which is the fastest way to lose the most weight ?
which non-diet-y sort of ways work without recourse to
blaine-style total starvation ?
good experiences with weight loss ?
disasters ?

i am not fat, i have lost weight by not dieting but changing the way i eat in the past 18 months.
i want to get about half a stone lighter, quite quickly
and then stay that way.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

get into dance music. go out raving every weekend.

I am not saying this as a joke.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Eat Boots 'Shapers' - low calorie diet food and go for a half hour work everyday. I've lost a shedload of weight.

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Starving is not the best form of weight loss as your body will store fat initially & therefore no weight will be lost, apart from making yourself ill. The Atkins diet (whether or not you happen to agree with it) will be ideal for you if you like meat & can live without alot of carbs. There are more appropriate diets though. If you follow the 'Slimming World' diet for example (with which i lost 1 1/2 stone) it means you can have everything. Most things arent weighed & you dont have to drink awful milkshakes. It is basically a healthy eating plan & is the only so called diet that is ok for pregant women to do, which means that you still get all that is necessary for a healthy life.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

hey there goldenboy, i know and love the
following bootsshapers items :
tuna + cheese flatbread, strawberry choccy bar, tomato + cheese tomato bread sandwich, cheese + chive crinkly crisps, mexican chicken pittabread, etc etc.

i love boots. i wish they ran the country.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

if you are in a big hurry - this worked for me - water, speed and more water.

go for the low-calorie content. beware of mayonnaise. the reason why i'm dietting it because for three months i ate tuna and mayonnaise at fed at reds. bad move. put on alot of weight. yeah, i've been drinking alot of coffee, no sugar items, wheetabix in the morning with banana, boots shapers, and a light pasta meal at night. eat alot of fruit. you will lose weight if you combine it with light exercise.

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Half an hours work? Steady on.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Eat as much tasteless food as possible - it will put you in the mindset that food is not enjoyable but a necessity.

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Exercise is urgent and key, both for shifting weight that doesn't want to move with dieting, and for long-term weight loss.

A few years ago, I lost 2 stone, mainly through exercise and lifestyle changes, but now I've started working and don't exercise anymore, I've put the 2 stone right back on. :-(

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate is sadly otm here. Exercise will also help loads!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend (who is a doctor and should know better) lost 1.5 stone in less than 2 months on Atkins. However it is still a mental diet and dull as well. I recommend running 3 times a week, more fruit & veg and less booze.

Emma, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah my friend now eats exactly what i do and she's lost a crap load of weight ...

2 wheetabix in the morning
1 coffee
the meal deal shapers from boots (lowest calories content items)
1 coffee
snack of fruit (you can eat as much fruit as you like ...)
lite pasta meal.

that's about it. and walk as much as possible and climb stairs as much as possible. guarantee that you will lose weight. and don't drink london water - the high estrogen content will guarentee that you will grow man breasts!

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

but i lose weight and gain it v. v. quickly. dunno? i actually have stretch marks. eww...

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

friends call me Elvis because of the weight gain/loss issues that happen with me?

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Whats all this about estrogen in the london water?

marianna, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I would assume it is the diet that you follow that makes your weight yo-yo, hence why a healthier eating plan is necessary.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The Elvis diet = BOOZE AND PILLS which is what makes your weight balloon and yo-yo.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

known fact that london water has an extremely high estrogen count in it. read it in a few articles. it's always best to avoid drinking tap water though...

it's that and the sheer amount of drug abuse as well I reckon. hahaha...

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

And fried peanut butter sandwiches!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But... but... but... I drink LOADS of tap water. It took a bit of getting used to the lime, but otherwise... well, I'm a girl, so I suppose I wouldn't notice excess oestrogen.

How the heck does it get in there? Witches on the New River?

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

mood swings - i binge eat and i think it's funny to get fat. plus drugs. plus booze. plus lack of sleep (i go on four hours a day) and then challenge to lose the weight. i gained 70 pounds when i had to get my passport photo done. plus beard and crazy look equals really funny photo...! am down to anemic fighting weight again though.

i dunno how the estrogen gets in the water. i'm not a scientist but i've read it more than once.

