Does anybody still use the old thumb to hitch a lift or do you give lifts to hitchers?

Or does the thought of being butchered in a country layby put you off?

Inspired by giving a lift to a smelly bloke on crutches with a bag of sheet music yesterday.

I could never do this or imagine picking up a hitch hiker, the thought just really scares me.
My brother used to do it all of the time & he met some really interesting ppl as a result.

I hitchiked from Tierra del Fuego to Buenos Aires a couple of years back. Took about 30 different rides including a Chilean patrol boat. Best thing I've ever done. Didn't get murdered once.

hitchhiking is fun. the last time i had to hitchhike was september whilst in corsica - missed last bus ... only two horror stories really (and i used to hitch hike back and forth after, of course, being inspired by 'on the road')...

1. dustin (friend) and myself - hitchhiking through british columbia. dustin had mohican. rural freaks tried to kill us by running us down, firing shotguns and etc.

2. sandra (sigh. sandra, i miss you, because even though you are in london, i doubt that you will ever be the holly golighty free creature you once were ... but glad that you landed yer monied partner) - i used to hitchhike with sandra, whose outfit was: thigh high leather boots and hot pants. we got mad rides. a biker tried to get it off wtih sandra but i suppose we should not have accept his offer to get high. narrowly escaped when sandra stabbed him with her hitch hiking knife.

3. Dave (drug buddy) - hitchhiking back from a party. Police car slows. Dave eats 100 hits of acid to avoid being busted for dealing. Spend the night following him around country while he talked about 'shopping on mars'.

Did it in France a few times around Cluny where I was holidaying for a while. We were the bad experience for someone, we'd been staying in Taize and I guess I had iron deficiency or something after a week cos I was prone to getting nosebleeds which never normally happens me. Anyway these were like turning on a tap, very messy and went on for ages.

One day this old couple picked us up and within 2 minutes of being in the back of the car my nose started gushing blood, I ran out of tissues and was covering it with my hands and shirt and whatever, eventually they pulled over and we got out, well before Taize itself, I apologised loads and when they realised it was my nose and not just blood from somewhere else all over me I think they felt bad about it.

They didn't drive us the rest of the way though and if you've ever been to Taize you'll know how steep the hill up to it is, I nearly fainted several times. Nasty stuff. I went to the doc in cluny the next day.

One time I was riding around some new friends (2 female bandmates from summer of '97) and the driver stopped to pick up a hitch hiker. He was kind of cute, but obviously really sketchy. They had him sit in the back with me. He said he had hitch hiked all the way from Seattle to see his girlfriend in Louisiana. At first we were like, awww, but then when we asked more about it, he said, "Yeah, I called her and told her I was coming, but she said not to... So it's a surprise I guess." And right before we dropped him off he was like, "Do you guys know a good dealer around here?"

I lived in India when I was 12-16. My family used to go on vacations with my friend Brian's family. One time, we were on vacation out somewhere mountainous in India, I don't remember where exactly. For some reason, Brian and I decided that we were going to walk to this school. Maybe Brian had friends there or something, I don't really remember. So he said it was a couple of miles away, it wouldn't take that long. We left in the morning, hiking down this mountain path, occasionally meeting up with little Indian kids or old men. Well, long story short, it ended up taking basically the entire day to walk to this weird run-down boarding school. We were exhausted by the time we got there and the place was kind of creepy. We met these kids roughly our age who were nice, and they started to walk back with us to the house that our families had rented. We got to this mountain town with garish handpainted advertisements and we just couldn't walk any more. We tried to find a bus that was going our direction, but couldn't figure it out. It was starting to get dark. Our Indian friends ended up getting us a ride on the back of this truck for part of the way back home. That was my one adventure with hitchhiking. But I guess that's not really hitchhiking. Sorry to waste your time.

Done the trip from New Brunswick to Halifax several times this way. Nothing too scary, usually geeky Dal or SMU students or allumni give you a ride.
