Tuomas, send it all to me. In a little box.

Wow Its even better than Milano Centrale or London St Pancras.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 1 November 2003 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Milano Centrale is great! Shame about the city itself...

Milano is great (if you live in Torino)

What a great title for a camp 80s Eurodisco classic!

this is an incredible building! I must see it. I shall add Helsinki to my list of places to visit in 2004.

All time classic building. And it was designed by Eliel Saarinen, father of Eero Saarinen, designer of the TWA terminal at JFK, the St Louis Arch, and many other amazing places. Great family.

I first saw it in the Helsinki sequence of Jim Jarmusch's "Night On Earth", and I knew I had had had to go and see it. Wondeful.

"Wonderful", even.

There is an add campaign for the State Railroads running right now, where those guys holding the lamps decide to leave their posts and travel along the railroad; it's done with computer graphics. Nice stuff.

By the way, that "Night on Earth" episode is indeed classic. It's actually Jarmusch's homage to Aki Kaurismäki, whose regular actors appear in it. I wonder how many people have gotten their first/only glimpse of Helsinki there.

Taking Sides: Helsinki Station vs. Union Station

Tuomas, I am Aki Kaurismaki's biggest living fan. Well, maybe not, but you get the idea...even his silly early stuff! Are many of his films available on DVD in Finland? There was a Japanese box set I missed winning on Ebay...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 November 2003 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably not, he isn't an avid fan of either videos nor modern technology. I think he wants hïs films to be seen at cinema.

I've just been to dinner with the owner of the company I'm here working for. His great uncle, Eliel Saarienen, designed Helsinki station. He shares a first name with a the son of the Eliel, Eero, who is also an architect, who amongst other things designed the St Louis Arch.