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Douglas diet:

Every morning, work out for a solid half-hour. Then drink a protein shake before you eat anything else.

Thereafter, eat whatever you feel like eating, when and if you are hungry. If you are in the mood for a snack, ask yourself if you're actually thirsty, rather than hungry. If you're not hungry any more, stop. When possible, cook for yourself.

This really works, and it makes you feel very good, too.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf600/f613/f61340zg6bm.jpgFat flabby annie was incredibly big
She weighed just about sixteen stone
And then a fake dietician went and put her on a diet
Now she looks like skin and bone.

Do the meditation and yoga
And she’s thrown away the good food guide
And she’s given up the alcohol and pizzas
And the pies and now she looks as if she’s ready to die,
You can’t see her walk by.

Don’t eat no mashed potatoes,
Don’t eat no buttered scones
Stay away from carbohydrates
You’re gonna look like skin and bone.

Living on the edge of starvation
And she says she’s got no appetite
And her father and her mother
And her sisters and her brothers
Couldn’t see her when she walked by
She looked like skin and bone.

Don’t eat no mashed potatoes,
Don’t eat no buttered scones
Stay away from carbohydrates
You’re gonna look like skin and bone.

She used to be so cuddly,
She used to be so fat,
But oh what a sin cos she’s oh so thin
That she lost all the friends that she had,
She looks like skin and bone

If you look flabby
And you feel overweight,
And you wanna lose a couple of stone,
Take a crash course diet do your daily exercises
And you’ll look like skin and bone.
Come on rattle them bones,

Put your hands up to the ceiling,
Bend your hips and touch your toes,
Do your daily exercises,
You’re gonna look like skin and bone,

Don’t eat no mashed potatoes, etc.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Don’t eat no mashed potatoes, etc.

Whoah dude that's harsh!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

and take up smoking!!!! this is key and essential. cigarettes are appetite supressants!

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Eat sensibly, exercise regularly. Anything else is mentalism.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What Matt says. Find a sport or activity you enjoy and sign up for it. Walk whenever you can. Drive to places where you'd otherwise get drunk. Dump nutritionally valueless food. Don't eat refined sugar. Reduce portion size. Have grapes or apples or carrots etc. around in case you feel the need to snack. Plan your menus a bit more carefully so you don't end up resorting to takeaway. Be disciplined, even when you're treating yourself.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The London water thing scares me, as I worry about getting man-breasts (or 'bitch-tits'). But I've read loads of other reputable aricles that explain how common tap water is actually better for the body than bottled/filtered water, since it filters out everything. One scary article demonstrated that if you only drank bottled (or worse, distilled) water, your teeth would fall out because of the lack of flouride, which is common in tap water.

My weight stays fairly constant, but keeping on the go is key, like other have said - eat sensibly of course, walk everywhere, etc. Keep the metabolism level high. And yeah, cut out the booze if you can. That's a tough one, though.

Unfortunately, some of the extreme suggestions re: dancing and drugs help. A good friend wanted to lost weight and lost tons by basically going to clubs and taking pill all the time. It worked, but she's a bit, well, 'sketchy' now...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Completely off topic but -

Oestrogen gets into tap water from women who take birth control-pills and then pee out hormones, no?

I have a hilarious ad that I pinched from the subway that says:

"Males behave like females. Females become more male. SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE SEA!"

(It's about fish & hormones. Though it's much funnier to see it as a weird anti-queer ad.)

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Half a stone is easy to lose. Just try to switch to grilled stuff a few times a week, cut the consumption of carbs and the booze a bit, and avoid eating sweets every time you can. But most importantly, try to exercize on a regular basis going out to dance, run, walk, etc.

If you're too lazy for that, then try to get vigorously laid on a regular basis and that should do the trick. Think of all the happy endorphines.

Miggie (Miggie), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oestrogen gets into tap water from women who take birth control-pills and then pee out hormones, no?

Don't you have water filtration and purification systems in the UK?!?!?!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. Our kidneys.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd advise poverty as a means to weight loss.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh. Pee water.

