Are Americans too sentimental about "love of country"?

Is there a point at which love of country goes over board and becomes useless effort? (Inspired by King of the Hill's hotdog eating champoinship episode). You would never hear people who get choked -up about seeing teh stars and stripes on a blad eagle's back getting choked-up about how nice Canada's health care system is.

Who knows what actual Americans are like? The ones on TV are definitely too sentimental, but the same goes fer all the Brits on TV too.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. that is how they get away with doing things like invading other countries.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 27 October 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to recall, during the first hours of SHOCK AND AWE, Rumsfeld wept openly. That sentimental old fart.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 October 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

is this a trick question?
too sentimental over coin tosses also

kephm, Monday, 27 October 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

We get all sentimental about reminding the rest of the world that we are not yanks.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 27 October 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: self-satisfied pride vs. making a difference

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 October 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

wtf - why are canucks posting most the answers here¿

dyson (dyson), Monday, 27 October 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

because Americans suck, yo! and they need to be put in their place by a truly manly culture like Canada.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 October 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes spank me you saucy hoser.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 27 October 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not manly.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 27 October 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

In my perfect world, sentiment should always be viewed with suspicion.

For the record, the Japanese always win our hot dog eating contests. And we are okay with that, because we prize magical eaters.

scott seward, Monday, 27 October 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

my good sir, there are feats that should be prized REGARDLESS of nationality.

Eating hot dogs, climing Mt Everest, the escapades of Jasmine St Claire, etc.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know who Jasmine St. Claire is, but I imagine she's a porn star.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know who Mt. Everest is...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

good lord Horace, is your WHOLE country this backward? Mt Everest once established the record for number of climbers at a gangclimb.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think most of the people I know were more sentimental about John Ritter dying than they are about their patriotism.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if the autopsy showed that John Ritter choked to death on the American flag.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

they need to be put in their place by a truly manly culture like Canada.

This is like any number of my ex-bfs, who were clearly and obviously GAY GAY GAY to anyone who saw them but who insisted that they "weren't all that femme" and that they "passed".

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris DOES understand Canada.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Meanwhile Mount Logan is still awaiting its first mount! Poor lonely virginal mountian.
We are so manly, we don't mind Pansy Division singing the song Manada.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

But... but it's an awful song! Have a little pride!

One of my side project bands (that still hasn't really gone anywhere) kinda defined itself as "we're like Pansy Division if they were any good".

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 October 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I still remeber when they called Sloan cocksuckers in Halifax. The resulting outrage was quite amusing, the exact reaction they wanted.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 27 October 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

would it have been different if they'd called them cocksuckers in Antigonish?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 October 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

If my band calls Pansy Division "cocksuckers" when we play Edmonton, I just don't think it'll be the same.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 October 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace, it would have been very different.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 27 October 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

what's wrong with smoking ONE cigarette ONE time a day? huh? that would be all right.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 October 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if that cigarette had a load in it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 October 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)
