I am instinctively linking this with the THREADS thread and I don't know why.

Alex in Leeds (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

how could i not love it?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

These will always hold a special place in my childhood.

after his top ten smash Charley went off the rails a bit. a couple of years later he was found face down in alley with a tube of bhutane and a cluster of furballs - later found to have contained traces of ketamine and speed. after a lengthy rehabilitation process Charley now resides with Mrs Blenkinsop in Havering-Atte-Bower and is considering numerous offers from the pantomime circuit for this winter.

CharlieNo4 says get off my frickn' case...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I am instinctively linking this with the THREADS thread and I don't know why.

cos of the Patrick Allen narrated "Protect and Survive" shorts shown around the same era - I'm sure I once watched a tape that had all of these on, P&S, Charley, Learn to Swim, etc. Threads had lots of the narration in the background including the notorious bit about moving dead bodies into the next room.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

These were never part of my childhood, so, like Button Moon, I can quite easily say dud.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps all the Threads buyers who couldn't get their fix of doom are endlessly respooling Lonely Water...

1. why is there an instinctive reaction (one i am not necessarily immune to) to dismiss such things as injokey student nostalgia?

2. is the fact that things such as public information films are now more widely available the reason why we are more dismissive of such things now? or, are we more dismissive of historical television minutae than we were, say 10 years ago

is the answer to all questions like this, "clips shows"?

BEEYOOWEE BEEYOOWEE BEEE
BEEYOOWEE BEEYOOWEE BEEE
BEEYOOWEE BEEYOOWEE BEEE
BEEE BEEE BIH-BEEE BEEE

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i do think the injokey nostalgia (shtowdent or otherwise) falters a bit when it comes justifying exactly WHY these things are so great. "Yeah, Charley man, brilliant! Why? Oh...ummmm...well it was like so bad it was good innit" Now I CAN see SOME logic in that but the fact remains these were pretty terrible drawings and animation made with pretty lousy cheapo technology but I can only assume they were successful in getting their message across so the execution was not so important (these days it seems artistic and technical execution has eclipsed all else resulting in more style over substance material). that said, the artwork does resemble the sort of thing a child themselves would do and there is something endearing about that, and this kind of thing ties in well with the same melancholic realm of nostalgia that's popular but more of an undercurrent (Boards Of Canada etc.) because the sparseness of it and the way sound is utilised (often stilted and incongruous - again thru what seems like poor strategy ala having programmers design interfaces back in the day) adds a curious haunting tone to it all, esp. when attached to your own childhood memories and your mortal realisation. mebbe.

LITTL BITTA BASS....LITTL BITTA DRAMS

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Charley says DRUMS!
Charley says BASS!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

now my quasi-intellectual analysis is adrift in a sea of BASS AND DRUMS!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course kids don't really care about quality of animation (hello Henry's Cat) as long as the story and characters are compelling. Obviously in public information films the story is all about DANGER, DEATH, and MUTILATION - so amazingly compelling. This makes them, as dramatic documents, really rather memorable. Charlie especially due to the literal catawauling he did.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 30 October 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i didnt ever want to see the cat! now i will never be able to picture keith whatshisface making the cat noise