I would think so, amateurist, but I GAINED weight in college instead of losing it and I ate ramen and crackers all the time.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, poverty often leads to being overweight, because greasy fast food is usually pretty cheap.

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd advise poverty as a means to weight loss.

i wouldn't. you know how many poor people in the US are FAT?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i was a size 4 (u.s., so that's like u.k. 6 right?) when i was vegan. not eating any animal products really slims you down, although it can be hard to do. i was spoiled because of all of the options in nyc and didn't feel deprived, but when i travelled it could be quite difficult.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Breakfast: bowl of cereal or 2 bits of toast
Mid morning: piece of fruit
Lunch: sandwich or soup and roll
Mid afternoon: piece of fruit
Dinner: bowl of pasta or risotto with as little cheese as you can get away with or vegetable stew with more
Throughout: water

If you are in the mood for a snack, ask yourself if you're actually thirsty, rather than hungry.
This really is the key for me.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

that should say "vegetable stew with more non-cal veg than potatoes and stuff".

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Thing is, I read these low-calorie, healthy-lifestyle diet instructions, and I think to myself "What do I really value more in life? Being a size 12, or having the added extra enjoyment of a bit of chocolate or a pint of bitter?" And then I pig out.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

mr teeny is the same way; he exercises tons but loves to eat! He is going to try Atkins which means that since I'm a vegetarian we won't be able to eat anything together. :(

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

not eating any animal products really slims you down,

Does it? Admitedly I am only a veggie, but I don't think this is true at all. I eat dairy but still. So are you saying it's the dairy?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

dairy is EXTREMELY fattening. i live on soya.

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I got ill a couple of weeks ago and couldn't hold any food down at all as a result I lost about a stone in weight in about six days. Just hang around ill children and breathe in their bacteria/viruses. You will be waiflike in no time.

Davel, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I've met fat vegetarians (cause after all, most candy is vegetarian!) but I've yet to meet a fat vegan. I think it's partly the animal fat, and partly the sheer lack of vegan junk food!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the sodding BOUZE!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but if you drink loads of booze and cut out all solid food, then you lose weight. Trust me, I've done it!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My lady love lost over a stone in just over two months on the Weightwatchers diet. Unfortunately her boobs shrunk in the process. I still love her, just not as much as when they were big boobies.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

and soya is so so much better than milk.

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My lady love lost over a stone in just over two months on the Weightwatchers diet. Unfortunately her boobs shrunk in the process. I still love her, just not as much as when they were big boobies.

This is the number one reason that I'm not that bothered about my weight gain. If I put on a bit of weight, HSA would still love me. If my boobs diminished, I'd be dumped in a heartbeat. ;-)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, pink, it's the dairy. no cheese, no butter, no eggs - it makes a big difference. i know quite a few veggies who wind up with a very high-fat diet because of their reliance on dairy to make up protein.
also, most mass-market candy is out as well as lots of desserts. i realize this must sound like torture, but i don't have much of a sweet tooth so it wasn't a big deal. i would eat high-quality organic dark chocolate or bake banana bread or something if i really had a craving.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

for snacking - i go for the sesame seed snaps or the big bars they sell in turkish shops - it's just a bit of honey and sesame seed. i could live off of those!

Soya Hot Chocolate. Amazing!

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

goldenboy otm. even though i'm no longer vegan, i still drink soy milk. call me crazy but i find it much tastier, and if it's fortified then it's so much better for you than dairy milk. i won't get started, but the delusion that cow's milk is good for you is one of my pet peeves!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink milk, but either skimmed or semi-skimmed & not that much, I dont eat that many eggs, I don't eat butter. I do eat cheese but no more that about 1 oz per day.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I have inherited Katie's irritation when people insist you can't get any protein if you don't eat animal products! Check out lentils! Chickpeas! Heavens!

However soy milk = ugh ugh. Especially the strawberry soya milk drink which is basically sugar and PRODUCT which is OK for the first TWO SECONDS and then the aftertaste of YUCK stays with you for the rest of the day. ASHFISUFHSD.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely it can't be the crisps I eat then??

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when I had a working throat and could eat crisps without utter pain.

