Shaving advice (applies to faces - smut freaks look elsewhere)

Right - having succumbed to Gilette's latest contraption (the Mach 3 Turbo) I have found it is k-rub. I do not have enough manly testosterone to require a shave every day (more like every day and a hlaf, which I expand to 2 days), but the Mach 3 leaves me needing a shave every day (ie, it doesn't shave as close) but because there really isn't enough there the next day, I get horrible razor rash and spot stuff happening on my neck.

So - what's the best razor out there (wet shave, natch)? I still think Sensor Excel is pretty good, but this is where people advise me on shaving. Razors, aftercare, foam / cream oils used etc.

For the record - I don't like oils, as they clog my razor blade up.

Fire away...

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I fucking hate shaving. Use that tea-tree oil shaving gel and a decent moisutiser. Remember to use freezing water on your face after you've finished to close your pores. Grow a beard. I onyl shave twice a week now, though I probably ought to every day if I was respectable.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, I like the Mach 3 best, though the the blades are $$$ (or £££, or €€€). It's closeness of shave has extended my former schedule of every other day to every third--or maybe it's just that I am a lazy sod.

what's wrong with electric, Dave?

If only there was easy simple home electrolysis.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Electrics chafe me so.

Another thing - Mach 3 turbo proves a golden rule - never buy anything that implies speed in the title when the product in question has feck all to do with speed in any form. Also, sub-petrol-head marketing = dud and I am shamed for falling for it.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Electrics chafe me so.

Campest statement on ILE evah.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Electrics chafe me s.o.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

People need to be more candid about chafing and only then can we stamp out this evil.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 2 November 2003 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I find myself enjoying shaving these days, though because I'm a dumbo and get up late I only do it every second day of so. I can get a pretty close shave with a Mach III Turbo, but not as close as with a Sensor Excel. I'm probably gonna stick with the Mach III Turbo as it cuts me less. I use a gel shaving cream (right now it's Gillette Series Clean Skin (w. tea tree oil) and a facial scrub after shaving. People keep telling me I shave all backwards but I don't care - it works for me. I shave before I shower so that if I do have any little cuts they're all fixed up by the time I'm out. I just wet my face, then massage in some of the gel, shave my whole face and neck down cleaning the razor regularly, then reapply gel and up shave, then cross shave various spots, especially my neck. Then I get in the shower and wash my face with an apricot facial scrub and/or something like the Adidas face scrub I have now (Neutrogena's is really good, too, but the Adidas stuff was on sale...). After showering I put on an after shave balm, either some free stuff I get with cologne or something like the Neutrogena Razor Defence stuff I have now. All of this gives me baby bum face.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 2 November 2003 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Sensor Excel >> Mach 3 nonsense. I got a Mach 3 for Christmas a few years back and used it exactly twice. Cut my face to bits both times.

What works for me: wash whole face using facial scrub. Refill sink with insanely hot water. Soak flannel in water. Apply now very hot indeed flannel to bits of face that require shaving for several seconds. Repeat two or three times. Lather face using gel NOT foam. Shave with the grain using Sensor Excel razor. When done, rinse thoroughly with hot water, then cold. Apply Body Shop aftershave gel to shaven bits, and moisturiser to rest of face. Be amazed at how much nicer face feels now itchy chin horror has abated.

Ricardo (RickyT), Sunday, 2 November 2003 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus Christ, people - shaving's this complicated? Or am I just the only non-metrosexual here? Here's my barbaric routine:

1. Lather face (or don't - I sometimes don't have time, and it's really not a big deal one way or the other. Really.)

2. Find something that cuts decently without cutting you. Very slightly used razors work best, I find - good cutting power with almost no incidence of slash and burn.

3. Slice and dice. Clean razor off as necessary between swipes.

4. Go both towards and against grain, fuck it.

5. Continue until finished getting everything you wanted to get. Wipe off all excess lather (if you used any).

6. Apply aftershave/gel (should you wish to).

7. Repeat as much or little as strikes your fancy.

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 2 November 2003 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Get up early and go to the gym.
2. Do cardio exercise like crazy for 30 - 45 minutes.
3. Sit in steam room for 10 - 15 minutes.
4. Shave with shaving cream and cheap disposible safety rasor.
5. Now take a shower to remove that "I'm a doddering old idiot with shaving cream in my ear" danger.
6. Relish an incredibly smooth shave with no bleeding thanks to the moisture of your sweat and the steam.
7. Feel superior to all around you.
8. Kick their collective ass.

