they look stupid tucked in unless you're wearing a suit. back me up on this.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

and sometimes they even look stupid tucked in when you're wearing a suit.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

but how else to show off your belt?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

wear it around your head!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

depends on the context.

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, this reminds me of a friend who used to yell "DARE TO UNTUCK!!!" at offending performers during quiet moments at shows.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Wear a shirt that's the same colour as your jeans, so that nobody know it's tucked in.

http://www.whotokill.com/Marks/picbamvolc.jpg

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

always leave it out unless in a professional setting or posing for International Male.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

BAM!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

what is a professional setting? Not where I work certainly, because most people don't even wear shirts with buttons on them let alone anything that could warrant tucking in.

worst offense: t shirts tucked into jeans stretched thin over protruding beer belly.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

what am i talking about, i am in a professional setting and my shirt is always untucked and i wear velcro shoes.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

out, for the love of god out, unless you're wearing a suit

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

if you tuck anything into jeans you will be beaten senseless by my withering stare

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

against intuition it seems okay to leave a shirt untucked under a fitted sweater but not under a baggy one. i guess it has to do with proportion, or give me sackcloth...

what about tucked in sweaters (tucked into trousers)?

youn, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweaters should never be tucked in. //sound of vomiting if they are//

Skottie, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend also created a list of "tuckers" and "un-tuckers" in his zine.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

the less dressy the shirt, the more you should tuck it in. for instance, flannel with holes in it? TUCKED.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Latex shirts should always be tucked in. To your ass.

Skottie, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

if you can tuck in all the bulk of a sweater then your trousers are too loose.

isadora (isadora), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

latex shirts? (insert pic of bewildered gareth here)

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Untucked with suit is a good look.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Untuck for fuck's sake.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer raises a valid point. If you are so lucky as to have a nice preppie motif belt how else are you to share your good fortune with others? I think the source of everyone's consternation is that the imaginary slacks/jeans/trousers in this thread are too tight. Wear them a size looser and tuck the shirt in from time to time.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The only people who worry about tucked shirts are people who think they're going to come across as too conservative or look just like everybody else. Otherwise who gives a shit. You tuck in yout shirt you look more together, more contained, like you mean "business." Some of us need all the help we can get in this respect!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

When wearing dress shirts at work, my tuck lasts until approximately 3:30pm and then it becomes untucked, sometimes even sleeves rolled!!!

THAT, tracer, means business. to me, at least.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer, I would like to see you in a nice huntin' dogs motif belt.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Untucked and baggy 80s Manchester style

calstars (calstars), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Unless you had everything buttoned and tucked to begin with the rolled sleeves don't really signify the same way.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

felicity wouldn't that be more hstencil's territory?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it could signify that it's very warm.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the source of everyone's consternation is that the imaginary slacks/jeans/trousers in this thread are too tight.

in brideshead, i think they wear full trousers with tucked in sweaters (jumpers). or at least, this look makes sense to me.

youn, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

many of my shirts don't have tails to tuck in, like kramer

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax I meant that when you roll up your sleeves at 3:30 it's a transformation; if you started the day like that it's just rolled-up sleeves.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The only people who worry about tucked shirts are people who think they're going to come across as too conservative or look just like everybody else. Otherwise who gives a shit. You tuck in yout shirt you look more together, more contained, like you mean "business."

Tracer very OTM. Tucked in is the way to go. else you look like a slob.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the less dressy the shirt, the more you should tuck it in. for instance, flannel with holes in it? TUCKED.

This is the most OTM thing Tracer has ever, ever said.

Anyway I never, ever tuck in a shirt but I also never, ever button more than one button unless I'm at work and even if I'm at work sometimes I just say fuck buttoning.

allyzay, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

You could go halfsies: before you leave the house tuck in your shirt and then surreptitiously untuck a quarter to a half of it. Make it look like it came untucked through no will of your own. You will look both together and scruffy. Gritty yet preppy.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, what Mary said, a/k/a the Tony Clark look. A baseball player who does not let the clothes wear him.

I am picturing a nice thoroughbred or quarterhorse motif for hstencil. Diamond can have baseballs + bats. Gygax! is way more fashionable than me -- he knows where to get the hysteric glamour belt I would try to wedge him into.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

looking like a slob is where it's at. chixdiggit

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Utterly OTM there

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

All of you privileged people own shirts?!!

tucking in while everything is baggy should not be allowed, unless you are Kriss Kross

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I see people with tucked-in tshirts all the time. It is horribly dud. In the office, a dress shirt must be tucked in. And naturally, a 40's style box-cut shirt (like surface noise's Kramer) isn't meant to be tucked in; don't try.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Tucking shirt into pants = dud
Tucking pants into socks = classic

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

honestly I always wear them untucked but occasionally see men with them tucked in and it looks alright. But I can't figure out why. I think it only works on the extremely skinny (and I am pretty skinny). It seems to also have something to do with the cut of the trousers; not high-waisted, not tapered at all at the waist. The shirt must be very lightweight as well to avoid potential bunching. The shirt must be solid colored and the trousers dark. Too much work and forethought though for me.

Untucked shirttail hanging below the sweater = classic.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

tucking pants into boots = dudder

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Tucking pants into someone else's pants = classic

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

If someone could find me a nice belt with a thoroughbred theme, I might never untuck!