Sod this coughing my guts up in the office lark, I am going home in 15 mins! Hurrah - getting into work early = classic. Never mind the fact I think I will vom all over desk if I stay any longer.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(nb vomming all over desk is not my weightloss tip)

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Harsh, get thee to bed lady!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

and soya is so so much better than milk.

Soy contains phytoestrogens that are thought to have estrogen-like effects on one's body. A glass or two of soy milk a day isn't thought to have any serious effects of this nature, but doctors aren't so sure about the effects of diets heavy in soy. (Apart from the usual disclaimer that too much of *anything* is not good for you.)

And Sarah OTM about nonmeat proteins. However, isn't there a B vitamin that can only be found in animal products?

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

There is, I think it's B12, but you can get it from marmite, woo hoo!

goldenboy, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

general weight loss/maintenance tip: avoid fried foods as much as possible. my father lost about 12lbs in four months by replacing his usual small order of fries with a side salad at lunch. that was it, no other changes.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I think some vegetarians are still chubby because they eat so many carbs. Well, that seems true for me anyway.

One decision I made a while back was to eat at Starbucks less. I got in this habbit of having coffeecake items and latte type drinks almost every morning before work. It was expensive too! Now I have a variety of foods at my desk, like slim fast bars, low fat poptarts, and sometimes fruit or yogurt. And I drink the free coffee at work as much as I can stand it.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

About four years ago on the spur of the moment I decided to become vegan. I'm not sure why. After a few weeks I noticed I was losing weight, so I started exercising because I figured I may as well lose more weight while I was at it... I lost about sixty pounds all together. However, about a year after being vegan I started eating cheese a lot and after about three years of that I've gained all that weight back.

Mandee (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I know plenty of fat vegans who live on french fries, at least when eating out.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

My co-workers would always rag on me about getting enough protein. It was so obnoxious. As if protein only came in the form of a big juicy steak. But this was in Greeley, Colorado, home of every hamburger in America (quite literally).

Mandee (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Become completely sedentary. Your basal metabolism will slow down to the point where you simply don't need many calories and eating becomes a downright chore b/c you fill up so quickly. (nb. do this only if you're me and stoopid.)

Constant weight fluctuation is dangerous, it increases chances of heart disease.

Who hear manages 5 small meals a day?

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The only way that i've ever managed to successfully lose weight is by counting calories. It's all about creating a caloric deficit, so yes, you need to eat less and work out more. You need to burn approximately 3500 more calories than you consume to lose one pound. so to lose seven pounds (which is approx. half a stone innit?) you need to burn an excess 24500 calories. That's not as insurmountable as it may sound though. Your basal metabolic rate (what it takes to maintain your body at its current weight if you are completely sedentary) is roughly 11 calories per pound per day. I don't know how much you weigh or how quickly you need to drop the weight, but you can figure out how much you need to work out. Hope that helps.

mouse, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I lost a couple of stones nearly five years ago. I was drinking way too much at the time, and since I was a year or so away from feeling able to stop, I did it by just eating a hell of a lot less (i.e. only eating half of my dinner, skipping snacks, etc.). It worked. No ill effects. I felt pretty good for a while, even if I was drunk half the time.

Most of that weight stopped off too. Except in the last six months or so, where I've been getting fatter even though my lifestyle hasn't changed (if anything, I'm a bit more active). Annoying. A symptom of being an old fart, presumably.

ChrissieH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Get serious depression. That's a surefire weightloss method - you don't eat or want to do anythign, really. Well, I didn't.

I'm only semi-joking btw :/ I lost over 10 kg this way without trying (and I didn't really need to lose weight, I was all skin and bones at my worst).

