The Mondrian Dress

Modelled by the members of Shonen Knife at their Knitting Factory gig, made by their drummer-turned-bassist, and shown here. A short shift, worn loose, with black pants and black sneakers.

Worn by my Blythe, and the inferior Petite Blythe. A short shift, worn with the option of red belting, over white pants, with red go-go boots.

Created by YSL in 1965; inspired by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. A longer sheath, worn loose over black tights, with black flats.

Where can I get?

Also discuss other Op-Art inspired fashion, if you like.

I saw a big Mondrian exhibit in NYC several years ago. I only liked the big blocky constructions. The busier ones seemed less sophisticated. But everything seemed sad because a lot of the white fields had yellowed. They objects weren't aging well. Made it all seem rather tawdry, for Piet's sake.

There are some good images of Mondrian clothes here and here.

I'd give my left arm for the YSL dress; they're probably all in museums by now though.

MOMA should do something useful for once and market this dress. But, they would probably screw it up and offer it in a silky chiffon.
