is there a sexier, more talented, more charismatic actor around now?

WOOF!

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 2 November 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But we agree that he's not the second coming of Brando that he was initially hyped as?

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 2 November 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

he's great, and I'm happy he's recovered from his brain tumor.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 2 November 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i was going to start a thread about him, too. i've only seen him in You Can Count On Me and XX/XY, but i thought he was fantastic in both. possibly his limitation is that he relies a bit too much on his lost little boy look?

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 2 November 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he's great too, and if not in the sphere of Brando (small, that sphere, but getting bigger all the time-- especially around the middle, ho ho ho) at least in his category-- wounded and poorly-shaven toughies, hard with a liquid centre. This has tremendous potential, as long as the actor manages to stay young. I'm not seeing In The Cut, though. I read the book a couple of years ago and it was astoundingly bad. It's easy to see what interested Jane Campion in it, sort of, and I'm certain the movie has all the bad parts of the book and none of the good ones--or the good ONE: the sodomy scene.
Actually, come to think of it, it wasn't that good.

antexit (antexit), Sunday, 2 November 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

oh boy - i didn't even know about the brain tumor - i had wondered why he'd dissappeared for a while. I haven't seem in the cut either but i intend to asap - seems like it gives him the chance to do something other than his "little boy lost" act, as toby said. Brando was a revolutionary actor, in terms of style, but was he really that Great after the first few years? He doesnt have much scope either, it seems to me.

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 2 November 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

s1utsky you should post this to every thread.

"Brando was a revolutionary actor, in terms of style, but was he really that Great after the first few years? He doesnt have much scope either, it seems to me."

Last tango in paris?

and of course THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Sunday, 2 November 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway im not interested in Brando - this is a thread about the ruffinator!

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 2 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah the brando thing is a red herring

when applied to any tough&sensitive young actor the best policy is to just ignore

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 2 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

his name looks like mark buffalo.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 2 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And that's a good thing! ;-)

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 2 November 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ruffalo was great in you can count on me

he's the only reason i'd even consider seeing in the cut

another newish actor to be excited abt: sam rockwell

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 2 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

he looks to be playing some kind of cliche in the new jane campion film. i hate hate hated "you can count on me". well i actually just disliked it but the minute i heard people calling it "the greatest film ever" i began to hate it.

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i know that's out of character...

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I always get him confused with Billy Crudup.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 2 November 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ams, I was going to praise Ruffalo in You Can Count on Me as one of my favorite performances of the last few years, but I was afraid you'd attack me!

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 2 November 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

we should also mention that dude has a great voice

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 2 November 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i won't attack you, that movie just gives me hives.

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 November 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess i'll see "in the cut" even though i know it'll stink.

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 November 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

am OTM

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

billy cruddup is kind of hammy

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

all of it

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

you can count on me is really very special, i think, and M R is amazing in it. theres a scene on the porch where they (brother and sister) are both smoking pot and he does an amazing bit of acting. if i describe i'll sound like a fool. Anyway, something to do with brushing a moth off of his arm during the scene. I think it's one of the loveliest things i have ever seen in a film.

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"very special" arrrrghhhh

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i'm sure he's a good actor it's just that whole "oh it's all so naturalistic quotidian blah blah blah picture postcard" context

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

x post - all of it!?

that in the cut will suck and you can count on me is bad but not so bad as he, as an afterthought, decided that it was and that he'll go and see in the cut anyway...?

right!

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah sure - im deeply sorry if the words "very special" offended yr sensibilites.

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

no it's just the kind of thing my old boss (for whom it was "the greatest movie ever") would say.... i actually use that phrase sometimes myself.

jeez this town

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, jed, have you ever seen 'all the president's men'? there's a great scene where r redford brushes some ash off of a sofa. it's fantastic!

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever i totally know what you mean about such privileged moments, it's just that i don't have any fond memories of that particular film.

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i havent seen all the presidents men but i'll check it for the sofa/ash moment if nothing else. Also i know what you mean, amateur!st, about that phrase - its the kinda phrase people use when they cant be bothered describing what it is they like about a movie - or they just want to sound mysterious!.. BUT, yeah, the things i like about it are either hard to describe or would just sound idiotic or pretentious if i went through them.

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

overheard in elevator:

"did you see 'life is beautiful'?"

"yeah"

(hushed moment)

"it was... it was..."

"beautiful."

"yeah."

(much nodding)

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

for example, if you think of a movie like In The Mood For Love - which i do like alot - its full of those kind of small moments of loveliness but it makes too much of them. You feel like your being beaten up with epiphanies, but you don't with YCCOM.

Plus i just think MR is a complete shag.

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

jed, I absolutely know the moment you're referencing with the moth. That scene is fantastic.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 3 November 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That is horrible, amateurist. I hate it when people enjoy movies.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 3 November 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

j robards!!!

RJG (RJG), Monday, 3 November 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

robards!! *writes all this down*

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 3 November 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(Jason Robards, Jr. RJG OTM. That movie is filled with great actors. Robert Warden as Donald Segretti is maybe my favorite mini-role of all time.)

Am still OTM.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 3 November 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

He does tremendous likeable stoopidity in XX/XY.

One of these days Toby I'll bump into you in the cinema.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 3 November 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

its more the thought that all the movie could inspire them to is total insipidity, bnw.
