hard to believe this hasn't come up before.

Jackie Chan, prop-man and slapstick genius, or Bruce Lee, creator of a new branch of martial arts and living legend, until he died. Or did he? Yes.

I have to choose? That's wrong on so many levels....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

After watching Rumble in The Bronx, I want to go to New York and find those Rocky mountians in the background of all those shots. Hell they didn't even bother removing the Canadian Post mailboxes or bank symbols on all the buildings.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

that's why as a Canadian you should take pride in it! I mean, Canada produced a better NYC than NYC itself.

er...

Bruce Lee: Black Sabbath :: Jackie Chan : Van Halen

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll take Bruce Lee all the way home...although, you can have the best of both worlds in Enter the Dragon when professional thug Jackie Chan gets kicked in the nutz by Lee's sister.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Lee would win in a fight, but Chan's got the ker-razeee American sidekicks.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Canada produced a better NYC than NYC itself.
see also, Calgary as Metropolis in the first two Superman films.

Lee is a martial artist, Chan is an acrobat, it's apples and oranges, unless you're asking which is the better Asian, in which case, shame on you.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 October 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It is indeed apples and oranges. And I prefer Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat to either, which I tragically expect makes me indie.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 30 October 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never read Bulletproof Monk, but I really enjoyed CYF in the film, even if the film wasn't so hot. Other than CT,HD I've only seen him dubbed in John Woo flicks, which is no way to judge an actor--which I think explains quite simply the whole French thing for Jerry Lewis.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 October 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

jackie chan's best movies are way more fun than bruce lee's, but bruce was more of an excellent dude.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 30 October 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Bruce Lee's fights from what I've seen are too often anticlimactic because he's so much the better fighter than everyone else, the fights are too short.

Chow Yun Fat doesn't belong here, since he doesn't have a martial arts background. (see: hardcore kung fu fans bemoaning his moves in CTHD)

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 30 October 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

bruce lee : nureyev :: jackie chan : buster keaton

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Thursday, 30 October 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The difference is subtle but important.
Bruce Lee would kick your ass.
Jackie Chan would kick your ass by accident.

Can't wait for Jackie Chan to publish his Martial Arts Manual: The Tao of Joke Kune Do.

i like bruce lee as a presence but he's by far the best thing in his movies which can get tiresome. jackie has of course made some great movies in his time worthy of the buster keaton mantle. i can't really choose, especially since late-period jackie chan has retroactively taken some of the sheen off the young jackie chan.

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 31 October 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Sicne the fights over and Bruce has clearly won lets get on woith the musical metaphors.

I think Cynthia Rexroth's films are pretty good which probably makes me a Peaches fan.

this is it, pretty much.

also, Lee was perhaps one of the greatest cinematic fighters ever, whereas Jackie is a better actor, along with his physical skills.

See Drunken Master II as the pinnacle of Jackie's balance between comedy and fighting ability.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 31 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

who would win (in their respective primes): Mike Tyson or Muhammed Ali?

I don't think anyone would argue with the assertion that Ali is the better fighter, but could Tyson's peak brutishness have vanquished him?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 31 October 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

who wants to play some Tekken?

Lei Wulong vs Marshall Law?

any fighter games than include Drunken styles are fuckin' tops with me.

Well, if Tyson had some kinda Hannibal Lector mask...