Skottie, Sunday, 2 November 2003 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

pretty much i just throw warm water on my face and have at with a straight-razor.

i'm v. low on the growth front tho.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 2 November 2003 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I find that shaving with soap in the shower drastically reduces skin irritations and abrasions. Also, I only ever shave in the same direction as the hair, never against it.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 3 November 2003 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

SHAVE BAD. WOOLLY WANT HAIR ALL OVER.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 3 November 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I shave once or at most twice a week using soap in the shower. I do need to get a new blade, though. I still use the Sensor Excel doodah but I have really enjoyed the Mach 3 when I've borrowed one. So.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 3 November 2003 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i use an electric razor + steaming hot face washer afterwards + moisturiser. my face seems to be permanently rough. i'm considering going back to the blade but i'd always end up with heaps of cuts no matter how careful i was.

Hairy Women

11.05pm - 12am | Nine
(M) Entertainment Premiere

Body hair is a funny thing - we meet women who'll do anything to be rid of it, men who will stop at nothing for a glimpse of it, people who make a living ripping the stuff off in clumps so that other people can stick it back on again in lumps.

Madchen you didn't really finish yr story, I don't think.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all in what you use to lubricate the razor. Nothing beats really good soap, either shaving soap or, what I use, the really excellent Dr Bronner's Liquid castille soap. (You have to persuade someone to bring it back from the states because it's rarely seen and very expensive when you do over here). Any really good soap will do, a good castille soap will lather even in London water. Cover your beard/stubble well. I suppose you could use a shaving bowl and brush but I just work a lather between my hands and rub it on.

I use a Mach 3 rasor and yes it is a close comfortable shave but that's not the best reason to use it. The best reason is is the fact that it's the only disposable razor blade you can effectively wash the soapy hairy crud out of.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean I DO think, not that you'd notice going by that sentence

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna hear about the neck beard.

Mandee (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaving sucks, always. Occasionally I have a decent shave, occasionally I have a crap, painful shave. It's seemingly random. I hate my manly testosterone!!

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't really notice it until you get close up.

Mark, only *occasionally* do you have a crap?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, shaving is a pain in the neck. I use a Mach3 and I find that you can't really shave every day with it - it's not that good at shaving a day's growth, only when you've got a decent couple of day's growth to deal with. I use Clarins' 'Rasage Idéal' foaming gel and their 'Huile de Rasage' shave ease but I've started using King of Shaves' Alphagel which is pretty good. At my last flat there was no shower, so I used to shave after having a bath and half-an-hour of chin soaking certainly makes for a better shave.

Has anyone noticed, since the recent introduction of the Mach 4 and the Wilkinson Sword competition, that getting blades for existing razors is getting difficult? I bet they're deliberately holding the stock back so that people might decide to give a new razor a try.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

also, I've found that in LA, if you don't shave for a few days and wear aviators, people think you're famous!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, shaving is a pain in the neck.

well, i supposed that SOMEONE was going to post this, sooner or later.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Mach3 facts: 1) Gillette apparently spent $1 Billion on developping the razor
2) Mach3 blades are apparently the most shoplifted item in Europe

jadrenos (jadrenos), Thursday, 6 November 2003 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

anyways my shaving ritual is after a shower while the hair is still wet, shaving foam, 3-blade razor, with (or across) the grain - never against it, hot hot water rinse, moisturiser. every second day. seems to avoid most of the rash and ingrown hair type issues.

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

also i love love love watching men shave. i'm not sure why. maybe because it's usually after a shower and they're just wearing a towel and smell all clean and stuff.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

I shave in the shower (while the conditioner is taking effect)

1. Washing face beforehand is a good way to remove dead skin cells and to soften the hairs up.
2. I use two shaving products at the same time - first, Aveda shaving cream from a tube, topped with Aveeno shaving cream from a jar. Let that sit on the face for at least a minute or two to continue the softening process.
3. Shave with Mach 3 standard (as opposed to Turbo). Go with grain, washing after every three strokes or so. Right cheek, right jaw line, left cheek, left jaw line. Neck with the grain - then RE-APPLY Aveeno shaving cream to neck area. Mouth/chin area, followed by neck accross the grain.
4. Rinse in shower, pat dry with towel, apply Aveeda Apres Rasage skin balm, with really nice botanical smells.

All told, 5 minutes, rarely nick or irritate skin, and very close and neat shave - which my wife likes, so that's good.

one year passes...

I just started shaving with a razor (as opposed to an electric) for the first time in, oh, 13 years. And I can't believe there's a thread about this to guide me in my journey.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 9 August 2007 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

I have one of those three-razor Gilette dealys. How do I get the goop and hair out from between the blades before I go up for more? I was banging it against the sink for a while, but it flew off and went down the drain.

