why do mens barbers have those godawful late80s/early90s photos on the wall of guys with haircuts like they're in New Kids on The Block?

and they're will probably be one of a guy with a high top fade too. does anyone actually go into these places and say "i would like to look more like luke perry today, with a dash of jordan knight too" or "yeah i wanna have my hair mc hammer circa 1991"? and yet the pictures have never been removed. why?

they have retro charm

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 1 November 2003 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

They're just waiting for 'the kids' to move from ironic mullets to ironic high-top fades.

bob i'm more boggled by the fact that there is still a 'men's barber shop' somewhere and that you were in one!

Would you prefer Vin Diesel?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 November 2003 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex: i'd prefer johnny depp circa pirates of the carribean. now that i would ask for.
g--ff c-nn-n: i am probably hungover and what you said has sailed way over my head. i feel pretty stupid. anyway, please elaborate.

maybe they are hard to do, or fun!?

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 1 November 2003 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, so what about those black, white, and magenta illustrations of women where they're all wearing the haircut of the mom from Webster -- except the mouth is all lipsticked and pouty. Is there no such thing as 21st-century design??

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 1 November 2003 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

damn I'm so glad other people are talkin' about this shit. I'm always worried that this is what barbers WANT to cut, and will if you don't stop them.

I wish I could find a pic where they actually show the HAIR, but this is the kind of design I'm talking about (from the website for a salon in Tennessee):

bob i am definitely hung over... i thought the 'barber shop' was an extinct creature (though i do know of hair places that call themselves such and have that kind of design) (and i guess i do see old barber shops around but they always seem closed)

haha jay: i'm disappointed our nu-legwarmer era hasn't brought this guy back!

I take them as a sign that you in a decent barbers! The kind of place where a haircut is only a fiver. *Sigh* Long may their out-dated hair-do photos fade.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 1 November 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, fuck, that's exactly what I'm talking about, g--ff.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 1 November 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It's that whole Nagel design, I still see it to this day around here. The man identified an exact style for those places that is timeless!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally pointed to a 80s haircut like that on the wall and asked for it once! It had this big wave of hair justting out from my forehead and totally rocked, but it took so much gel to keep it in place.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 2 November 2003 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

my dad posed for one once!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 2 November 2003 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i've wondered the same thing, and don't have an answer.

but it reminded me that in ann arbor, there was apparently 'the porn barber', who kept issues of playboy and penthouse mixed in with 'top fade monthly'

never saw it for myself, but was confirmed by many guys. is this better or worse decorating than the stylized webster mom (jaymc you are totally OTM about describing it like that)

colette (a2lette), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

BECAUSE THEY CAN.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

don't most barbers have copies of playboy and such?

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

oh shit, where was this?
