odd gigs you have had to go to alone to review

XTINA!

I actually really want to go but I can't see any of my mates joining me on a Friday night.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of them. I didn't like going to review gigs with friends, I found them too distraction - i.e., I would judge the quality of the experience on how much fun my friend and I had, rather than the quality of the band/music.

kate (kate), Thursday, 30 October 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I like bringing a friend, having a few drinks etc, I hate the idea of going to Xtina alone on a Friday like some dodgy weirdo. I better buy a raincoat.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hate doing that. Must bring friend, simply because the time that isn't spent watching band should not be spent in Lone Rock Hack mode, looking for acquaintances to speak to.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i would def. want to take someone (read female) of similar age to Xtina and hope they would enjoy it more than me. Ronan if you go down the pub tonight you may be able to acquire a suitable accomplice?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

If I actually fancied someone who'd be down the pub tonight then maybe, I actually quite like Xtina, most of the singles of the latest album except Beautiful, and I'm sure it'll be easy to sit through with a beer or ten, I guess I have to take what I can get at this stage and I am fairly pleased that I am getting more work than I can handle all of a sudden.

Money, beautiful money.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

related question: when you're breaking into the whole print thing, is it wise to accept all jobs you're offered. (they are all paid etc)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, because of the versatility thing. I think a good writer can tackle anything that's part of her or his broad subject of interest.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh -- that bird who's married to Richard Fearless... One Dove... coffee table bollox for Hoxton. Awful. Fer the student press. Marked exact moment when I knew I didnae want to go into the music press (because of the terrible industry types -- this was a 'showcase').

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I keep forgetting that there are people who review gigs for reasons other than that they enjoy the music...

kate (kate), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh get her! I will enjoy writing about Xtina, she's a bigger star than most of the bands I usually write about so I figure I might as well. Shame I don't get an interview.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i turned down Massive Attack gig once cos i would've been on my own - how sad! it was at London Docklands Arena tho, hmmmmmm

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always managed to fill the gig plus ones (mainly thanks to my friend Tom, who will come to and be interested by almost anything), but I had to do Creamfields Ireland 2001 alone (God that was miserable), Bedrock in Brighton (quite fun, made friends with some lads from Global Underground and got trashed with them afterwards. "If we've got a journalist with us we can put it all on expenses!") and Seed Records' night in Aldwytch tube station (left just after midnight). On the whole though i've had nice photographers to go along with.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i went to that seed records night in aldwych anna, you should have hung out with me

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, when was the Seed thing? I really want to put on a gig at Aldwych, any ideas how to get hold of whoever I need to speak to? I've hit so many dead ends my head's starting to hurt.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd like to go to something at Aldwych to see what it's like now - it pleases me that i was able to use the tube station once (bout 12 years ago)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No Charlton, you didn't go to that one, because i phoned and aksed if you wanted to and it was during your nine-weeks-of-work-no-weekends period when you were about to have a nervous breakdown. You declined in favour of sleep.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

oh! i dont remember!

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

tons, but then I review stuff for a midsized daily paper on the Cdn prairies. though I did snake my brother into coming to Nana Mouskouri with me.
"Dude, let's just hang out. Don't worry about what we do, let's just spend some time together as brothers."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

When in dire trouble call on ILXors - I'd certainly go as would the Vicar (he's a huge fan).

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to go, but I'm home this weekend and away the next.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That's home as in family, not just the worst excuse ever for anything.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha - I reckon Ronan must just not like us (and is rubbing it in rather publicly). I don't know anyone who wouldn't go to this for a laugh.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm used to heading to gigs on my own, for the reasons Kate gave.

Lara, it isn't a laugh if you actually spend hard earned cash to watch her suck.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

for a laugh = not paying !!

I go to gigs on my own because I can never be bothered making plans and also because I hate rejection (!). Dublin is small though so most things I head to end up being popular with other people I know.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Dublin = NYC with Irish brogue, as that usually happened to me too.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Dublin = (NYC + Irish accents) - fantastic shoe shops.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't go anymore, I forgot I had already arranged something better. Xtina will have to wait, I called the mag today and they thought I was making crazy shit up. Kind of annoying I was looking forward to it really.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so pathetic in my hermitism that I go to shows alone sans reviewing-show excuse.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

oh I used to do that too, but I always met someone I knew cos I was on drugs.

Those were the days, now I'm lucky if I can find one hour a week in which to get funky.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan is *so* pretending because he hates us.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 31 October 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

nonsense!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 31 October 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i went to highpoint shopping centre all by myself to see kelly rowland signing things, and i got her to autograph a cd single for spizzazzz by tricking her into thinking my name = spizzazzz... it was a lot of fun and long and boring all at the same time

minna (minna), Saturday, 1 November 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i would have liked to have a friend there with me but at the same time things probably wouldn't have turned out the way they did... also i would have felt bad for making a friend stand around in line with me for 3 hours
