Coming Down' is the most OTM although as the title suggests it deals more with the aftermath of a big night out clubbing rather than the clubbing itself. i don't remember the specifics but at the end they're sat on Primrose Hill watching the sunrise and D*Note's 'Lost And Found' is playing.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

was loved up in liverpool and had gat decor passion as the music?

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Human Traffic, half decent on peripherals of clubbing if over romantic, crap on actual clubbing scenes.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

yes charlston i think so

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw the follow up to human traffic,it was crap but enjoyable as far as i can recall

robin (robin), Thursday, 30 October 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
there haven't been any more have there?

how come WEEKENDER isnt out on dvd?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

what the hell is this 'Its all gone Pete Tong' all about then?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

24 hr party people has clubbing scenes in it, but isn't about clubbing

props for ambrose to have mentioned clubbed to death. I loved that film.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

'It's All Gone Pete Tong' is about a mythical superstar DJ who goes mad with the hedonism and disappears. Can't be good.

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

I've heard good reports about it, I'm unconvinced.

Not a movie, but there's a cinema documenatary about Detroit Techno coming soon :

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

The correct answer is the clubbing episode of Spaced - through satire comes the truth.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Props to Piceas for Loved Up too.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

and isn't a movie.

xpost

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

The amount of times I've caught myself nodding my head in time to a random repetitive noise à la Tyres in Spaced the "day after" makes that episode for me.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

"Katie Holmes has been great in everything I've seen her in "

Tom Cruise replies: Yes, even nude.

har har.

nathalie in a bar under the sea (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

whats the name of that dutch gabber movie again

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
"It's all gone Pete Tong" is great, much better and funnier than I thought it would be. And classic probably for this deadpan line... "Generally, the field of music, well, besides the obvious example, have been dominated by people who can hear."