(where ever did Tracer get this "hunting dog motif" idea for me? Ugh!)

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, I can kind of see you all LL Beaned out, holding a rifle with a hound dog standing faithfully by your side.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

It helps in this issue (as it does in all) if you have a V body: broad shoulders, little waist. Clothes just hang so much nicer that way. I wonder if they do shoulder implants?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

well hmmm we were talking about moving upstate tonight at dinner...

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil: man of wilderness. It has a charming ring. Like you know, you get a bloodhound and buy a red and black flannel and a hunting cap. And a riding lawnmower perhaps?

allyzay, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

no way, I'd pay the neighborhood kids $15 to mow a big-ass lawn with one of those old push style ones.

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice, nice, also you should go fishing much more often.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't need to leave the city for that though, there's a cool tackle shop in Greenpoint.

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Anyway I never, ever tuck in a shirt but I also never, ever button more than one button unless I'm at work and even if I'm at work sometimes I just say fuck buttoning" -- ally

ok to see bra?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Every single person who has gone to an NYC FAP has seen my bra, anthony. It is the truth.

hstencil, you should go fishing in a canoe on a lake though, you cannot do that in Greenpoint?

Allyzay, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom you are my hero. Although not that one I was going to post a picture of my sweet Bam. :)

tucking in shirts is vile unless you are wearing a tux. I love seeing belt buckles on boys who are wearing low-slung pants and their shirt just barely ride above the belt. ::drool:: (johnny knoxville and ryan dunn sport this look very well

http://www.austinskateboards.com/htm/bam323.jpg

(btw my best friend always tucks in his tshirts this is maddening. Tonight I shall be blunt and say that is complete ass.)

* offer does not apply to those already living in the area

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

fishing in a canoe? That's insane 'cause like I'd be afraid to fall over and/or swamp the canoe when I stood up and casted.

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Try this sometime:

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I see a lot of anti-tuckers here and it disturbs me. I admit in my younger days I was a firm anti-tucker for everything, but now that I dress a little nicer, there are certain times when tucking not only looks better, but it is essential. 'Dress' buttoned shirts mostly look stupid untucked. Still, there is some variation:

SHIRTS:
Dress shirts with or without suit and nice pants - TUCK
Any buttoned shirt with jeans or casual pants: UNTUCK
Fitted casual shirts - UNTUCK
Boxed/Kramer shirts (with flat bottom) - UNTUCK

Anything else I prefer untucked, except plain, tight white t-shirts, which look good tucked. Granted, this assumed a relatively svelte body type...

It's all about the belt, people.

the anti-tuck in element also disturbs me. I recently bought several polo style shirts and was amazed that the tail went down way past my waist and the crotch. Am I not supposed to tuck these in? Seeing people constantly in formless baggy clothes is starting to annoy me.

Bring back fitted shirts!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

am i right in thinking there there should be a us/uk divide here? as far as i know (about 2 metres), tucked in shirts/t shirts, in a non-formal context is pretty damn unusual, for uhhh...the 10-40 age range in the uk. i mean, im in my mid 20s and i only know one dude who even slightly tucks shirts in, and he gets loads of ridicule behind his back for it.

more than that i cant say, but that sort of wholesome dockers'n'shirt tucked in look sort of seems american to me; like, thats what i associate it with.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Lawrence I think the trend with t-shirts has been opposite to the case of the Amazing Lengthening Polo Shirt. About ten years ago t-shirt hems started rising so they barely reached your belt, making them effectively untuckable. (We're now in the apogee of this trend with Xtina/Britney style belly-button porn.) Worn under a dress shirt, they'd waffle about your midriff, lending the above-belt area a rumpled, slightly mutated look. The only solution was to untuck everything.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

My legs are like ridiculously long, if I tuck my shit in I look like a fucking daddy-long-legs or something. Other people can rock the tuck, but not me.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think nickalicious should tuck his t-shirts into those short-short 80s style basketball shorts.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I am using the phrase "fuck buttoning" right now. It makes me feel dirty.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually Tracer, on inspiration from this thread, I'm gonna tuck flannel shirts into 80s b-ball shorts and wear a belt with a big fat buckle. I am all that is STYLE.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

tracer, shorter t-shirts are a godsend, ideally for me they should just cover the belt, go a little past. I actually like to wear my clothes untucked if at all possible but the the tent-like quality of shirts is making either option look ridiculous. I tuck in some gigantic shirt and it balloons outward, I untuck it and it looks like a mumu.

I heard Ralph L was going to start making fitted polo shirts. Good news but I can't afford it.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Rosemary I hope you're joking.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Cos obv. they are tucked in, duh.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

lawrence kansas, Lacoste now makes beautiful fitted polo tops with a hint of spandex. They are not cheap but they will never go out of style, even in Pocket Town.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that I think about it, I actually do tuck sometimes, but it depends more on the pants than the shirt; like, shirt-tucked-into-linen-drawstring-pants = no, shirt-tucked-into-cords = different story.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

See, you're only supposed to tuck your shirt in if you like me (like, if you have a gut that protrudes like 3 inches over your belt). You gotta tuck the shirt in, then pull the pants up to right under the gut, and pull the belt as tight as possible, for that extra muffin-on-stilts look that's all the rage.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)
