Is it not time that this big-chinned family be once more made the rulers of Spain, Belgium, Austria and large chunks of central Europe ?

as far as european dynasties went, they were prob. the best of the lot. certainly not as evil & callous as the Romanovs, as maniacal as the Hohenzollerns, or as thick and useless as the Windsors.

Franz Josef had a great line in facial hair, and his influence continues to this day. Only yesterday someone got on the bus with EXACTLY the same facial hair (i live in Vienna BTW so this is not much of a surprise)

they lost the United Provinces (proto our Netherlands) in a FITE, and after the Napoleonic Wars they decided they didn't want the Austrian Netherlands anymore.

I read that vanity fair article, it was FUCKING PRICELESS. The exiled prince of greece going on and on about how the monarchic system was really responsible for a lot of good things, and sure there were a couple of bad eggs, but really the good far outweighs the bad, now really shouldn't we think about the monarchy as an asset, especially when there's so much uncertainty in the world, royalty is just a rock now, isn't it?

There is a story, perhaps apocryphal, that one morning one of Habsburg's aides in the European Parliament came to him and asked for the afternoon off. Habsburg asked why. The aide confessed somewhat sheepishly that he wanted to watch a soccer game.

Habsburg consented, then inquired. "Who is playing?"

"Austria and Hungary," his staffer replied.

Habsburg is said to have looked up from his desk and asked: "Against whom?"
