Battle of the most indie outer gear ever.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a parka, but it's blue & there isnt any orange on it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I was forced to wear duffel coats as a child, even after we went to American and everyone else was wearing DOWN JACKETS. I've hated them ever since! I wanted an AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT and my parents came back with yet another duffel coat, but with a multi-coloured plaid lining. :-(

I want a parka.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

My main concern with getting a duffel coat would be that it ITCHED (pure wool heritage ect) whereas a parka = ultra synthetic, hurrah! But seeing as I can't imagine John Steed in a parka, duffels win. With the proviso that they are pseudo-non-itchy duffels.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

sheepskin

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlton don't you have some second hand cars to flog?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(I wonder at what point someone will bring up the military origins of both parka and duffel, at which point this thread will turn into ARMY VS. NAVY: FITE!!! in which case I'd have to go with the RAF and get a bomber jacket.)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

My duffel doth not itch. Hurrah for Top Man!

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Does the indie kid come with it?

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i wanted sheepskin but i bought this Parkaesque thing instead

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Duffel, obv.

However, I once had the ultimate UNDIE outer garments: yes: a BIG FUCK OFF ORANGE PUFFA. If you'd met me you would know how k-absurd this is. Looked good in philosophy class, but did absorb smoke inordinately. I was at this stage a big Wu-and-Saint-Etienne fan. It was 1996.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I'm not very indie 'coz I don't really have either...

I have a pretty basic charcoal grey overcoat and a leather jacket that do the trick here in London. Although in Canada I did have a big, bulky parka-type thing for the extreme cold, but it wasn't one of those cool army green ones with the sheepskin hood. I did always want one, though, but I was afraid it would make me look too much like a mod-poseur (Toronto has a strangely large 'mod' scene). So in a roundabout way I guess that's a semi-vote for parkas.

Where to anoraks fit into this? Aren't they the most indie of outerwear?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

What I really want is one of the furry FREEEEEEHHHHHHND coats from UNIQLO.

I really need to resolve this winter coat issue because it's getting cold. Or maybe I should dig through my stored clothes and find my big Ukranian Russian Army coat thing, but it's a bit too formal-looking for every day occasions.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we get a defintion of 'anorak' plz? I always thought it meant those 'ski-jacket' style non-descript padded coats. But then some people think they are rainproof thingies (= cagouls in my book). Help!

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

anorak (noun)
1 a warm waterproof hip-length jacket usually with a hood, originally worn in polar regions, but now worn for any outdoor activity

2 (informal)
a socially inept person with a hobby considered by most people to be boring
[ETYMOLOGY: from Eskimo ánorâq]

Though other sites did make note of the fact that British usage is often "windbreaker" or "windcheater".

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a Parka. It is blue outside and orange inside. The inside was mauled by a cat and all the stitching is coming out. It is so waterproof that all the water runs into the pockets, onto my CD player, and off the bottom and onto my trousers, which then stick to my thighs in a cold manner. This I do not like. I have not worn a duffel coat since I was wee but I would seriously consider one.

neil, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

a socially inept person with a hobby considered by most people to be boring

= what, in inuit circles?

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with the duffelgangers.

Kate, this one's for you:

Back through the years I go wonderin' once again
Back to the seasons of my youth
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my momma put the rags to use
There were rags of many colors, every piece was small
And I didn't have a coat and it was way down in the fall
Momma sewed the rags together, sewin' every piece with love
She made my coat of many colors that I was so proud of
As she sewed, she told a story from the bible she had read
About a coat of many colors Joseph wore and then she said
Perhaps this coat will bring you good luck and happiness
And I just couldn't wait to wear it and momma blessed it with a kiss
My coat of many colors that my momma made for me
Made only from rags but I wore it so proudly
Although we had no money I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors my momma made for me
So with patches on my britches, holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colors I hurried off to school
Just to find the others laughing and making fun of me
In my coat of many colors my momma made for me
And oh I couldn't understand it for I felt I was rich
And I told them of the love my momma sewed in every stitch
And I told 'em all the story momma told me while she sewed
And how my coat of many colors was worth more than all their clothes
But they didn't understand it and I tried to make them see
That one is only poor only if they choose to be
Now I know we had no money but I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors my momma made for me

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I have new black wool parka from Top Man. It's brilliant! It has a detachable furry bit. It's really warm and comfy, and only £65.

Duffel coats, I tend to feel these days, are a bit... twee.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I always knew my momma didn't love me. All the duffel coats in the world (read: Harrods) prove that. Sigh.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

neither for me, I have a nice long coat from Uniqlo which is a kind of anorak I suppose but it's a bit too long and has no fur to be a true 'rak. And now I have a Nike jacket which is nicely water and windproof, and thanks to Vicky it now has a snuggly zip in fleece which makes it warm enough for arctic expeditions.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I am aware of the twee factor of yer Duffel, but parkas give me flashbacks to Reading 92.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Peacoat.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the safety orange parka with the fur lining, made me the joke of the bustop for a good part of my childhood.
WITH THE HOOD UP AND FASTENED EVEN! IT COULD OF STOPPED BULLETS

kephm, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Cnadians are indie by default (but not the band Default, they suck).

