Aurora comes in view...

Solar storms are in the news at the moment, and there's been much suggestion they're strong enough that Aurora Australis will be visible even here in victoria (possibly only in dark areas, say Philip Island or Wilsons Prom tho). I know theres been mega northern lights activity this past week - anyone know if us southern folk will be blessed with seeing anything in the next week or so?

I can't find a darn thing in the news anywhere :( Ive never seen one and this seems like it could be a good and only chance.

Supposedly Seattle should have gotten some nice northern lights last week, but of course it's raining so much here, and so cloudy, that we can't really see it. :-( Gee, rain in Seattle ruining something?

Reading the charts ET just linked to, it seems Melbourne is just a bit too far north for this lot, unless in the next 48 hours we get hit hard by the latest solar storm and it's during night time here. It seems to be mostly over antarctica and the southern tip of NZ, but no dice in Aus :( Poo. I'll check the skies anyway...

Quick, fly to Tasmania! (which I wish I could do again, I miss it a lot) MSNBC says it should hit midday Wednesday (US time), so that's within the next 48 hours...

If I had a car and didnt have to work the next two days, I'd drive down to wilsons prom (as far south on the mainland as you can go and not that far from where I am). But I cant... *cries*.

HSA tried to drag me out onto Black Heath the other night to listen to sunspots on his "special electrical storm sensing microphone" (also known as a load of old antennas banged together with electrical tape and possibly an oscillator thrown in there for good measure).

Well, I just popped out on the balcony, its 10.30ish pm and not too cloudy - nothing. But then again, Im in a city, theres far too much light glare. I hope in the next 24 hours something wll come to light. Er, so to speak.

Apparently it's visible from just outside Dublin. Could this be possible? I am too lazy to get into the car on the off chance of seeing it... (also could negate my point in arguing seeing it is the reason I'm heading for Norway).

Checking the link above.. I believe it. Also, the Newfies should be seeing it too.

Someone call Geir! Oslo must be drowning in auroraville, looking at the map again.

Intense auroras earlier tonight. Folks seeing it as far south as Tucson and New Mexico. Here's a big outburst as seen on the MWO 150' towercam tonight - here in Southern California!

Ok, so we've been watching the UK aurora score for some time. It hit 660 at one point recently so we went to a local light-quiet spot. Saw nothing, tried a photo or six , and managed to see some colours.

Last night, it hit 1500 but we're away.

And now you tell us it can be seen as south as New Mexico. While we're in actual Mexico. Cheers
