Is it not time that this big-chinned family be once more made the rulers of Spain, Belgium, Austria and large chunks of central Europe ?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The last one worth noticing, Franz Josef, lived too damn long and his society sucked ass while at it. The Good Soldier Svejk to thread in re: Austria-Hungarian Imperial assholes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel that Mexico, the Caribbaean, and Latin America must also return to the rule of the Habsburgs.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear they already have Capel Street in their command...

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

as far as european dynasties went, they were prob. the best of the lot. certainly not as evil & callous as the Romanovs, as maniacal as the Hohenzollerns, or as thick and useless as the Windsors.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

For proper historical perspective, please view the videos under "Sissi" here: http://www.prosieben.de/comedy/bullyparade/videoparade/staffel6/

absolutely classic--and a good band name

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 31 October 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone read the recent Vanity Fair that had photographs of various European royals? I had no idea there were still Hapsburgs and Hohenzollerns!

That chin though. Scary.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 31 October 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, they say the Habsburgs were all Satanists.

Bob Nemtusak (Ann Sterzinger), Friday, 31 October 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Franz Josef had a great line in facial hair, and his influence continues to this day. Only yesterday someone got on the bus with EXACTLY the same facial hair (i live in Vienna BTW so this is not much of a surprise)

But didn't the Habsburgs lose the Netherlands?

("I just had it, it was right there between Germany and France, oops, where did it go?")

kate (kate), Friday, 31 October 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

vienna's pretty cool and I think that that is probably a result of the habsburg empire.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 31 October 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

But didn't the Habsburgs lose the Netherlands?
("I just had it, it was right there between Germany and France, oops, where did it go?")

they lost the United Provinces (proto our Netherlands) in a FITE, and after the Napoleonic Wars they decided they didn't want the Austrian Netherlands anymore.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 31 October 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Even Titian had trouble with that chin:

Alex K (Alex K), Friday, 31 October 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Jimmy Hill a Habsburg???

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 31 October 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The Knights Templar and the Priory of Scion will never give Europe back to the Hapsburgs. Oh, shit, I wasn't supposed to say that...uh...how....did you get in here.....aaarrrggghhhh....

Skottie, Friday, 31 October 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Bourbon Family Spokesman (RickyT), Friday, 31 October 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Skottie, Friday, 31 October 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

A Very Brady Coronation, and you're invited as Tom reunites Austria, Hungary, Spain, the Low (dirty low down) Countries, and Poland (bringing better cuisine with him, no doubt). The Hapsburg family trait is too clear to disupute. Behold the new imperial salute:

I read that vanity fair article, it was FUCKING PRICELESS. The exiled prince of greece going on and on about how the monarchic system was really responsible for a lot of good things, and sure there were a couple of bad eggs, but really the good far outweighs the bad, now really shouldn't we think about the monarchy as an asset, especially when there's so much uncertainty in the world, royalty is just a rock now, isn't it?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 3 November 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmmm. Does he have a different moniker now?

Skottie, Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Sort of.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. Okay.

Skottie, Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it because of the whole chin thing?

Skottie, Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Or, it's just a secret, is it?

Skottie, Monday, 29 March 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That's for the Pizza Christ Honor Guard to know, and the rest of you not to find out.

It will be written that Otto Habsburg lived and died a democrat, but sometimes I wonder. There is a story, perhaps apocryphal, that one morning one of Habsburg's aides in the European Parliament came to him and asked for the afternoon off. Habsburg asked why. The aide confessed somewhat sheepishly that he wanted to watch a soccer game.

Habsburg consented, then inquired. "Who is playing?"

"Austria and Hungary," his staffer replied.

Habsburg is said to have looked up from his desk and asked: "Against whom?"

Either that or one hell of a sense of humor.

One of the persons I invited was the publisher of the Asian Journal at the time, Peter Kann, who would go on to become chairman of Dow Jones & Co. in America. Mr. Kann said he couldn't make it because he had two competing lunches. I shrugged and started to walk off when Mr. Kann looked up from his desk and said, "With whom are you having lunch?"

"Otto von Habsburg."

"What?!" Mr. Kann exclaimed.

"Otto Habsburg," I repeated.

"Do you know who that is?" the publisher asked, rising from behind his desk.

"Yes," I replied. "He's the father of one of Eddie Lachica's girlfriends."

"He's the Holy Roman Emperor!" Mr. Kann exclaimed.
