Why are the current wave of postal strikes called Wildcat strikes?

Also why in the share trading world do you have bull/bear markets. I kind of understand what each one is but why bulls/bears?

I assume that people are equating the traits of the animal in question with the traits of the human behavior. In which case why are the postman acting like Wild Cats by striking?

Ask Goldie Hawn.

The term refers to the traders themselves who are either bulls rushing onwards in belief that the markets are rising or bears who are traders who are hibernating out the prolonged slump.
The term extends to the market in terms of which group the market favours. The naming extends to trades, options and instruments.
Side note: The markets also feature 'bulldog' which is sometimes used to refer to London/UK items.

It's a strike that's not actually voted on and endorsed by the union itself, the members just do it. Acting like wildcats, I suppose.

Do Wildcats go on strike a lot then?

Davel, Friday, 31 October 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

uhm my impression was that it was a strike that was against contract, as in the contract was still in effect. i'm pretty sure this is right as i recall answering this correctly in 11th grade quiz bowl!

Who are they contracted to?

Your both probably right. Since a union can not authorize a strike when not in a legal position to strike.

also, a surprise strike (cuz normally a union will give notice of intention to strike)