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

so it is all my mums fault i turned indie/there is more truth to this than it seems.

kephm, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

No Kephm, you're thinking of
http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~heraldry/batfinkr.gif

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess its my moms fault too. damn canadians.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I would gladly burn both :)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Parkas are more indie, duffs are more preppie, hence duffels win. I would not refuse a parka, though. Kate, what does your furry Uniqlo friend look like?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Parkas
http://www.theparkas.com/website_images/parkas1cmw2003.jpg

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It is hard to explain what FREEEEEHHHHHND looks like. Did you go to Camden Market while you were here, Mary? You know those scary fake-fur beanbag things with the tufty psuedo-sheepbearskin fur? It would probably be like wearing one of those. It would either make its wearer look like a teddy bear, a less successful muppet, or a Star Trek alien.

I have since become fascinated with the closing mechanism of Nigel Spivey's bomber jacket. It seems to involve not just zippers but some kind of leather straps across the neck as well. This seems highly kinky to me, and I must investigate further!

kate (kate), Thursday, 30 October 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a lovely new brown duffel coat. I was going to get a black one to avoid dirt showing up but I prefer brown innit.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a black parka, the zip is fucked though so instead of repairing it I might buy a new coat. I am disappointed by the lack of some new and obvious trend for me to jump on. it's all still parkas

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Where can I get a cheap parka in London? I'm poor.

Mandee (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

GLASTONBURY! (sorry)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(i know it's not in London, for the record)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, mine wasn't cheap. Prob try somewhere like topshop or h & m if that's your thing.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My Topshop parka was £65, does that count as cheap?

Otherwise, try Uniqlo and especially charity shops.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Uniqlo have got a lovely mens canvas one with a furry hood for thirty quid at the moment

chris (chris), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

65 doesnt count as cheap

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure you can get cheaper in Camden or some army navy type market stall thing. I seem to recall seeing them for about £35, but I forget where. (I wish I could remember! I want one!)

kate (kate), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I really need a warmer coat but nothing seems to be catching my eye lately. :( And I'm COLD.

Mandee (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 30 October 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that £65 was an ok price for a coats, but then mine was £150.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 30 October 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm shivering like mandee.

so my question is: which is warmer? the duffel or the parka? the cheap parkas that my friends have seem to be thin and hardly warm at all. are there any that are actually toasty warm?

even though i grew up in semi-arctic michigan, i have very little tolerance for being cold.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 30 October 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My parka is the cosiest of cosy! It wasn't cheap though & it has loads of fur inside to keep you nice & toasty.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw a wicked spiewak parka the other day and really want it - it's brown with fur and stuff

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine's blue with fur & stuff, oh & it's Silas.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

always had a parka when i was a kid, until one fateful day when the zip stuck right at the top and i panicked because i was getting a bit clautrophobic and yanked it really hard and ended up catching the skin of my chin in the zip and it really hurt.

So now i am afraid of them, i would rather freeze thanks.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ouch! That hurts sooooo much, I have done this before. It's weird that you panic so quickly isn't it?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

it was horrible, the zip was caught in the furry rim (yeh) and the more i pulled at it (yeh again) the worse it got!

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Nasty image you are painting there!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

eriik, Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

To me, a Parka says: swaggering indie prick who really wants to talk to me about the Stone fucking Roses (I live in Manchester).

A Duffel coat says: bit odd, bit shy, harmless, may have hidden depths of musical knowledge.

Duffel wins slightly but they're both a bit cak. What isn't cak is my just-above-knee-length, black wool/cashmere, three button, very warm, looks ace with a scarf, overcoat (not sure of it's official name but it's very smart and very nice). A friend once said that it made me look like Camus. I suppose this is a good thing. I also have a grey coat similar to the above but with more extravagant lapels and a little belt, I consider to be the kind of overcoat that Leonard Cohen would have once worn. A friend tells me it makes me look like a character from It's A Wonderful Life. I'm sure this is a good thing.

So it comes down to The Undertones vs Paddington Bear vs Cary Grant.

Ian SPACK, Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

so is this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/1f/Snorkel_parka.jpg/180px-Snorkel_parka.jpg really what Brits think an anorak is?

anoraks are parkas you pull over your head - they don't have full-length zippers like jackets.

gabbneb, Monday, 24 November 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.beatsnothing.com/thepaper/wp-content/hoodedseagul.png

This is an anorak.

Maria, Monday, 24 November 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

In case it's not obvious from the picture, it is made of seal gut.

Maria, Monday, 24 November 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

Anoraks are the most disgusting indie outer gear in all the world imo

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 24 November 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

"so is this really what Brits think an anorak is?"

no, brits would think that was a parka.

jed_, Monday, 24 November 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

wikipedia: "A snorkel parka - synonymous with 'anoraks'."

gabbneb, Monday, 24 November 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

so that girl is wearing an anorak, but she is not an anorak because she is not wearing a snorkel parka

gabbneb, Monday, 24 November 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

i'd say most british people know the difference between a snorkel parka and an anorak.

jed_, Monday, 24 November 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 24 November 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

need a new coat...it's hard
