London Film Festival: Glasto for Glasses-Wearers

Seriously knackering occupation, 'doing' this fest if you don't live in London. Why was Pen-Ek's new film scheduled for 11.15 on Friday night and at no other time? Why was the Red Bus then packed with unspeakable rowdy bastards?

It was worth it of course.

Other front-line reportage (and Heat-style 'Spotted' bits) welcome.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread reminds me I must go to see Spellbound PDQ.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was on earlier, after Rise?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No, that's Bewitched. (Get a loife).

I refuse to do the London Film Festival for absolutely no sane reason at all.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah yeah, that's right. Spellbound's the crazy Dali thing. Pete -- it's a bit crap because there's nowhere to hang out. And some of the films are basically Leicester Sq premiere stuff. But some of 'em won't get released.

I saw one which I can only call 'Dermot O'Leary in a Danish 'Sliding Doors'' -- called 'Reconstruction'. Pas mal.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to do the LFF, but was cured of it by watching angelheart at 10.oo on a sunday morning - it nearly cured my will to live, also

mark s (mark s), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Hope you got in free!

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

It does need a decent central hang out a la the Dublin Film bar. The only film i was really keen on seeing was Casa De Loas Babys last week cos I know it hasn't got a distribution deal and I love John Sayles. Resurretcion Of The Little Match Girl at the NFT this afternoon tempts but I am at work.

I looked at everything I really fancied in the programme and nearly everything else had a distribution deal. I like seeing the Surprise Film, more for the experience but my ticket ain't through yet.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 October 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but it's kewl to see stuff early, no?

'Dogville' was out in Paris in June.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll try and catch a few movies. don't know which tho'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, I'll see them when everyone else I know see's 'em. Then I can talk about them. Which reminds me...

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

FAPS are usually Glastos for Glasses-Wearers.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to glasto wearing glasses and had all my shit nicked by Thurssday night. As aspirant 'lancer, I gotta see em early so as to pitch...

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Lancing boils is a bad idea.

Have I misunderstood?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really, it's about as enjoyable.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to 10 or 12 last year: a couple were things I could have seen with friends a few months later, with more options as to when and where, and the rest were subtitled. Given my eye troubles of late, I didn't bother even reading the brochure they mailed me this year.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 27 October 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Scarlett Johanssen -- so hot right now. Scarlett Johanssen

The one film I couldnae get ticket for was the much hyped 'Lost in Translation'. I wasn't too miffed, cos it's 100% certain to get a wide distribution. I enjoyed Sofia Coppola's 'Virgin Suicides' though it's no 'Crazy/Beautiful'. And I enjoyed 'Ghost World'.

But what's the big deal about SJ? Anyone see it?

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a LiT thread. It is out in January over here.

Just check the brochure for films with distribution, if it says courtsey of Pathe (etc etc) then you know it will limp out some time in the next year. The worst ones are films like In the Cut and Seabiscuit that premiere in the festival and then open wide TWO DAYS LATER.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed, that's just promotion. Still, some of those films will only open in London (fer example, 'At Five in the Afternoon', what I saw yesterday), not elsewhere, and one I saw hadn't yet got distribution ('Reconstruction') and it's nice to see the directors. Although Q&As can be *the* most excrutiating things.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved the Q&A for Stigmata a couple of years ago. Emma had to drag me out of the cinema to stop me asking "Why did you make such a bad film".

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Gaspar Noe after 'Irreversible' -- it was flippin' intense. Old Skool feminist posse was frontin'.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, this fest's off the hook baby!!

Alright: to report: 'Good Morning Night', Marco 'Fists in the Pockets' Bellocchio's film about the 1978 kidnapping and execution of ranking Christian Democrat Aldo Moro by the Red Brigade = screaming out for multiples domination. K-classic consideration of humanist vs materialist Marxism. 'Together' meets 'Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment' meets 'Panic Room'. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Even its use of Pink Floyd is good.

French film by Jean-Marc Moutout, his feature debut, 'Work Hard, Play Hard', is more modest tale of callow management consultant which nontheless pisses down Oliver Stone's throat. There's humour, but this ain't 'The Office': this is an indictment of the profit motive and the society that lives and dies by it. Nicely done. It isn't out in France yet, but it should be a pip, as John Goodman says in 'Barton Fink'. 'Resources Humaine' meets 'Late August, Early September'.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 3 November 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to see some Experimenta last night. A very mixed bunch, but surely this kind of thing makes the LFF worthwhile. The bloke who introduced the programme was a certain Mark with a Yorkshire accent, possibly the Mark out of Pulp. He was so smug and cliquey that I was tempted to walk out there and then and go and see something like Seabiscuit instead. I saw loads more LFF last year and the year before, but only one visit this year for a series of dull reasons I won't bore you with.