Heres a tip tho - if you do lose loads, don't go out and buy loads of sexy tight clothes like I did, for you will inevitably put a wee bit back on and then nothing fits and you have to go get new gear, bah.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Develop a perceptive disorder so that when you look at yourself in the mirror you think you look horrible. Become hyper-vigilant about what you consume. Keep losing weight until one day you look in the mirror and discover that you are too thin, and now really look horrible. Begin eating again.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah that did occur to me after I posted it, j.lu :(

I am forever amazed by some people not getting the simplest of solutions - eat well, eat less, move more. It really is that simple. Seen people on so-called diets drinking diet coke and weighloss food replacement shakes... and then eating a meat pie for lunch and wondering why they're not losing weight, I mean wtf.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Thursday, 2 September 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I've lost a little weight since starting full-time work again. I'd say this is down to having a routine as opposed to lazing around all day and eating when I want. Eating healthily and cycling to and from work every day helps as well.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 2 September 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Easiest way to exercise when you 'haven't got the time' is just change your everyday habits. for example, if you watch tv, get up & change the channel. If you iron your clothes downstairs, take each item of clothes upstairs after you have ironed it. Get off the bus a stop early etc etc.

As a fairly lazy person who likes food (and being on the pill contributes too), the only way I seem to be able to keep my weight steady is by eating three meals a day and NOT SNACKING. If I want to actually LOSE weight then I pay a lot more attention to what's IN the three meals, and I exercise. Kind of obvious I guess.

I ate so much crap in Berlin at the weekend but walked everywhere (we must have averaged about 5 miles a day) and have still managed to lose so there's a lot to be said for exercise.

Although I stopped working out intensely a couple of months ago, I seem to be continuing to lose weight (nb. I don't follow the best diet or anything). Even last night, my dad was convinced that I look "gaunt" (which I don't). Mind you, I live in the most frugal house there is and seem to get by on 2 meals a day - at best. I tend to snack a bit, but mainly nuts and the odd bit of fruit. I do a fair bit of walking most days and the odd bit of dancing around the house. Look, my metabolism's pretty damn weird.

If you just want to lose a little bit of weight I cannot stress this more:

EAT
AND
DRINK
A
TINY
BIT
LESS
THAN
YOU
NORMALLY
DO

AND

WALK
A
LITTLE
BIT
MORE

It really is that simple.

(says the man with the little belly.)

If you want more serious weight loss you need to seriously look at your entire lifestyle, do not go on 'a diet' - but change your diet FOREVER - walk a lot more: sell your car, lose your bus pass more often, do you really need to catch that taxi?

eating healthier is easy. what's so hard?
I know I physically can't get through the day without a lunchtime chocolate bar - I'd probably collapse it's that bad (worrying about diabetes now). But instead of going out and buying a king size snickers, I find that one of those 10p dairy milk Freddo bars are the optimum amount of choc to satisfy any sweet tooth minus tons of extra calories and also it's good honest Cadbury chocolate.

I also make sure I have some kind of vegetable in every meal. This has come to the point where I feel lousy and slobbish if I don't. So - sandwiches/burgers always have lettuce and tomato in them; cooked meals always have a serving of salad or boiled/steamed veg. Vegetables are inexpensive, taste great (yes they do) and are good at clearing out crap from your system. It's all common sense really.

i lost 3 stone sitting on the floor getting stoned and not eating much for 7 weeks. The weight stayed off because I exersise and watch what I eat. Taking speed and going to squat parties also helped. I remeber coming back from one, getting out of the shower and being able to see my ribs for the first time since I was a kid. Personaly i hold little store with diets, they place too much focus on food, which is something you need to avoid. They also tend to create effort-reward dichotomys, in which both parts continue and exaserbate food fixation. Instead, try to take food out of the equasion, detach it from your feelings, and see it as meerely sustinance. Finally, and this may be a little difficult, make fun of your weight. I was very sensitive about my weight, and found that this created a visciouse cycle, rejection and embarassment led to more eating. Stare down that gut of yours, make light of it, make jokes about it, and you may find that the cycle is broken.
p.s. ride a bike to work, play squash, dance around your kitchen, by this I mean, try to do something that gets you exercise, without you noticing that you are getting exercise.

I do minimal exercise (routines), but I lost about 10 pounds in about 6 months. My "workout" is less than 10 minutes - I do it first thing when I wake up. Raises the metabolism for the first half of the day. I followed this book, very loosely, just as a guid to which exercises to do:

.. I also walk a lot

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 2 September 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Over the course of 2002, I lost about 30kg. Don't do it that quickly or you end up with disgusting excess skin. Oh well. Screw Atkins, I ate half a loaf of bread a day....
