What with winter drawing in and the nights getting colder I find myself looking forward to hearty winter style meals followed by hot desserts. Anyway I would quite fancy making a hearty winter stew with dumplings, but don't really know how, anyone got any ideas? I have had a look at a few receipies but am not convinced.

I need to get my friend Emma's recipe for Winter Root Soup because it is one of the *yummiest* things in the history of food.

But I need the fat to keep me warm during those long cold Wiltshire Winters!

Rabbit braised in red wine like me and Jonnie had last night with sauteed potatoes, absolute Autumn delight. De-glazing the pan with calvados helped too, as did the huge great lump of poitrine.

This is the season of the big jumper and the chocolate bar. Lo-cal can wait until after Jan 1st.

the chocolate bar should ideally match the jumper in size

Portuguese casserole of cod, garlic, onions, potatoes with lots of fresh crusty bread, olive oil and a nice heavy red wine. While it's snowing outside.

Apple crumble topped with warm custard. Give me a large bowl of this, and I'd purr....

Garlic & shallots & a couple colorful veggies (like peppers & squash) saute'd for a bit + anywhere from 2 to 11 types of beans, plus whatever floats my boat that day (often curry or chili varieties).

Is "nein Socken" your real name?

Does it mean "no socks"?

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

I thought it meant "No Hitting"? But for winter food, risotto made with white wine and yams or squash, pot roast braised all day in red wine with egg noodles, and a big vat of bean soup with fresh hot corn bread = Yes, please!

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

no socks, correct. it's not my real name, i'm not german.

i imagine "sloppy joes" are good in winter, but i haven't had one since elementary school hot lunch.

also banana walnut bread.