Daniel (dancity), Monday, 3 November 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Favourite Film Festival moment: Hmmmf, phrrrrf, tut, how can you leave during the film? - the question asked by an old-ish man with thick film-buff glasses and a luxuriant moustache to a woman who got up to leave DURING THE CLOSING CREDITS. Great.

Daniel (dancity), Monday, 3 November 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I appear to have forgotten about Spellbound. GROAN.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 3 November 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that'll be the Pulp guy, he quite often programs stuff at the ICA.

I hear Spellbound is vg.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 3 November 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh it's on in Brixton tonight at 9.00. I might have a pop along and go to the cinema BY MYSELF for the first time in yonks (unless of course I can con any of you mentalists to pop along that is). Fancy it?

Sarah (starry), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

attention fans of battle royale:

sistrah becky sez that battle royale II is v.terrible and long and disappointing - during some particularly sententious speech late on, someone in the nft audience blew a raspberry and everyone in the whole theatre burst out laughing delightedly

mark s (mark s), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

If it was him this wouldn't surprise me, he went to my school and thought he was better than everyone else then, lucking out and joining Pulp can only have added to that methinks.

chris (chris), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ANyone know what the surprise film was?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Belated bet: Cold Mountain?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

MarkoutofPulp addressed certain audience members by name and said things like 'some people are worried by films with no sound', with a slimy smile. He may as well have said 'some useless people even like plots, characterisation and good acting, ha ha'.

Daniel (dancity), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Sayles has no distribution? Fucking shock horrah.

Mark Webber's 'curations' at the ICA have been pretty good and quite accessible. Unless he was blatantly sucking up to Ph!lip D0dd in the talk I don't see what's wrong with acknowledging people in the audience who are acquaintances and/or capable of helping the talk along. If you've ever had to give one of these talks, which I have, you'll know that they can be quite nerve-wracking and any audience serendipity/participation is a big boon.

Not going to the LFF this year but am going to lots of the press screenings as and when. Enrique, if you are a budding freelance, try to get yourself on the mailouts from film PR companies like McDonald and Rutter or Metro-Tartan or any of the others who spam me 10 times a day.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i tht enrique said 'even if its use of pink floyd was good' which in context ws read as the best sentence ever!

David. (Cozen), Monday, 3 November 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Suzy -- yeah I oughta, kind of. I do reviews already, am just lazy on sorting out early screenings 4 features.

It was the openiong of 'Shine On U Crazee Diamond'. Bloke in front did air-drums. Seriously hot film tho.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 3 November 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh YEAAH!!! It's taking off!

Bertolucci's 'The Dreamers' out soon: K-Klassic to power of K.

Henry from 'Dawson's Creek' stars as an American student in Paris in 1968. Lovely film, lots of clips from others too, almost cried at use of Bob Dylan, weirdly. Plenty of what you'd expect from Bernardo: camera moves, communism, cinephilia, Godard worship/lack-of-worshipincest, erm...

My fave movie of the year, but it is a (series) of pet subjects pour moi. Lovely feelgood stuff, very poignant.

'It's All About Love' -- Vinterberg's ill-starred follow-up to 'Festen'. Hmmm -- maddest film of the year, no idea if it's good. Terrible Polish accents, grebt style, confused substance. Elicits titters, but is all good fun and Claire Danes is lovely (as is wackeen feenix) so yer know, defo better than the matirx (probably). Not as good as festen tho.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I FORGOT AGAIN!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

surprise filum was School of Rock, which mrs carsmile enjoyed immensely. i went to see "The Mighty Wind" (ie the folk spinal tap), it was good and harvey williams was there.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim McInnery aka Captain Darling was at TWO screenings I went to AND something at the NFT this summer. Not majorly Heatish, but hell. Perhaps he was contempo of either Sinker or Carlin at Oxbridge, like Hague?

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched Caddyshack on Sunday - pure genius

(admittedly this was at home but hey, I can drink there and lie on the sofa - maybe reclined cinemas are the way forward)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello. I went to see Pieces of April last night, and it was pretty good, in that "cute little indie film" kinda way. I didn't realise it had Katie Holmes in it until I saw the credits, which much say something (she played the lead). The writer/director, Peter Hedges, did a little Q&A afterwards and seemed just as cuddly as his film. Also Stephin Merritt did the soundtrack, which was rad. I hope Katie Holmes has bought all her trendster mates "69 Love Songs" as a result.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Barry Lasagne

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

*did they show that medem basque one yet btw*

Yes, 26th and 27th October.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

Anyone going to this? This is my first year with press accreditation (had industry last year), and it's predictably been quite a blast.

Best film I've seen so far: Martha Marcy May Marlene.

Davek (davek_00), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

do u wear glasses tho

nakhchivan, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 15:22 (fourteen years ago)