Also, should I call a plumber?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:01 (seventeen years ago)

Whiney, you know what I do? I puse my lips on the blades and blow! It works! I have not cut my lips once, so it's perfectly safe to do so, if you are careful.

moley, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:13 (seventeen years ago)

Won't that blow hair and shave goop all over my walls?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 9 August 2007 04:17 (seventeen years ago)

Not if you aim at the sink.

five months pass...

okay, anyone still use aftershave?

i only ask because for years -- at least 10 -- i've used this stuff:

http://www.escentual.com/isroot/Escentual/SiteImages/ProductImages/CalvinKlein/EscapeForMen/aftershave100ml.jpg

can't remember why i started using it, but i did. i liked it; it became my signature scent.

problem is, it's nigh-on impossible to get hold of these days in aftershave form (though not as eau de toilette). i can't be arsed trogging round 10 different shops just to find a bottle, so i figure it's time to find something else.

but what?

and do i need aftershave anyway? hellfire, i've got a fucking beard at the moment. it seems a bit excessive to spend 20 or 30 quid on something just to splash on a bit of my neck. and nobody else seems to use the stuff any more. i always thought it was good for your skin in some way, but i've no idea how or why.

anyway. recommendations etc appreciated.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

pre-beard, I need the aftershave otherwise I'd get too irritated. Even still I use it when I shave my neck, parts of my cheeks, and the back of my neck. I'm a big fan of the Nivea line of products. I've used more expensive stuff and enjoyed them, but this stuff is soothing, smooth and has no scent:

very hot water

With grain, unless i need a very close shave

i don't use a blade - just a peanut and i trim to a #1. what do u guys do to clean up all the hair (assuming you shave infrequently enough that there's a sizable amount). i grab a plastic bag, open it as wide as possible, place it in the sink and trim over it. inevitably lots of little hairs end up all over the place - in the sink, around the sink, etc and i have to spend 10-15 min finding them all to clean them up. surely there must be a better way! i once saw a clipper that advertised a hair collection feature so it left no mess but - get this - it didn't work at all.

i stopped shaving when my first son was born bc it just took too much time and i always hated it anyway. my beard is too thick and dark for me to ever look clean-shaven, even immediately after a close shave I look like I have a 5 o'clock shadow.

now I use 1/8" guard on my hair clippers once every 3-4 weeks. I put some paper towels flat in the sink to catch the whiskers and then to wipe up other loose hairs after.

marcos, Sunday, 22 January 2017 00:13 (eight years ago)

In the shower, with bath gel. The limit for marginal returns is reached with 3 blade heads, and the most important quality of a head is an open, unobstructed back so whiskers can be rinsed out in the spray between strokes. Basic Mach 3 is fine, but drug-store knockoffs are equally good. Used to like these slender two blade heads that could be turned to my advantage in nostrils, but now just play masochist with good tweezers.

what do u guys do to clean up all the hair

I shaved my beard ATW TFO this morning and my new 1 Weird Old Tip for this is to get your beard completely soaking wet first before taking the Peanut to it.
This makes the hair weigh more and clump together so it vastly, vastly decreases the amount and breadth of discrete scattered hairs.

trilby mouth (darraghmac), Sunday, 22 January 2017 15:51 (eight years ago)

Never heard of the peanut before.

I shave my head and beard from monday through thursday, then let it grow out over the weekend.

I use a Dorco Pace 6 with Aveeno moisturing lotion as a shaving cream in the shower. I wish there was a better combo though. There are always patches that I'm just unable to get on the first pass that I'll have to go over again once I've been out of the shower for a while and let the skin on my head calm down.

I trimmed as soon as I got out of the shower this morning, beard still soaking wet - basically got like 8 stray hairs on the edge of the sink, everything else stuck to the trimmer in clumps and went right into the drain. Easy.

SFTGFOP (El Tomboto), Sunday, 19 March 2017 22:25 (eight years ago)

a few days later I had to go back in with the trimmer while it was dry because trimming wet creates pretty uneven results. However, I will say the mess left just evening things out was much less than usual and only a few strays escaped the sink. I think the TOMBOT TANDEM is the way to go from here on out.

five months pass...

I'm killing the beard tomorrow. It was super nice outside today, and while I was walking to the local fancy-stuff grocer and back, I noticed far too many carefully tended facial hair arrangements on the other dudes in my neighborhood, sitting outside at the various dining establishments. Fuck that. I'm done being part of a trend. Back to the once-a-week all-around stubble.

my 6yo, realizing change was in the air, requested extra beard scratching on her head at bedtime. alas.
