What is the Korean children's game similar to Rock, Paper Scissors BUT....

it begins fairly innocent enough with the slapping of one's hands but quickly escalates into the slapping of one's face!!!

Caveat! I think there is a straight Korean (and Japanese) version of Rock Paper Scissors but this particular version is much more dramatic!

You must help me remember this game! Name and rules are requisite!

This won't help much, but the Chinese have a game called Jiang Dao, She To, Bu, which translated is "Scissors, Rock, Paper," and has identical rules to what we all know and love.

xpost & lots of google garbage w/gygax

as far as I know kawi bawi bo is exactly the same as our RPS, the slapping probably just comes about because Koreans like to beat each other up a lot!

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

no no no... this is a very ordered version.

from what i remember (12-13 years ago):

it begins with the simple RPS and with additional rounds becomes like a slappy hand game ESCALATING until the loser of the earlier rounds holding his/her hands to the sides of his/her cheeks (facial, not glutes). the winner of the previous rounds has both of their hands held about a foot off of the loser's cheeks/hands. the loser has to guess what hand of their opponent they will be slapped with and must drop the other hand. if they guess right, the slap is averted with a block. if they guess wrong, they get slapped and lose the game.

i was told this game was "kai bai bo", a children's game popular in korea. i never played but i watched two full games one afternoon between two dormmates.

In Japan, it's called janken. Rock paper scissors in jan ken pon. The variation is that (I think maybe when you tie) both people can move their hand in a sweeping motion, and if either person's eyes falter to look at the sweep, they lose. The loser can be hit on the head by the winner. Funny words are said at this point but it all sounds like Mwash muhsy mouh to me.

Mary, do you remember the order of the game's levels?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, gy, they lost me once they started giggling and slapping each other on the head.

"Jan ken pon" is incidentally followed by "ai ko desho" (spelling ?) if the jan ken pon results in a draw. The Ai ko deshos are repeated ad infinitum until there is a winner. Little children who have yet to even start to master reading have a bizarre ability to do this at a speed way beyond my capability.

darren (darren), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ai ko desho"! Yes, thank you!

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)
