Do you know Dave? (US: Do you know Bob?)

Round here Dave is a really common name and I can't imagine anyone _not_ knowing someone called Dave (or David, the un-abbreviated version).

Do any Brits not know someone called Dave?

US swap 'Dave' for 'Bob' and everyone, Dave Q doesn't count for these purposes.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Me I know loads of Dave and, this being Wales, more than one Dai too :-)

mei (mei), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

my crystal palace has been shattered. i thought everyone in Great Britain was named Dave Kendall. (HERE ON ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY MINUTES!)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Dave and/or David is a far more common name in the US than Bob is. I know at least three Dave/Davids and no Bobs at all.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought everyone in Great Britain was named Dave Kendall

Don't be ridiculous. Half of them are named Nigel.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I know 6 Daves and 9 Bobs. I win!

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The most British name I can think of is Nigel Dai MacWiffington-Smythe.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

...the third.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha yes, Nigel Dai MacWiffington-Smythe III (esq).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

In Canada, we're called both Bob and Dave.

http://www.youhoser.com/pics/doug.jpg
that's Doug actually.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

How did you guys find out RJG's real name?!?!?!

Allyzay, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I definitely know more Daves. They are the Daves that I know.

Of course, I live in the Southern United States. All of our Bobs are named Robby.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I have two uncles named dave and bob! (and they both go by those abbreviated forms, too.)

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

huh!

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, I didn't know you were reading this one. Kisses!

Allyzay, Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I've spoken to 3 Daves, 2 Bobs, and 4 Nicks today; although one of those 'Bob's is actually 'Bobbi' who is a woman.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I know 34 people called Tom. My life is ruled by the power of Tom.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Mikes ruled the roost at my elementary school

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I know one Bob. Rob is far more common, in my experience.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had crushes on 4 Daves and 1 Bob!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

whilst as an undergrad, we knew so many Daves that we just began referring to then by their last names.

and my middle name is david, too.

also, i know more Matts & Bens than i do Bobs.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I know several Mikes as well, many Marks, quite a few Bryans (both Bryan and Brian), and more Joes than you could shake a stick at.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No Bobs but many, many Daves (these are the Daves I know I know, these are the Daves I know...). Far too many in fact.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I only know one Bob, I think - Bob Wills he is, in fact, but he doesn't play the fiddle. I know a few Rob/Roberts. My oldest friend is a Dave, and I know a few Davids.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I know one Bob and she's called Rebecca.

David. (Cozen), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know any Bobs, but my dad is David - never goes by Dave though.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

whilst as an undergrad, we knew so many Daves that we just began referring to then by their last names.

Insert the name "Matt" here and this was me.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The most British name I can think of is Nigel Dai MacWiffington-Smythe.

Didn't know you knew him too, Dan. He gets around, lucky sod.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a right top chap, that Nigel. 23 skiddo, what?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Poke his monocle back in his eye; blind as a bat, otherwise.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, did anyone in the UK ever actually say "23 skiddoo"? I think someone made that up as a practical joke on Americans.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

That used to be on Hee Haw, I think. Brits are too smart to say that, and get kicked for it.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, did anyone in the UK ever actually say "23 skiddoo"? I think someone made that up as a practical joke on Americans.

Wouldn't it be the other way around? It's a 1920s (or thereabouts) Americanism, I thought.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it's from the 1910s, maybe 1918? It's from when men would hang around the flatiron building in NYC...the wind came down the avenue and would expose the ladies' ankles!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and the flatiron building is on 23rd street.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

okay I got the date wrong, but c'mon, it's a great story.

Bob and David.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The guy on the right DOES look like David Cross. But who would the other guy be?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, it's Bob Odenkirk. The other guy from Mr. Show. So yeah, the 2nd guy is David Cross.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The most stereotypically British expression I know is American. How fucking typical.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

And you've actually willing to admit it, too. Bravery.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to date a boy named Dave who kind of looked like Keanu Reeves but he was British; does this bolster any theories involved here in any way? I admit to only posting this to get away from that 23 skidoo bullshit.

DAVES I KNOW

These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.
These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.

David Hoffner; he works in my dad's store.
He's worked here for twelve years.
He'll probably work here for more.

These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.
These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.

Dave Gord I've known since I was six.
In grade eight, he broke his leg
So we got drunk and sick.

These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.
These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.

Some of them are Davids,
But most of us are Daves.
They all have their own hands,
But they come from different mums.

These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.
These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.

Dave Jadisky; man this cat can swing.
He weighs almost fifty pounds
And he delivers my paper on time.

These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.
These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.

Dave Capisano; I hardly know him.

These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.
These are the Daves I know, I know.
These are the Daves I know.

We are the Daves he knows, he knows.
We are the Daves he knows.
We are the Daves he knows, he knows.
We are the Daves he knows.

Some of us are Davids,
But most of us are Daves.
We all have our own hands,
But we come from different moms.

These are the Daves I know, I know.
We are the Daves he knows, he knows.
These are the Daves.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I am amazed that the thread went for 41 posts before someone made that Kids In The Hall reference.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I am amazed that I was the one who finally broke down and made it.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

well, you *are* Canadian.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

shhhhhhhhh

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

secretly canadian!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

mint!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Pssh. Both I and (probably) Pleasant Plains made the reference. It's called subtlety, mothafuckas!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Be careful with your Robs. I know a Rob whose full name is Robin!

mei (mei), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

We do break easily

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know that many Daves. But I do know an almost unreasonable assortment of Marks! HSA and I worked out that between the two of us, we knew nearly a dozen Marks. (And that's not even counting men named Marcello or Marcus or other variations!)

Bobs at least have the diversity of being able to chose a different variation of Robert.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

im sometimes called rob and sometimes called bob. i don't really have a preference. i've introduced myself as bert too.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Bert and abbreviation of Robert? I always thought it was an Anglo-Saxon name like Egbert or Athelbert or something.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i think bert can be an abbreviation of robert, but not a lot of people take advantage of this opportunity

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Best abbreviation ever, which I just didn't get even though I knew the full name, is 'Chud'.

Anyone guess what that's short for?

mei (mei), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Cannibal Humanoid Underground Dwellers?.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Richard.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Bert = Albert, no?

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Also a fine Anglo Saxon name. Or Berthold!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

My Grandad's middle name is Ethelbert.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

my dad used to work with this guy, I forget his name, he was a geordie [maybe this is important]. he also used to work with two guys called jim orr and bill orr, I believe they were not related. the geordie guy asked my dad, one day, "y'know jim orr and bill orr?--are they the same person?" my dad said no, they were not, and asked why he would think they were. the geordie guy said "oh, in newcastle jim and bill are the same name."

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Bertram, Bertrand, Berticle.
